Why is Lucca Staiger an almost complete bust?

Guys hold on, don’t crown him king of the 3 just yet. He is a streaky shooter if you all do remember. Hell even in this game he took some questionable 3's. We all need to wait till later in the year before we go crazy. Great game, yes but this happened last year only to struggle for a good part of the season. I'd like to say though, this is a completely different team than last year and because of that hopefully the shots are going to be open. Keep up the good work Lucca!

I will point out that a lot can change in a year, and Staiger has definitely changed a lot. He has gotten rid of the "baby fat", and loots slimmer and more muscular.

When I posted this a year ago, he was somewhat of a 'bust' at the time. He was hot-and-cold from beyond the 3-point arc, and was usually very cold on the road. It was painful watching road games in which he would make miss after miss after miss from 3-point land, which would usually result in a rebound and a lay-in by the other team. He was also ineffective on the defensive side. So when he wasn't hitting the 3's, he had an overall negative affect on the team.

It is very much worth noting that this record of 10 three-point shots made is from a road game.

I wasn't being fair, bringing up a thread from a year ago and my hat is off to you because it took courage to do so.

I wanted to make the point that noone expects Lucca to make ten three pointers every night, but that everyone has on and off performances.
When you called him an almost complete bust last year, it really hit a nerve with me. Everyone of our athletes are on the battlefield doing the best that they can.
Sometimes it is a productive endeavor and sometimes it isn't, but they are always........ doing the best that they can.

I would like to see all of us try to be more tactful, when we choose to be critical.
That's all.

Lucca made 74 three pointers last year, 1st on the Team, 2nd on the Team at 39% from three point land. All this while playing on a bad knee, with less of a supporting cast, some ISU fans may want to cut this young man some slack. He had many opportunities to stay and play in Europe and make some nice cash, but he choose to remain a Cyclone....

A very good night by this young man. He beat Dedric Whilliby's record and he's the best 3 point shooter I ever saw as ISU.

I still feel that Christopherson will be starting over Lucca once league play starts. Three teams now have purposely targeted Lucca on when they are on offense and Young and Simons scored very easily with Lucca on them. We won't be able to afford that in league play. SC is just so much more versitle and brings alot more to the table to keep him on the bench.

This is why I think that it's rediculous to declare a first year player a bust. Being a "bust" implies that they'll never live up to expectations. That's assuming a lot for someone playing their first year of college basketball. He also had to adjust to a new style compared to Europe. Look how long it was before Hubalek was effective.

This is absolutely precious and has really become quite predictable on this site. Here is the course of events that I see typically transpiring with respect to our players on this site:

1) A player commits to ISU and then he and his abilities are built up to epic proportions...usually with very little knowledge of the player's actual abilities (maybe some word of mouth or a few YouTube clips). I believe I actually remember someone calling Lucca a smaller version of Dirk Nowitzki on this site.

2) The player starts his career at ISU and is unable to immediately live up to the hype. In relative short order, those that hyped the player begin the excuse making machine for why he is not performing as expected...needs more time in the weight room, doesn't understand the system yet, has some nagging injury, yada, yada, yada.

3) After a prolonged period where the unrealistic expectations have not been lived up to yet, someone gets brave and says this kid is a bust...even if he is having an OK season (because the hype build up after a kid commits is usually significantly more than really should be expected). Hence this thread from last January about Lucca being a "bust" even though he led our team in three point shots made last year, I believe. Or go read the more recent thread in FB about LJ and Sed...I don't think the word "bust" was used but a similar discussion was started as the one that began this thread.

4) The player finally has a great game...and make no mistake...10 threes in CBB is a great game. We get the old "bust thread" hauled out and everyone is supposed to eat crow that dared to doubt how good the player was. We are told that this is the kid we recruited...he now understands the system, he has gotten into the weight room and lost the baby fat, etc.

And here we are. Lucca had a great game last night but those of you that expected 10 threes per game when he was recruited and expect more of the same now that he has done it once are going to be very disappointed.

I was there on 12/19/87 when Lafester dropped 54 on the hawks and we all were in love with Lafester. The big difference back then is that the kid had never been labeled a bust prior to that game and we sure were not going to expect that he would score 50 plus multiple times. We just enjoyed the 54 and the big win.

That is what I am going to do...enjoy Lucca's great game and the win and feel good that it looks like the "natural order" of CBB in the state of Iowa is possibly coming back...for those of you that are youngsters that means ISU being the best team in the state.

Exactly. First-year players aren't busts. They're just first-year players.
