The Odyssey trailer 2 (full trailer)

I'm ok with a smidge of retelling as translation from ancient texts can be tedious for sure, but overall I just was hoping for a different epic feel. I think generally the long standing interpretation was a good one with very good themes that stand the test of time. Could still be very surprised, but Ill try to temper my expectations a bit.

I dont know if I can handle another Argos moment though. :(
You mean like this?

I would normally agree. However, these are the same group of actors that get mad when someone plays a cuban person who isn't Cuban. John Leguizamo made a huge deal out of it. So in one sense I don't give a rip who plays who, on the other guys like him need to shut their yapper if they can be in movies where a certain race plays someone who isn't that race. He threw a fit about James Franco plaing Fidel Castro. At the same time the whole thing is really stupid. If Franco is a good actor and can play Castro, Go for it.
This outrage is nothing new. I remember a huge dustup when Welsh actor Jonathon Pryce was cast as The Engineer in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon in 1990/91. "How could they cast a European as this Asian?!" Everyone seemed to ignore that The Engineer was a half-French/half-Vietnamese character who was desperately trying to get out of Vietnam for the West. Pryce had also debuted the role in the original London production in the late '80s.

But surely, from a sheer volume of opportunities perspective, you can understand how minority actors being denied roles is more sympathetic than white actors being denied roles

It don't matter though. Don't make that argument if you are going to do the same thing. If you want to say minority actors are not getting a chance, then make that argument.

That is the argument though. John is saying that there aren't many Cuban roles, it should go to a Cuban. That isn't the case for white roles and actors. Is your issue that it isn't spelled out for you explicitly? You'd have to be willfully ignorant to interpret it any other way

No it's just that if we are going Cuban roles have to go to Cubans, Gay roles have to go to someone gay, White roles should go to white people. If he wants more Cuban roles then I am totally down with that. Give them more opportunity. You can just say that only minorities have to play minorities. It's for everyone. Make more roles for Cubans. I am down for that. Then you had Peter Dinklage (SP?) saying the Dwarf roles should not be available and cost a bunch of little people 7 acting jobs in Snow White. BTW the little people community is severely mad about that.

He's an angry elf.

Ya'll ************* need to go and see American Fiction.

Pretty much skewers everybody on either side of this debate.

If you want to watch something that does a great job skewering Hollywood and how it handles identity politics watch The Studio. The episode where they debate if it's racist to have Ice Cube voice the Kool-Aid man is hilarious.

Andy Reid is the only person I think of when I think of the Kool-Aid man.

Again, there is a fundamentally different dynamic between Cuban roles in Hollywood and white roles in Hollywood. This is undeniable. Why do you keep equating the two? "Won't someone think of the whites" is an awfully cringe hill to die on

No it’s not. Either we have the rules and everyone follows them or we don’t. Sick of this race stuff. If Cubans have to play Cuban roles and such. It’s every race has to play whatever race the role is for or we can have different races play whatever role the director wants them to play
