Audi Crooks to Transfer

Interesting article in The Oklahoman this morning, with numerous quotes from Jacie Hoyt which will not please CBF’s loyal band of supporters. Hoyt debunks the $1.4M payment and says Audi wants to be coached and developed. I was unable to save an archived version to get past the paywall, so I’ll let someone more technically adept retrieve the article. Per this article, it wasn’t money as much as coaching…

Well if we are going to get specific on numbers we had 9 leave. 3 for sure went for a payday. 3 at least left for Playing Time, moved down a level in schools. I know Kenzie went to where they offered her Masters program. Iowa State does not offer the 1 year program she needed, she had a no contact because of that as she visited Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois St which offered her program. So that is 7 of the transfers with reasons other than CBF to move. Beaty and Williams who knows.
That's a pretty loose definition of "playing time" when nearly every starter left. There's plenty of PT available, but they still didn't come back.
If Bill had more funds to invest there would have been less turnover, but still too much. Like all coaches, he has his limitations, though he's been adequate or better at Iowa State as his career winds down.

The bigger issue is worth noting: we're seeing multiple schools lose players in mass transfers--something that wasn't common before. This could indicate the impact of NIL nurturing "freedom." However, I'd argue it's not just about money. We're also witnessing a shift in culture: athletes now embrace the transfer portal mindset more readily, even over minor slights, real or perceived as agents wax the skis.
This is a big part of it though. The simple ease of transferring now enables all of this mobility. That itself is fine and good thing to have, but it's the real enabler of all the movement even more than NIL itself is. It really just is simple to put your name out there and have someone reach out with an opportunity, with minimal to no real cost or risk in doing so (so long as the players' expectations are realistic).

Didn’t Jada and Brown sign for more than the total amount CBF had allocated for his team?

The number I saw was that those two each got about $800K. Williams and Hare also got huge increases from Indiana (along with a top level Grad Program). Add in that there appears to be a lot of momentum for the five years of eligibility and you can at least double what they are likely to take in.

Saying all 3 left for money is incredibly lazy. Audi absolutely did and I don't blame her a bit but if the program wasn't a total grease fire I think both Jada and Brown stay. Brown was out the door before she even got hurt and it wasn't because of money.

Because she hated Bill? Has to be the reason. She’s vacationing with Audi.

Her whole team left too....she had 1 player left. We will see how coached up she is at Okie St.

The Cowgirls went out and bought a team. Similar to what TCU has done the last two years.

She was "last to leave" but everyone knew she planned on entering the portal.

There were 5 in our conference that lost 5+ and 6 that lost 4

We had a bunch of development players that would have had a golden opportunity next year and they all left. I'll let you do the math on that one.

There is much to be desired with our WBB program. Cyclone Women's Basketball used to win the conference tournament. We once tied for the season championship. The team once won 28 games in a season over the last five years. Over the past four years, we've won 66% of our games while playing some top programs, but also many easier opponents. I believe we need new coaching leadership, and few here would disagree.

When player turnover started with Lexie Donarski's departure, I was furious—and I still get heated about it. But what can you do? I continue to support my school while internally questioning decisions and moving forward, however imperfectly.

We're at a turning point as our coaching environment shifts and college sports becomes increasingly focused on money. We're also at the mercy of player satisfaction. Until Bill leaves, we do ourselves no favors by publicly criticizing the program—it only damages morale and accomplishes nothing.

I'm done complaining. I'm making the best of our situation and won't deny others the right to highlight the real problems we face. Still, I'm choosing to move forward constructively rather than dwelling on what's gone wrong.

Lastly, I will be enjoy watching OSU's experiment which could be special, or middling.

I was saying that the whole Okie St team left, did they hate there coach too? Or is that just for Bill....
I don't think that's the example you want to use. Presumably, OKST kicked everyone out and bought better players. Is that what Bill is doing?

And She wants to be known as a master recruiter and coach - no way is she (or TCU) going to admit that they just bought a team.
Well, if NIL world means we can expect 6-9 kids to leave to get paid every year, then I'd say "buying a team" is the equivalent of recruiting now for CBB. Coaching notwithstanding, of course.

And time will tell if this type of fielding a team works. As a coach I would not try this route as you have to hope you get the right mix so that you do not get hurt feelings between players and you lose and then next year many are back to the portal.

This is annoying. First off if Audi was so into "Wanting to be coached", she would have lost a bunch of weight, got herself into shape and put herself in a position to play defense with effort. She gave no effort everytime I saw her play defense. Anyone that "Wants to be coached" would put themselves into a position that wants to be coached. I mean we have trainers and diet programs at Iowa State that she could have used to prepare for each season, She didn't. I am not a Bill fan. Thought he did a fantastic job turning the program around but it's clear his time has come and gone. However, Audi and we all knew it, was not preparing the way a major D1 athlete prepares for a season.

TBF, that just sounds like coach speak from Hoyt. I take nothing from that quote.

What’s Hoyt supposed to say? “Crooks didn’t come to OSU because I was such a great coach. She simply cashed in. If she wanted great coaching she would have signed with Maryland for less money. And it wasn’t $1.4, it was actually $1.3M.”

IMO Audi’s conditioning worsened as the season progressed. Some have said she was having a knee issue. So she rode bike. No doubt she expended great effort on offense as the second leading scorer in the nation. And saved her energy on defense. Too bad. She could have been First Team All American instead of just Second Team All American.

You can't complain about coaching when it is apparent you aren't doing your part with conditioning. Come on. And if she was injured, well, gee, I wonder why? Each pound puts 4 more pounds of stress on the body during activity.

Take the money, fine, but be honest about it. And FTR, CBF can retire now too.

It is an insult to ISU wrestlers, swimmers, and other athletes that you can't even pretend to care about being in decent shape.
