Does Boise State Deserve Title Shot?

For me it depends on how Va Tech and Oregon St do in the rest of their games. If they both win the respective conferences, Boise St deserves a shot. If neither wins more than 9 games, no they don't deserve a shot.

I don't think they should get a shot at the NC, even if they run the table. They do not play BCS caliber teams week in and out. They open the season with 1 or 2 and thats it. The rest of the season is against bad opponents. Boise St. could get a lot worse this year, yet still win out.
If they can't get into a BCS conference, go independent, and play 8 or so BCS teams/year.

They play in an easy conference. There's no easy way of getting around that. But if theyre serious about a national championship, how about scheduling all 4 of your non conference against BCS teams? And stop whining when no one will schedule you when you demand a huge paycheck to come.

So what if they play in the WAC? As I said, they have earned the right to play for the title over the course of several years, by beating numerous BCS teams on the road and at nutural sites. Its not like we would be just giving a shot to a randam WAC team that ran thru the conference. Boise has earned this.

And as far as scheduling, are you expecting Boise to travel TO all these BCS schools and NOT recieve a big paycheck, when those same schools refuse to come play in Boise? Why in the world would they do that?

This is exactly right...except....

I found it odd that you used Big 10 and SEC, but didn't use Big 12 and Pac 10. Does that mean you only think Texas and Oklahoma are the only ones who will ever represent the Big 12, and that USC are the only ones who will ever represent the Pac 10?
Yes. That is what I think.

Agreed.

What gets me about the yearly arguement on Boise St is that everyone dismisses their schedules. Yet most of the top teams could have about the same thing said of them - that they only have to get up for a couple games - even in conference. And many of those teams play patsies non-con. I'm sure some will say that even the weak conference opponents for BCS conferences are stronger than what BSU plays - and you have a point. But they are still only typically challenged a handful of times.

And a better arguement - every year this is brought up and will keep them from getting a shot. So they get a bid to another BCS game - and win.

Boise is an excellent program and could play with any team in the country, but until you actually play a schedule like Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Iowa, Texas, etc. you won't have my vote (not that I have any say.

Texas? Texas and Boise are in similar positions. Boise's schedule basically has tough games against VT, OS, and a couple WAC opponents that will give them a tough game. So you're looking at 4-5 legit hurdles for Boise(who we know can play with anyone in the nation!).

Texas will have tough games with OU, NU, TTU and maybe OSU. 4 legit hurdles+ possible CCG. Texas has the firepower to blow out ISU, KSU, Baylor, maybe OSU...very similar to what Boise will do to some of its WAC opponents. When you look at it that way, the parallels are very similar to some of the BCS teams poised to make a title run.

The preseason rankings are a beauty contest, and Boise beating BCS schools left and right has them aboard the top rankings. They've built up their program to a the point its so far superior to the rest pf the WAC, but in doing so they've proved they can beat virtually any BCS program.

Let them in if they go 12-0!

Yes. That is what I think.

:biglaugh:Just had to yank your chain a bit. I wasn't serious.

Sounds like you are, though!

I might agree with you on Texas, but Oklahoma....I don't know.

And USC under Kiffen? I think the Trojans are on a downhill slide under that guy.

Ok, so followup question for everyone? How many teams right now would beat Boise on a neutral field?

I think after week 1 the field has been significantly narrowed. I mean, Boise St beating Virginia Tech in a virtual home game for VaTech is impressive. And the way Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma played against their opponents in week 1, if they came out and played like that against Boise St they'd get rung up.

I think there has to be a distinction between "would" and "could". I think just about any team in the top 25 COULD beat Boise St on a neutral field. But then again, over the last 5 years Boise St has proven time and again they WILL beat anyone in front of them on a neutral field.

I'd have to say right now the only two teams that WOULD beat Boise St on a neutral field would be Ohio St and Alabama (with a complete roster). At this point in time I'd have to put Florida, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, and everyone else in the COULD category.

Do I think they deserve a shot? Yes, but because they have a great team and great players. Watch the game and you can see that. Give them say, Wisconsin's schedule and they could very well run the table just as well.

Agreed.

I don't think this gets mentioned nearly enough. Let's take Ohio St, for example. Their "tough schedule" is Miami, Wisconsin, Penn St, and Iowa. Okay, that's two more difficult opponents than Boise St plays all year, but is someone really going to argue that Marshall, Ohio, E Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Michigan is all that much more difficult than Boise St's schedule?

Boise State deserves a shot at the National Championship so long as there isn't another undefeated BCS team. No one loss team should jump them.

Well, they won't be for the next two years, and likely not as long as Kiffin is coach

It is ridiculous to say that Boise should not have a shot at a title if they go undefeated. If you are saying that, then why do you even have football teams outside of the BCS conferences. This is an accumulation of 5 years of great football. They have worked their way up the rankings by beating the likes of Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, and now Virginia Tech - all teams that were top 10 caliber teams.

It's not about this years schedule difficulty - because their 1 year diffuculty will never satisfy. It's about an accumlative effort over the years. And this is assuming they can go undefeated the rest of the year with an enourmous target on their back - one like they haven't had before.

Boise is certainly a better team than people give them credit for. They have talent and they have heart. They also have an excellent record. I would never say that they don't deserve a shot at the title at all. However, I don't think they should be ahead of undefeated teams from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10, unless the other's also end up with weak SOS.

Could Boise run the table with Iowa's 2010 schedule? Could they do it with Iowa's 2009 schedule, while playing so many tough games on the road? Could they do it with ISU's 2010 schedule with back to back games against Texas and Oklahoma? What about with Alabama's schedule in the SEC? Can they survive week after week of punishing games?

It's the first week. Boise had all off-season to prep for the VT game, and even considering how poorly both teams played at times, they eked out a more-or-less last second win. It wasn't some huge show of force either. Hell, if VT didn't insist on throwing deep bombs, with a minute to go and 2 timeouts, they might have had a chance to actually win.

At the end of the year, if AQ teams have gone undefeated, or even 1 loss through a tough schedule, then they should go ahead of undefeated Boise.

I think the difference between the bad teams in a BCS conference and the bad teams in the WAC is pretty substantial.

BUT the good teams in the WAC are pretty much equal to the bad teams in the BCS. So they schedule two very good BCS teams, what makes their schedule any different from a team that loads up with cupcakes up front, plays some bad BCS teams in conference and only one or two quality teams?
