Brent Metcalf Head Coach?

I wish I was so prescient that I could make an assessment of a wrestler's future career based on only a few matches--and tell all on internet forums to show how smart I am. But I'm not.

I see Sokamoto was Japan's 57kg (125) entry in the freestyle world championships last year. So, he must be pretty good. Hopefully, he will adapt well to folkstyle.

Imagine being upset about a realistic assessment of a wrestler’s results.

Maybe you should look at results. I’m pretty sure all those matches were at 141. He was a 133-pounder being asked to wrestle up a weight what do you expect.

Maybe you should look at the results.

His losses to Botello (UNC backup) and Willochell (Wyoming, 0-2 at NCAAs; pinned) were both at 133.

He was majored in his two losses at 141, to Nebraska's backup and a guy from SDSU who went 0-2 at NCAAs.

It isn't that he doesn't have promise or things can't change but Grice has shown to be clearly better.

Hearing rumblings of staff addition..

Thomas Gilman.
I hated that guy for the stunt he pulled on KD at the social event 5+ years ago.

Later I heard Metcalf talk about the "IC/bubble" Gilman had been in and how it clouds the mind. Then later (if I remember correctly) TG told either KD and/or BM that Metcalf was correct and that it took Gillman to get away from IC/bubble to realize it.

Anyone else recall something like this happening...?

I remember hearing that as well.

I’d love it, and would be a great fit. What is the status of his doping suspension? Can he even be in the room?
May just be semantics, but that phrasing makes it sound like he got popped for PEDs while his suspension was for failures to update his whereabouts with USADA. Also all those instances were after his last competition which was 2024 Olympic trials where he lost to Spencer.

Seems to more like a guy who just walked away from competition after that but didn't retire or inform USADA to take him out of the testing pool or keep up with things, which is still a bit silly.

I'd think he'd be all clear to coach and, if not, his 18-month suspension is up in November this year. Agree he'd be a great fit to work with this group of lightweights.

Boy, not sure how I would feel about a Gilman hire. My douche-o-meter was exploding listening to this guy at Night of Conflict back in the day when he was sent to do TNT's public displays of "we're too good to show up, but make them hate us even more". Mission accomplished, I guess.

Dresser, will have the final say I'm sure, and he has proven he believes people can change and willing to bury the hatchet. But my God....

Our new head coach is a great example of how opinions can change about a person.

Pretty sure Metcalf will have the final say. And of course, Pollard

I was the same way when we hired Metcalf but time as healed old wounds.

Gilman has been out of the IC bubble since 2020, I believe. He seems much more level-headed these days.

Did he do any coaching prior to the 24-25 season with OSU?
Currently a coach at NLWC.

Despite the limited resume, I'd certainly be happy to see him come to ISU.
