So what do you think we have?

Are we inconsistent or have we merely won games against bad teams? Texas Tech isn't a great team, and they really struggled against us but almost pulled out a victory. UNI didn't have trouble moving the ball against us, but they can't hold onto the ball against anyone. Iowa was never a game. Utah was never a game. Northern Illinois is actually looking pretty good, but they played their 2nd string qb against us. KSU was a back and forth game, although it seemed they could move the ball on the ground at will through most of it. Then they go and look like a junior defense against Nebraska.

I can't tell what the heck we are right now. I know we've got at least three really tough games left with Nebraska, OU, and Texas. Missouri doesn't exactly seem like they've taken the step back like I thought they might. KU is terrible. Colorado isn't great, but I never like playing out there. Tell me we're making strides right now because I've got this feeling in my stomach that we might take 2 or 3 more beatings like tonight and possibly only two more wins this year.

What do we have?

No defense and an inconsistent offense with no room for error.

We won't be able to meaningfully compete with elite programs until our speed issues are resolved.

The differential in terms of speed was brutal.

We've played two very good teams in Iowa and Utah.

Iowa could've easily done what Utah did to us tonight, but chose not to. They also could've held us scoreless had they chosen to.

So, we've played two good teams and basically been beat 200-20 or so, should they wanted to score as much as they could've and if they decided to leave their first or even 2nd string defense on the field.

We are who they thought we were.

What do we have?

A C- Football team.
You have to hope they can win 3 games out of KU, CU and Mizzou. (I could see us winning 1-3 of those since Mizzou is pretty good and CU is on the road.
No way this team beats OU, Texas or Nebraska. i will give them a 25% chance against Tex.

So we are looking at a 4-5 win football team.

NEXT Year...

Non conf losses to Iowa and Uconn
We go 3-5 wins again.

The next few weeks you'll realize that we're also under powered. We're also pretty short.

The defense gives me more hope that they can grow into their roles than the offense. They at least showed some fight for a while.

The offense just has nothing. I have trouble seeing a bright spot, unless we count that they didn't spike themselves.

Gonna have to disagree BIG time with you on this one. Utah had 2 punts, and 2 turnovers, or they scored every other possession. The defense was god awful, and couldn't stop the girl scouts from running all over them.

The defense has zero depth at the moment. The drop-off from the 1st to 2nd string is huge. When the 1st string gets gassed there is no one to fill in. Hence, the gradually worsening defense. This is exacerbated by an anemic offense which doesn't let the 1st team defense catch a breather. Offensively, we need a lot.

If we beat Nebraska, it makes my season.

I just don't see us having a winning record this year

Notice the word "some." I'm not exactly singing their praises. Plenty of fail to go around. But they at least looked like they wanted it a little bit at first.

Utah is a good team but not that good of a team. Tonight was a embarrassment.

Precisely.

Let's suppose Utah is better than almost everyone on the remaining schedule (except maybe OU & NU). If this program is supposedly primed for resurgence (even in a "transition year"), it shouldn't lose at home by 48 (giving up 68) unless the opponent is a bonafide BCS title contender.

We only lost by 41

True. Ferentz always eases off the gas in games like this, and doesn't like to show anyone up. They probably could've put up 50+ on us if they wanted, but unlike the Utes, Ferentz has class.

I'm sure this is just postgame fatigue, but this scares the crap out of me. We lose our best defender in Simms next year, two contributing DL, and #2*#3 safeties. On top of that, we lose six offensive starters (7 if KO makes the mistake of trying to go early) including Robinson. Oh God...

well they have had #2 and #4 teams to finish the season in recent memory, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't be considered contenders.

We obviously should have been able to hang closer, but a lot of our fans were too hung up on the non-BCS conference thing going into this game.

I did not expect Utah to be significantly better or worse than Iowa. As others have pointed out Iowa could also have beat us by 48 if they had chosen. We have two more chances against top ten teams to show we can hang. So far we're good or competitive against good, average and bad teams... and we get throttled by top teams.

It sucks that we lose players, but we need new blood to get us going. How well have any of the people we're losing really done for us. ARob hasn't been playing that great this year.
