Bubu

Not everyone has to be a star. Bubu will play his role in practice by defensively making DG, DB and CC live's hell, and will make them better players. Not everyone needs to pour in the points and have their name announced before a game to be a solid contributor...be it on the floor of Hilton or the floor of the practice facility.

I will add to the arguement here that i've heard there is a decent chance he'll be put on scholership next year.

I think you took what people said (even I) to the extreme. I said and still say that he will never be a guy in which we rely on for big minutes. He will get PT in blow out games and nothing more.

And that is how it should be. He is a walk on. It is great to have quality walk ons

Didn't he just turn 17 a month or so back? Lets take a look at him when he's the traditional freshmen age and reassess. I thought he had some jets on him and GMac was sky high about him last night.
 
If you have to put "not to be a jerk" in front of a post - you shouldn't make the post. You don't want to be a jerk yet you are saying a kid will probably never contribute any meaningful playing time to the team after he has played in one exhibition game his freshman year in college when he is already younger than the other freshmen. You say this because he is a walk-on.

Coach won't play someone just because they have been here for a while and were a walkon at one time. If he is playing quality minutes as an upperclassman that would mean he has worked hard and bettered himself to a point where he is earning those minutes. Why go out of your way to discourage people from being impressed by him and thinking he *may* be able to get quality minutes in the future? If Bubu puts as much effort into getting better as you are into making sure people don't have hope for him he will be a starter next year.
 
I thought that Bubu and Dorr both displayed a level of energy and confidence we don't always see with walkons. Many walkons come on the floor so excited that they are not effective and they look lost. These guys did not look that way and I think they will be great guys to have on the team.

This. I too love the value of walk ons (I was one at a smaller school). But if your walk ons are either starting or playing significant minutes(in multiple games) then either....

1. They are that good and NEED to be on scholarship.

or

2. You have a serious depth problem on your team.
 
Well lets hope it's number 1 then. Just to be clear to all the doubters, I'm not saying he WILL be a great player. I'm saying i think he has a better shot than almost everyone thought he would. I could be wrong here but wasnt he MVP of the capitol city league after DG couldn't get it done?
 
I saw Bubu play twice last year and was extremely impressed. In fact, after a game I thought to myself, I can't believe he is not getting D-I looks. I think he was starting to get some looks when McD locked him up as a walk-on. If anything, I think we should give McD credit for his bargain hunting skills. I think you may be surprised at how good he turns out to be.

I was saying that I was not trying to a jerk to YOU. I wasn't trying to just flat out come and tell you that you are dead wrong.

I follow national recruiting very close. Not just Iowa State recruiting. BCS level schools do not rely on or play walk ons. That is all I am saying. And if we have to rely on walk ons that means that

A) we had a lot of players transfer
B) we have a lot of injuries
C) that walk on grew to be a really good player

A & B happen 100X more than C happens. And when that happens then your team isn't going to be worth a crap (see the last 2 years)

***SINCE SOME GUYS CAN'T REALLY READ AND HAVE TO GET DEFENSIVE ABOUT EVERY POST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY RIGHT HERE THAT I LOVE OUR WALK ONS AND LOVE BUBU PALO!! BY SAYING THAT WE NEED TO NOT EXPECT HIM TO BE A STAR IS IN NO WAY SAYING WE SHOULD DISREGARD, IGNORE OR NOT APPRECIATE HIM***

I've heard McD say previously that his walk-on program is designed to redshirt them since they usually are not physically ready and they would be better as 5th year seniors as opposed to true freshman. We redshirted Cam Lee for example and I doubt anybody had any designs on him playing anything more than mop up minutes.

That said I think Bubu is better than Lee and if he improves enough to make an impact on the floor good for him. I won't expect it and nobody else should either though.

Also, if he is on scholarship next year it likely means somebody else left the team, because from what others have said they plan on filling all of the scholarships.
 
A walk on hopes to earn a scholarship by their play but are gauranteed nothing Hornacek was not a walk on. He was transfering from an Ivy league school and had been given a scholarship by J.O. for the following year. Hornacek decided not to wait for the end of the school year to transfer so he paid his own way for the second semester.

Disagree. Call it a gut feeling, but I see this kid contributing down the road. He's naturally quick and heady, just needs size and perhaps a couple years to develop the rest of his skillset.

I've watched him for a couple years now and am as convinced as ever that he's got potential for us down the road...

GMac had nothing but great things to say about Bubu after the game last night. He did talk about the possibility of redshirting him and Dorr this year so they could work on developing their bodies; however, he stated how hard Bubu worked in practice and what a great job he did pressing the other players. Everybody on the team has a role and Bubu's role on this one even if he redshirts is extremely valuable. Go Bubu and Go Cyclones!

Some people have watched him for several years now. I would have had the same opinion of him regardless of what I saw last night.
