Fan Boundaries with Student Athletes

My rule is simply never tag a player in a social media post. If I run into an athlete in person great, but no other communication to a college athlete.

I agree with you. Leave them alone. The guys who are so vehemently against you in this thread must be the creepers you're talking about.

I once approached Mike Williams, he of the Williams and Wingender WW Express fame at a golf course in rural nowhere Iowa, the last place you'd expect to see an Iowa State football player. How I recognized him in a pre-internet era, where the only possible way to see what he looked like was in a blurry newspaper photo, I'll never know.

I asked him what he was doing in the middle of bumfuk Iowa (the closest town was probably 10 miles away or farther). He was there for some kind of promotion, not sure what after all these years.

But I would argue this is a different scenario than what you painted above. This is a single, muscular guy, standing, not sitting, all by himself in a golf clubhouse looking around like he was looking for someone.
So if they are standing, it’s ok but sitting is a no no in your book?

The OP is probably right. Let me explain...

We were in town so we managed to go to the spring game or scrimmage or whatever they called it this year. We watched #47 play RB for several plays but weren't sure who it was since there was no #47 RB on the roster they handed out. We noticed that there was a woman sitting not to far from us who was very vocal when #47 had a carry so we surmised it was #47's mother. After the event this woman was interacting with quite a few players from Texas as well as #47 at the wall by the bench. As we were leaving she was right behind us so I asked her who #47 was and she said it was Jayden Jackson and she was his mother. I said thank you and moved on.

Not more than a week later we learned that he was no longer on the team.

Obviously I overstepped my bounds and his mother asked him to leave Iowa State because Iowa State fans (me) can't mind their own business.

Sorry, guys...

My wife and I went to an Ames restaurant after a WBB game this season. One of our high-profile players was there eating with a group of I am assuming were friends and family. I left her alone except when she walked by our table. I told her it was a great couple games and I really enjoyed watching the team. She smiled said thank you, and we both went about our way.

On a different occasion, can't remember if it was '23 or '24 I was eating by myself at a fast food restaurant after the screaming kids game in November. One of our starters came in by herself and ate. I did not say anything to her.

I hope I did not break any protocol on interacting with the wbb team in public.

1. I once stopped by where Craig Brackins was sitting and eating with a friend at a WBB game (the chairs/table next to the camera location on the concourse.) They/MBB had won their game a day or two before, and I'd noticed he looked like he was having fun during that day. Back during the McD era, there wasn't a lot of smiling as I recall and I wanted CB to know that it was fun to watch. He was slightly surprised, and very gracious.

Over Nebraska, probably?

Too soon? :D

You did. You probably should have immediately left the restaurant as soon as the lone WBB player came in so as to not be labeled a creeper...

So when did you talk to Kiss?

Ice cold take but old people are the clear problem, first they ruined the internet, and now they're weirdo creepers hitting on college girls alone in bars.

The proper protocol here is to smile and nod, then wait until you leave and post on social media about the great time you had seeing X player at the bar and let everyone know how awesome your life is. #blessed

Why do you think as much? Maybe they like the food or just want a drink to themselves?
I agree that they should 100% be entitled to go somewhere and not be bothered. However, if you're a player on a D1 team and going to an area where you're bound to be recognized, you have to know that you're drastically increasing your chances of being bothered by going to a social environment like a bar.

My BIL is the superintendent of a local school district. He is worlds away from having the same notoriety of a D1 athlete, yet he is extremely concious of where he goes, knowing that he could be recognized and approached.

Being famous means being widely known and recognized by many people. I would love the money, but I would loathe everything else about it.

Been in Ames a long time and have seen many athletes and coaches. For the most part people just leave them alone aside from a few “good luck” or “hey coach”.
I go about whatever shopping I’m doing and don’t say anything as I would feel weird about it. I think the only time I’ve ever said anything was once I said hello to Tamin Lipsey when he was collecting donations at Sam’s. But we made eye contact and it would have been awkward not to say anything.

Don't forget sneaking a pic of the player for the post too!

Right but I'm not making the point we must leave them alone. My point is it's not that big of a deal.

That's kind of what bars are for though.
That’s more of a generational statement than reality in 2026. Most want to go to bars to socialize with the people they are with, not randoms mainly due to the multiple people on here who have mentioned how few can read social cues and are insanely socially awkward. All of which is usually made much worse by drinking
