Was that supposed to be a fake punt - or a botched play? Kind of missed the play and saw VDK running down the sideline. Huge play.

Call in show said it was a called fake punt.

Call in show at first wasn't convinced it was a called fake punt. Looked like VDK knew the punt was going to be blocked and saw a lot of daylight to his left.

that's what i thought too... it looked like he was planning on kicking it

It looked like a really well executed fake. The O-line let the Tech special teams run right past & Mahoney waited the perfect amount of time before taking off with the ball. Kinda like Top Gun.

Tech's entire punt team peeled off the first return attempt so I wouldn't be shocked if that was called.

I'm with you guys that thought it was a real kick "turned fake" because of the pressure. Last i saw a called fake punt, VDK took off at the same time his front 3 took off with him. Well, they were fighting off blockers and never pulled away to protect him.

I thought it was a real punt play? The same thing happened with Nebraska. If the punter sees them crashing hard to one side, it leaves the sideline open to run. I love CPR, but I don't think anyone is ballsy enough to call a planned fake at that point in the game, against that team, on that part of the field. He probably just told Kirby to keep an eye on it and if he had the chance to, tuck it and run.

You are correct, Sir. The entire right side of the field was WIDE open on the first punt. I was a little nervous when I saw him take off on the second one because they had the block on, but the booth did their job on that call. At least I would assume that call came down from someone with a bird's-eye view.

When they interviewed CPR at the end of the game, he alluded that the play was a called play, but seemed to not know that it was coming.

My guess is that Herman called it from above.
