Donovan Davis announced on May 6th that he committed to the Cyclones!!!

He invited President Geoffroy to the announcement and many other University leaders. Everyone took that as a great sign. Barnes was clearly very naive thinking that all these people would rejoice for him to be going to UNC.
I get what you are saying...but he was a kid who everyone really liked even beyond basketball! Again...he was a kid! Where were the adults that should have given him better advice? That said...he should have done it at his high school like he did...no issues with that at all!

You keep referring to him as a kid and he was but lets be smart here. He didnt plan that party by himself. There were adults that planned this and they could have toned much of it down and still had a UNC announcement party.

I don't really remember it all...did the McDermott kid announce the same day? Did any other Ames kids announce at the event?

Someone should find the Harrison Barnes thread so we can all relive the good ole' days. At the time, I remember it was the longest thread in CF history. The amount of butt-hurt after the announcement was also maybe the greatest I've ever seen on this forum. Full ass adults leaving work early cause they were too upset and couldn't handle their ****.

Wasn't there a game that night also? Hysterical meltdown.

I was pretty sure he was going to Iowa State but was also prepared to take the standard Iowa State nut shot. So I dodge the nut shot and was better off that day for it.

It was the Gary Thompson invite to his announcement that convinced everyone at the last minute he was going to choose ISU. Before that I don't think anyone felt very confident about it. I don't think there was any intent to dunk on ISU fans on his part, but the whole announcement was pretty naive and tone deaf by him and whoever was advising him on it.

Looking back, it should have been obvious he was going elsewhere. McDermott was on his way out and was telling his own son not to commit to Iowa State. Meanwhile, Ole' Roy was coming off a national championship at UNC.

Kinda interesting how it played out though cause North Carolina got hit the following year with the cheating scandal which put that program in decline. Then Fred came back to Ames and got things rolling again. Almost wonder if Barns would have had a better career if he had committed to the good guys.

Hard to argue about whether his career went well...or could have been better! :p I get what you are saying though...I wish he had stayed home!

Where was he supposed to hold it? He lived in Ames.
If course he'd hold it at his high school. But why make an enormous spectacle out of it and fill the entire gym with thousands of Cyclone fans so you can crush them with your decision to go to another school?

Nothing wrong with having a presser at his school to announce his decision, and nothing wrong with choosing UNC, but maybe not make such an enormous event when you know that your decision with greatly disappoint almost everyone there.

He was I'm pretty sure the #1 recruit in the nation at the time, it's a bummer that some grown ass dudes got in their feels about it, but he was a big deal in high school. Maybe he'd do it differently in hindsight, but at the time he was a superstar so a big production didn't seem out of place.

I think his mom busted her ass for him his whole life and his dad was basically 100% absent.

Came here to see updates about Davis only to find discussions about Barnes. To get this back somewhat on track, I'm excited for Davis to announce tomorrow night. And the 2027 class has the potential to be the best high school class in ISU history with Davis, Harrington, and if we can land Baboucarr. All three are currently in the top 65 nationally. Let's go!!!

I think moreso his basketball coach and the Ames AD should've told him "if you're not going to Iowa State, I think you should keep this thing small, even if you want to still broadcast it"
I get that as well...although..."enjoy your moment less because others will be let down by you living out your dream?" I am not saying you are saying this...but it could come off that way? That might have turned him against the Ames community! It was an odd spot...hope one day again we have a #1 recruit in Ames and get the chance to win that one!

If someone switches their crystal ball tomorrow and gets it right, would they be 1/1 on that one or 1/2?

Kinda wondering if 122/122 is more of an indicator that the particular person is more devoted to their job and is able to make last second swaps when things become clearer. Maybe some guy who's 50/60 just takes his shot and sticks with it. Maybe goes to their kids sporting events or eats dinner with his family.
I think over half these guys changed it the same day of Vaughn's announcement. They had Iowa State for a long time until Matt Abdelmassih tweeted something that day negatively of ISU's chances. Credit to the Minnesota guy for sticking to his prediction. 1778008009603.png

Potential addition of Davis and TJ's new contract really really could snowball into an even brighter future at ISU.

I recall also Sports Illustrated (I think it was) named HB its preseason POY before he even stepped on campus or suited up his freshman year in Chapel Hill. I think he ended up being honorable mention all ACC that year.
