Billy Gillispie

Would you get behind the hire if there were clauses in the contract that addressed his alcohol issues?

The only thing such clauses could address would be any potential buyouts if he has to be fired. That's only part of the problem. What about the negative effect on the team if he has to take a leave of absence and go into rehab, or has to be fired? No contract clause can fix that problem.

I'd just like some assurance that he really has his alcohol issue under control.

A&M was a football school with no tradition of basketball success until Gillispie arrived.

I went to an ISU / A&M game on Super Bowl Sunday several years ago (it was the SB the Ravens won against the Giants) and there were probably more people working (counting the teams) in Reed Arena than attending the game...and I am not exaggerating.

Why do we think Billy would be able to recruit up here? When he was at A&M he recruited only Texas, basically.

When has anyone up here recruited Iowa well enough to do anything? GMAC seems to forget that he is recruiting to the BIG XII and not MoValley. Having guys like Brian Peterson on scholarship might fly at the mid major level but it doesn't at the BIG XII level.

3 more Iowa Juco kids GMAC is currently trying to bring in for next year = MORE FAIL

Please let me repeat - rehab, even a successful one, will do NOTHING for the worst problems he had at UK.

I don't know if I buy your take on him. In the past you seem to have it out for coaches that rub you the wrong way personality wise. The ESPN article makes it sound like he might have his **** together, it's worth looking at.

What?

He can still recruit Texas and bring those kids up to some place that appreciates basketball and has a passion for it instead of some place where basketball is only to fill a little dead time between the end of the CFB season and national signing day for CFB.

In Texas at all these schools...CFB is #1...and it's not even close. And #2 at most of these schools is baseball.

What raised my antennae was your statement that "Gillispie is fresh out of rehab and there is no indication that he has his alcohol problems under control."
That is a bold statement. How do you know that?

It is a verifiable fact that he has recently finished his rehab program and is still consulting a counselor.

In my experience with those suffering from alcoholism, the best indicator of having the problem under control is sustained periods of sobriety. Sadly, people can fall back at any time, and work pressure is a big trigger. That's why in a previous post, I said I'd like to see him take a non-coaching but still basketball related job (i.e. color commentator) for awhile to help him see how he can handle the stresses. If he still has a problem, the collateral damage would probably not be as great as if he was coaching some where.

I don't know which specific problems you have in mind, but successful rehab could possibly help the other problems if alcoholism was the root cause behind those other problems.

I still say, if he's dead set on coming back to coaching, this is not that stressful of an environment for DI college basketball. It's a good gig with reasonable, and recently lowered, expectations and an AD that has been proven to be patient.

Being 6-12 (0-6) going into the game at a school that hadn't had a winning season in 7 years and hadn't made the NCAA tournament in 14 years will probably do that. We appear to be on our way down that path. Official attendance at that game was 3,765. By the way, in Gillispie's third year when Iowa State played there, they had 11,148 as official attendance.

Don't tell this to the LE haters. According to them Larry was a scumbag with or without the booze.

I also agree he isn't calm during games. It's more of a cross between a kid that just peed his pants and is desperately trying to hide it and a death row inmate that knows his days are numbered.

Posts like this are the reason I should never read while talking on the phone to someone. Good stuff.
