You mean that stout 09 D that was ranked 99th in total defense? That year was pretty amazing in that they gave up so many yards but managed to give up so little points per game. I don't know how they did it.
Yeah, i liked how that 09 defense played...I sat through all of 08. Maybe you remember that year? Missed tackle, and 65 yard TD. Missed tackle and 43 yard gain. wash, rinse, repeat.
In 09 ISU had a good punter, made offenses work ALL DRIVE LONG, and allowed only 22 PPG in 09. And when you FORCE teams to run more plays, the likelihood that they will F-up increases. There were very few "Chizik yards" given up by missed tackles in 09. It was scrappy guys and effort, and eventually the turnover would come.
That's the bottom line with the 09 defense, and that Unit only had a couple decent pieces(Frere and Lyle) and 1 standout player (Smith). LJ was just starting to show potential, but when Kennard Banks is is opposite of him, what can he do?
The 2009 D lowered OSU from 69 points to 35 that year.
Mizzou from 52 to 34. ATM from 52 to 34 er whatever. KSU from 38 to 28. CU from 28 to 10. That defense held 3 conference opponents to 10 points or less. And you got a problem with that squad because they gave up too many damn yards? Considering they had a bunch of merely "warm bodies" out there on the field, I'd say that was pretty damn good effort all year long?
09's defense gave the Clones a fighting chance each week. This defense will probably win a big game or two by themselves.
ISU has done very well getting turnovers the last 2 years. Its practically beyond a fluke by now, with 25 games to look at. Its the effort and system...and now there's far superior talent out there on the field. Look out folks. If the turnover ratio stays in the ballpark of where its been the last 2 years, there are going to be some happy Cyclone fans this year.
