Every one is agonizing over the possible loss of Sims, Austin Alburtis...What about Michael Brandtner(sp)? In 2010, there is not a bigger pair of shoes to be filled than his. His reliable leg moved the ball 44 yds automatically. Often, he boomed eyepoppers that completely reversed field position. Who the heck is going to step up to replace Michael? This is a really BIG question mark for the 2010 Cyclones.

If Vander Kamp (Kemp?) punts as a freshman, the special teams could be in big trouble.

He basically HAS to. Nobody else really.

Rhoads has already stated that he's expecting him to be the guy.

I coached Kirby in his early HS days with punting techniques. He's a great kid with a strong leg who is also very coachable. I don't think he can fill in directly for brandtner, but has a shot to be better than Mike in a couple years. As long as he doesn't fumble snaps or shank one in a bad position he will be just fine.

I think your remembering him a little too fondly, I certainly remember some struggles this past season. Oklahoma state especially springs to mind. He was a quality punter no doubt but by no means irreplaceable.

Brandtner punted all four years of his collegiate career, so it certainly isn't unprecedented.
Offering a guy a scholarship to punt at a D1 school before he ever punted in a high school varsity game is unprecedented. He's going to struggle in the wind tunnel that is JTS.

what about zac guyer? i thought he might switch to punter from kicker... seems like kind of a waste if he doesn't becasue he'll never beat out mahoney

But he's got the tools, and that's what matters. Punting in a gametime situation isn't like learning another position - as long as his release is quick he'll be just fine.

Really? The best punter in ISU history and you make him seem mediocre? The kid had a few struggles but overall, he was the most consistent punter ISU has had and had one of the biggest legs in ISU history. You're one of those glass is half empty kinda guys arent you?

Daniel Kuehl will punt.

No.

I think Kuehl or Guyer will get the nod before Vander Kamp

No they wont.

Kirby will be the punter. He has been doing real well in workouts thus far. He wont step in and be what Mike was last season, but he will certainly get the job done.

You're joking right? Mike is probably going to the best known as the best punter we've had at ISU... Glad one game ruins four years for you.

I'll wait for the season to get closer. My money is still on Kuehl or Guyer to be the punter over Kirby. Sorry I'm not willing to throw my money and confidence on a kid whos barely been punting...

Has ISU ever had truly solid special teams specialists (PK/P/KR/PR) in the same season?

There have been good players at those positions, but it would be fun to have a lot of those players at their peak and playing simultaneously for a couple of seasons.

Special teams: Underrated.
