Hilton walkways/stairs

Looks nice. I hated that half the light bubs were burnt out, half of the railings were busted, and the concrete was crumbling. Better doing it now than if something bad happened and a subsequent lawsuit.

Speaking of crumbling concrete, I wish they could fix the concrete inside Jack Trice Stadium. A lot of the steps look horrible as do large sections of the wall around the field.

Lettings facilities get a little "ragged" is a good way to get additional funds for them and/or entice donors to open their checkbooks. This could be strategic.

A lot of those elevated walkways never made much sense anyway!

They make sense in this picture:

From what I know, nothing is set in stone but some additional ideas include lowering the now-raised Center Street and eliminating the pedestrian tunnels under the street as well.

The main entrance to CY Stephens auditorium may also be moved from the north side to the southeast corner, where the "secondary" entrance currently is.

They would also no longer allow tailgaters to park on the courtyard in the middle of Stephens/Scheman/Hilton for football games.

Hey, I know an area nearby that's going to need quite a bit of fill... *cough*southendzone*cough*

Speaking of tunnels, they really need to drop a tunnel under university at S16th for football games. Separate the vehicle and pedestrian traffic a bit.

My first thought also- plus the "tunnels" under the road from the parking lot.

For sure! Those tunnels are awesome.

Just thought of something...this doesn't mean that they're changing the main concourse or the entrances, right? Everyone will still need to go up a level to get in; there will just be fewer walkways to get there, right?

They won't do it because it makes sense :jimlad:

I think moving the main entrance to the southeast corner of CY Stephens would be a mistake. Not near the space as there is on the north side.
TILC and Y in CY Stephens spell Cy...I never made the connection because I say C followed by saying Y.I spent 4 weeks in that building for various all state music functions and never realized....carry on!
They dropped the "C Y" years ago. It's simply "Stephens" auditorium now. Unless they added it back and I missed it.

Glad to see that this stuff is getting taken care of it was very needed. The elevated walkways were to a point that they were detracting from the awesomeness that is Hilton and of course the building of the century.

I was hoping that the brick entrance thing on University (close to Reiman Gardens) would have been stairs or a tunnel to get to the other side of the street. If something would be done there, it would help foot traffic a lot.
I noticed at last years game at Mizzou, they had one for their stadium.

This would be pretty cool and allow traffic to run much more smoothly during game days, although I have to think they might have problems with groundwater seeping in during wet years as this area is pretty low and can be quite wet, I guess they could raise the road maybe and have tunnels (but that would likely be very costly).

Oh just fix the walkways. They are sweet. They are part of what links the Iowa State Center making it feel like an attached complex of buildings and taking them down will detract from the original architectural vision.

1 vote against the proposed plan

I too always liked the walkways but after 40 years they are really showing their age.
Looking at the drawings removing those walkways does seem to open the area up a bit.

I agree with you. The raised walkways are one of the things I most remember from the first time I was in Ames in Jr High. But that whole area really needs SOMETHING done :skeptical:

Michigan State did something like that with railroad lines that go on the south side of campus. Wish they'd have done something like that south of Jack Trice for pedestrians, as well as spruce up the railroad overpass on Stange Road by Frederiksen Ct.
