Raising Speed Limits Cost Lives

Unless you’re visiting your dying mother in the hospital why would anybody be driving in whiteout conditions?

You know what I’m really bad at? Riding a horse. The Asian steppe nomad people would be ashamed of me. But that’s no reason not to adapt a much better technology which would save a lot of lives and stress in 99.9% of driving situations.
I know a guy who drove 20 miles in a whiteout condition to get a free hamburger during a farm implement customer appreciation dinner. And he admitted it to me and was proud of himself.

My experience living in a state with higher speed limits that isn’t really the case.

Commuting in CO where it was 75 it seemed that almost everybody was 75-80. Some for the road conditions reasons and some due to how it is enforced. In SD where it’s 80 you don’t see people driving too much faster.

In Iowa I pretty much set my cruise at 79 and have never been pulled over on the interstate.

I really think in Iowa on two lane highways there needs to at least tighter enforcement during planting and harvest season. Most people are pretty aware of farm traffic but there are plenty driving way too fast on highways where you might go over a hill and have a combine or tractor. I would even be ok with increases in speed limits outside of those times, but we need to be really cautious during heavy farm traffic periods.
Imo 80-85 is where the you subconsciously say "this is fast enough". I dont think you'd see a whole lost of people going above that even if speed was unlimited.

I did so to go watch D3 playoff football this winter and it was fun as hell driving in it.

I just love the title of this thread…. it might as well be “Water is Wet”.

Guess what…. if the speed limit on all roads was 20, we’d have no deaths probably…. should we just do that??

Does anyone else have the pleasure of driving on I-380(aka Americas most congested highway nobody talks about)? Nothing better than the LA like traffic from IC to CR at rush hour. Worst ******* road in the state.

I've known people that think Duff Ave in Ames is really bad and this is what that sounds like you're doing.

Raise them. If we die we die. I'd like to see 85 as the limit in rural areas for the interstate.
I don't care if you kill yourself, I just don't want you to kill the other people on the road. And I know you would never, never be distracted for even 1/2 a second or hit a deer at 85 mph.

Me driving 80-85 on the interstate in rural Iowa is no more dangerous than the idiots who drive slow. There is no excuse to have a 70mph speed limit. And BTW I have hit a deer going 85mph. Yes it ****** my car up. But then again it would have a 70mph also. Thats why I have insurance. If you dont like to drive fast there are 2 lane highways that go to the same place the interstates lead to. Take them. If im going from DM to KC there is no reason I shouldn't be able to drive 80 mph from Cumming to Liberty. If anything we need to have "slow poke" laws. And make them punitive. 500$ for being the d-bag driving slow in the fast lane. Gtfo of everyone's way. Ill tailgate anyone doing that, including "student drivers".

This is what a deer does at 70 mph to a F150.
