I used to listen to the Hawk but there was a 2 day stretch when I heard the same song like 45 times. So went to KJJY and they mix it up well and their morning show is better.
Except for a few artists, new country music has really turned me off of country. Used to be a huge fan but cannot take it anymore. Best place to get good country on the raidio is from local smaller town stations.
This X1000, except sometime on Outlaw Country Mojo Nixon annoys the crap out of me.
Everyone should do themselves a favor and get out of the midwest and head to some music festivals in Colorado, Okahoma, Texas, etc.(I highly recommend the Steamboat Music Fest,The MusicFest at Steamboat, Colorado) Living in Denver for awhile was great as it seemed like every weekend a band from the red dirt scene was playing within an hour of me. I go to Oklahoma 2-3 times a year and try to catch some bands while there every time.
These bands will play every college town in the big XII except Ames and Lincoln. For whatever reason us here in Iowa are stuck with craptastic country music from the Nashville music factory. I wish these bands would make it up to Iowa so people could see what they are missing. As Al said these songs have much more artistic value to them where the lyrics make you think about the true meaning of the song instead of a song talking about liking a bar or driving a girl in a tractor, or talking about how "country" you are etc.
I always find it funny when the same people who rip on the likes of Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Kesha, etc. as being nothing more than hack pop stars who sing what other write for them list their favorite country stars as people like Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, etc. These guys are nothing more than someone who can play the part and put on a tight plaid shirt with boot cut jeans and their fake big belt buckle with a "dirty" cowboy hat and look "country" while singing someone else's cheesy cliche songs that someone in Nashville wrote for them. They are the same as the top 20 pop singers who people rip on all the time.

I agree with Al on Outlaw Country. It is pretty much all I listen to in my car, other than 1460 KXNO of course (shameless plug).
Other than the Cyclones and auto racing, there really isn't anything that I'm more passionate than country music.
I'm not a fan of the new-age pop type stuff. I respect it and think that there is a place for it. It just isn't my cup of tea.

4 - Dierks Bentley
5 - Miranda Lambert
I love me some honky tonk. My favorite young guys are Chris Young, Luke Bryan, Justin Moore, Josh Thompson & Blake Shelton. I listen to and like many more, but this pretty much sums it up.
My least favorites include:
- Sugarland, Rascal Flatts (I love their old stuff), Little Big Town, etc. That type of crap.
AND YES, I love me some Taylor Swift but NO, I don't really consider her a true country artist.

I like (or can at least tolerate) all kinds of country music. I like a lot of the new stuff as well as a bunch of stuff from the 90's and 00's.

Who cares who writes the stuff. All that really matters is how it sound on the radio or live.
How do you figure ZB isnt country, about as country as it gets for new stuff. They all play several instruments including fiddle and banjo during concerts ect.
So just because some of us don't like the top 20 country music that the major labels are shoving down our throats and suggest some other bands that people may not know about and may like we are snobs?
I would compare this to McDonalds vs. a locally owned original restaurant.
Sure McDonalds is popular, cheap, familiar, and it is everywhere but it doesn't mean it is the best does it. And if someone prefers a local restaurant to McDonald's are they a snob as well.
Oh and I always find it funny that if someone doesn't list Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Miller/Busch/Bud light, BWW, Hooters, Applebees, and Outback Steakhouse as their favorite some on here will always show up in those threads and call them snobs. Hurry up and get your spot at the status quo trough.

If you like it more power to ya, I just tend to like musicians who write their own music. That's just me though.
I think people that sing their own stuff tend to make it sound a little more authentic or from the heart of whatever you'd like to call it, but a great song is a great song. For example, Kris Kristofferson didn't do the most famous verstion of Me & Bobby McGee, but I've heard so many different people's version of it and love nearly all of them. The problem with comtemporary music isn't who is writing it but why it is being written (i.e. largest possible audience for airplay and album sales).
Pop music has been written to appeal to a mass audience to maximize airplay since the radio was invented. Sorry to burst your bubble.
I would hardly call myself a country fan, but one thing I do like about it is that there are a lot of guys with very deep voices. My parents like Josh Turner and kinda turned me on to him, dude sings low.
Yeah, I've never gotten this. Ragweed has played in Ames in the past and drew a good reception. I know Todd Snider used to play People's back in the late 90's. I think a lot of it is that there are too many folks who are unwilling to look past the standard radio country. Then you have rock fans that are afraid to check this stuff out because they can't get past southern accents.
The other part of the problem is after People's left, there isn't really a viable smaller venue in Ames. Headliner's focuses more on local bands, and for CY Stephens or Hilton, you need to be fairly big time. If Headliners started booking these bands, I think they'd do fairly well.
I like a mix of both. I mostly listen to XM radio so I usually switch between channels 16, 11, and 17. 92.5 KJJY probably does the best of mixing the older stuff with today's current stuff.
Yup. It's like its some sort of sin to not enjoy crap. If you don't love mass produced generic stuff, you're clearly an arrogant snob who thinks they're better than everyone else.
It's not these folks think they're better than others, it's just that they enjoy different things, and enjoy looking a little harder for higher quality in things be they music, food, alcohol, whatever it is. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that.
I have very good friends who have, IMO, awful taste in music. Guess what? I don't think I'm any better than them, I just don't like the music they listen to. Not rocket science.

Red dirt! As someone who never listened to country music prior to moving to Texas, I enjoy these two bands quite a bit and also Cross Canadian. Got to see JB on New Year's Eve at the Firehouse down here. He puts on a good show, that's for sure, and the venues I've seen him at are always a bit smaller where you can get right up to them and just about shake their hand from the floor. Good stuff! :yes:
It would be a lot easier to avoid the snob label if you wouldn't post stuff like this.
Again, it's just my opinion on something. Are there things you don't like? Do you think you're better than the people who do like them? I doubt it.
Everyone is engaged in some form of snobbery. I see the same people that love pop music, chain fast food, and Bud Light bash things, but they aren't accused of snobbery for doing it because a lot of people like what they like and agree with them. If you like something that isn't popular, you're automatically labeled a snob. Someone who likes popular things can bash obscure things and not be considered a snob, but it's a double standard the other way.
CF rule: If you like something that a lot of other posters like, you can bash at whatever you want, no problemo. If you like something obscure, keep it to yourself you no good snob! You can't disagree with people who like different things!
