Donovan Davis announced on May 6th that he committed to the Cyclones!!!

Been awhile since I’ve paid much attention to the 247 crystal ball stuff, but it’s always been my understanding they can change their prediction at the last minute. Not sure exactly when they are “locked in”, but they probably aren’t right now, yet. A perfect prediction history is likely due to some last minute switching when necessary.

I mean, none of them are really high confidence predictions yet. Busse is the highest, and he has the lowest prediction percentage out of the ones out there so far. I personally trust people with less than perfect records more at this stage. At least they seem to stick to their convictions.

I'm trying to determine how much credence to give to guys who have great crystal ball percentages, but only because they know how to follow others and/or make last second "predictions" that are obvious to everyone.

I was there as well. I walked out asking myself why would he make such a huge production out of his announcement, hold it in ISU's backyard with hundreds of Cyclone fans in attendance, and then disappoint everyone there?
And you know I was never that big of a fan of Barnes after that.

Harrison has been extremely generous to Ames over the years since being in the NBA.
Tons of money, time, and signed memorabilia from him.

Could he have handled his announcement better, sure? But he's been a spectacular role model especially considering his dad is a well known former Cyclone who was by all accounts absent his whole life.
This is what made Barnes' announcement decision even more baffling and stupid to me.

Some guys just fit the "villain" archetype and want to ruffle feathers and they're motivated/feed off people being upset at them.

That is NOT who Harrison Barnes is. He's a likeable guy and doesn't fit the type of guy to just throw up a middle finger to his community. That announcement 1000000% didn't need to happen like that. He could've done it in a closed place or just online.

Letting in a bunch of Cyclone fans in your backyard that you grew up around and lead them on that you might commit to the hometown school and then choose a blueblood program several states away? It was tone deaf and out of character.

I guess I'm a "get off my lawn" kind of guy. I don't understand why any kid makes a big, public invited, announcement of which college they choose to play a sport for.

But I'll be happy to read that he has chosen ISU!

I’ll honestly be shocked if he chooses either Wisconsin or Marquette. I think it’s really 3 schools. Iowa State, Iowa and Nebraska. To @LLCoolCY point, TJ has fostered that relationship a lot longer than the other two. Might mean good news, but we’ll see.

I do think people are underestimating McCollum. If he remains successful post Stirtz, he’s going to be a major thorn in our side, I’m afraid.

I don't think they recruit the same type of player. Anyone with sense is going to make an effort to sign a player like Davis, but I think it's a stretch to suggest Otz is going to continually be in recruiting battles with McCollum. That was the case with Campbell and Ferentz because Campbell wanted his teams to play almost the exact same style of football, and therefore needed the same types of players

It's like having all your friends and family gathered when you propose and she says, "no." Just awkward and disappointing.

I'm guessing, that in retrospect, he probably realizes it was not an ideal way to do it.
Maybe, but that doesn't really answer the question. He did at his high school like I think nearly everyone does.

I don't remember him leading anyone on. I mean, fans will do what fans do and get their hopes up, but can't blame a kid for rumors and hope. These guys have their announcements in their hometown regardless, and I see no reason to do it differently just because they're picking a school from somewhere else.

IIRC, Harrison Barnes hadn't made his decision until right before the event. It still had the possibility of being a joyous moment for Ames . . . until it didn't.

It's was kind of like you like a girl and she invites you to the bar, then you show up and she has her friends there also, Then ten minutes later a guy comes walking in and she asks what you think of her new guy. It was like well, I thought I might be the new guy but now I am in the friend zone again.

Context also matters.
TJ's first sweet 16 - team was an 11 seed and massively overachieved. Huge success to get there.
TJ's 2nd sweet 16 - could be argued the biggest letdown due to the situation. No big injuries, lost by 3 to Illinois though you could also argue that team as a whole overachieved due to the offensive limitations
This year - losing Jefferson puts an * next to this one to me. Beating Kentucky without him was good, and I think we beat Tennessee with him.
In 5 years the college basketball world has forgot the context. If they knew it when it happened?

Nah, he was already about building his brand. That’s a big reason why he went to UNC. And why he held a public spectacle on committing

Several crystal balls now in for the Clones. Woo hoo.

I really hope he does pick us AND can come in and play early and well for us. His profiled is not that different from Xzavion and he didn’t exactly light it up as a frosh - injury or no.
A top 40 guy is much different than a top 150 guy. Mitchell was 143. That ranking usually indicates a potential starter, but not likely to make an impact until year 2 or 3. Davis is ranked 41. That's more in line with Momcilovic and Batemon. We should expect Davis to be an early contributor although it's more difficult for big men. I'd expect him to see minutes in his freshman season, but not necessarily start. He is a much higher caliber recruit than Mitchell.

Just got a fourth CB for the good guys from a Badger writer that is 122/122.

If someone switches their crystal ball tomorrow and gets it right, would they be 1/1 on that one or 1/2?

Kinda wondering if 122/122 is more of an indicator that the particular person is more devoted to their job and is able to make last second swaps when things become clearer. Maybe some guy who's 50/60 just takes his shot and sticks with it. Maybe goes to their kids sporting events or eats dinner with his family.

They would be 1/1.

I think you're taking these a little too seriously. To answer your question, they'd be 1/1.

Basically, you figure out who has the best sources, and watch for their crystal ball. Also, if all of them are falling in line on one choice, you can pretty much guarantee that will be the choice. Very rarely do you have this many 247 guys making a crystal ball selection without it being sourced and correct. Most of these guys aren't guessing.

Oh, I agree, its looking great, but if something leaks tomorrow, I bet there would be even more 247 guys swapping over to the correct choice. Would love to know how many times they swap. Like 122/122 with only 2 times ever swapping would be a fantastic indicator.

He invited President Geoffroy to the announcement and many other University leaders. Everyone took that as a great sign. Barnes was clearly very naive thinking that all these people would rejoice for him to be going to UNC.
