Standing for the Whole Game

I like the enthusiasm of those who want to stand for the whole game. I certainly wouldn't trade it for people who sit and don't care. However, those who like to stand seem to think that it is the only way to show support for the team. And there are really key expressions of support that are being lost, such as the impact that comes when the entire stadium stands up at a key point. You lose this when everyone is already standing.

And, my feet hurt bad!

However, I would much rather stand in pain with a crowd who cares than sit comfortably with a crowd that doesn't.

Unfortunately, there's too many that wouldn't.

Whatever happened to just going to games and cheering like crazy cuz you love football and you love Iowa State, I won't ever tell someone they need to stand for the whole game and I'll never tell someone to sit the whole game. Too much whining on here about stuff like this. I love that all the students stand the entire time. I understand older fans or people with physical reasons can't. You just gotta feel the group of people you're around. I'm for sitting during offense UNTIL a good play like first down or a big play, it's fun to watch replays of everyone standing up at once on a long run or pass. On defense, the more noise the better on each down. But I would like to see everyone who is able standing and yelling on 3rd downs.

I have knees that I've beaten into the ground over the years, and on their own, standing wouldn't be their thing.
About every 2-3 months, I invest in another set of Dr. Scholl's inserts for my shoes, and I'm good to go all the time, standing on concrete for the game, standing on concrete at work, or whatever.

Honestly, that might be a really good answer for you.

im guessing its where you sit... i had no issues in 15 years... if people are sitting around me i sit, if they are standing i stand... its really pretty easy... you didnt happen to be on the grass with italian loafers on did you?

What started as a great student effort to support their team has gone too far. However, it now seems that people all over the stadium are yelling and cheering loudly through the whole game. And they look at folks who don't as if we aren't supporting the team.

Well, my head hurts when I am exposed to loud noises for long periods of time. Further, I actually like it when something like a key third down makes people yell and cheer. It was our football sense of how to act as a crowd in these situations to help our team that previously distinguished us as a well-educated fanbase.

Maybe we should sell "noisy" tickets and "noise cancelling headphones."

Man, do I sound old, but my head hurts!

Sorry, but I personally do not feel obligated to curb my enthusiasm because you want to stay sitting.

Real fan support and passion can affect the game. It is VERY obvious when the fans are sitting on their hands and not supporting the team.

Both enthusiasm and apathy are contagious. Which one do you want spreading throughout the fan base?

This is also part of the problem I have with Sweet Caroline being played at the crucial point between 3rd and 4th Q. That is the point, especially in close games, that you want the most energy, not the most warm fuzzy feelings.

I know some fans love it and I like the student section involvement, but make it a tradition to play it after wins. Also, it looks completely stupid when it is played when we are losing.

The same goes for Hey Baby. I am a former band member so I have a soft spot for the song, but not the timing. Again, play it after wins.

The main point, if you want to sit, that is fine, but do not harrass other for standing. I have had friends physically manhandled for standing and cheering their hardest. Ridiculous.

OK man, OK man. Then why does our PA announcer yell "Cyclone fans, on your feet" and stuff?

as i said.. for big plays, feel free to stand. im not a 'sit the whole game' guy. but i am a 'dont ruin the whole game for someone who cant see past you' guy.

I think this is a good compromise outside of the student section. Just be courteous to those around you. Try not to force someone to sit if they want to stand and vice versa.

we have seats in the stadium. seats are for sitting. its incredibly selfish to ruin someone's game, when your ability to see the game is not affected by sitting down. you can be just as loud sitting down if you want.
i see your point of view, you don't see mine. maybe it would ruin that guys experience to have to sit down. maybe he has more of an enjoyment of the game by standing and cheering that way. i'm not condoning either way-as i said-i prefer to stand but understand it may not be liked by those around me. it's selfish of me yes, and i don't care. i wasn't put on this earth to please complete strangers every second of my life. i was put here to make my life as enjoyable as i can while i'm living it.

do what makes you happy and stop worrying so damn much about what everyone else is doing.

Unbelievable to me that you actually had to take the time to explain to this to someone.

Many times I'm one of the first to stand in my row/area. Usually people follow. But guess what? If they dont, I sit down.

Why? Because the game experience isn't about ME.

You wrote, "Thanks for letting us stand that want to support our team and be the 12th man. For a well-educated fan base, also understands the concept of 12th man!"

If you think the best or only way to be a 12th man is to stand for the whole game, then you don't have a very sophisticated understanding of the 12th man. I have seen the home field advantage be increased very significantly by the strategic use of standing, yelling, sitting, etc. in various ways. I think the 12th man factor may actually be lessened by the constant noise and standing. Some of you may feel like they are being more supportive, but it may not actually be the case.

And this says nothing about doing the wave and stirring up the crowd at times when it actually interferes with our team like last night.

The bottom line, though, is that I wouldn't trade a standing, supportive crowd for a sitting, non-caring crowd. Let's just not mistake standing and noise for maximum 12th man impact. And let's keep our target in view: winning games.

Standing during defense and making noise and sitting during offense seems like a nice idea for the common folk.
That being said, it is scientifically proven that you can produce more volume in your voice standing, than sitting. It opens up your thoracic cavity, creating more air in your lungs, thus creating more volume. This is why we need to stand and get loud on defense.

bottom line, both people paid the price of admission to attend the game. once in, they can do almost anything they want-with a few obvious legal exceptions. i prefer standing and wish that everyone else did as well but i'm not going to expect it just as i would hope you wouldn't expect me to sit down.

well said.

and what about those who will not see any of the game if they're behind you even if they stand? The person who has to sit for part of the game still can see the game, which is what everyone paid for. Go join the students if you want to stand the whole game.

nope. how about i just continue to stand in my section. again-i care about me, myself, and i. and if you don't feel the same way about your life-that's your problem not mine. there's a saying that i love, and i'll quote it below. read it, take it to heart.

Man—every man—is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself.

I'm not siding with anyone here but I'm sure there are those people that can't see even when the person in front of them is sitting. A particularly tall person in front of a kid for instance. Is that person supposed to move?
