Who's job is it to bench a player at any position? The player or HC?

Certainly tough to bench a future HOF but if that's what needed to be done and the HC felt another guy gave 'em a better chance to win, then he has to do it.

I'd contend that no other QB on that roster gave them a better chance to win than a dinged up Favre.

Mangino didn't do them any favors with his playcalling, either.

They averaged only 20 rushing attempts per game over those last 5 games compared with 35 pass attempts. This is with a top 10 ranked rushing attack. There were a lot of factors that contributed to the Jets' collapse last year, but you can't deny that Favre was a huge part of it.

and we'll never know for sure, because they didn't even give the backups a chance to do it.

If it was Alex Smith, Saun King, or Trent Dilfer (who has as many super bowl championships as Favre) throwing a bit over a 2-1 pick-to-TD ratio, they would have tried out Corky from Life Goes On, just in case. But since it was Favre, no way can you bench the dude.

Well first, it is the West Coast offense. Short passes are kind of the idea.

Second, yes he did. Had a nice completion to Shiancoe in the first half that was longer than 8 yards.

You see, when the QB thinks he's read the defense, or is a future HoF who thinks he has to personally win every game on the strength of his arm, or thinks that checking from a run to a pass gives him a better chance of staying ahead of Peyton Manning in the record books, he changes the play at the line. Then, if he's a really special kind of quarterback, he can turn that called HB dive into a pick-six for the other team.

Favre audibled a lot last year.

Just watched it on NFL.com. He was flushed out of the pocket, and threw the ball 10 plus yards through the air, and Shiancoe ran for approximately 9 more yards for a 19 yard gain.

at least 15 times a game? I guess it's possible. However, that's still a reflection on the coach as well as Favre.

When you are playing catchup you are going to have to throw the ball alot more...

and perhaps the management of the team that just spent millions to bring this future HoF in to the organization. And the management that informed the coaches that they'd be giving him his own locker room, and that he was exempt from a great deal of the team activities, and likely informed the coaches that he wasn't to be benched unless he agreed to it. As a coach, it's hard to have any authority over a future HoFer who's got management informing you that you can't bench them for audibling to secure his legacy.

Which is my point. I don't dispute Favre's play was not nearly as good as he started the season. But there were more than just the one factor for the Jets collapse late in the season.

In only 1 of the final 5 games were the Jets down by more than 1 score entering the 4th quarter. That was the Bronco game, which coincidentally saw them have one of their better rushing performances of the last 5 weeks.

Or just continue feeding AP/Taylor and watch them run for 75 yards in one play. Favre has NEVER had a rushing duo like this. He's played with some great backs, but not a fantastic duo that I can recall.

The key will be if Favre can change himself a bit to allow the system to work.

I don't know, the year they won the superbowl, Dorsey Levins and Edgar Bennett were pretty much as good as you got when it came to rushing duos.
