Twister Sister Summary - Coaching Possibilities

Lots of speculation about who might replace Fennelly IF he steps down. Here are a few ideas.

Some good names on your list with very good records. Right now we need a statement from the AD as to what is the status of the program. Every day that goes by with not knowing makes what happens next year more difficult.

Any statement right now is a distraction from the men's teams NCAA Tournament run. The players/coaches on this team deserve 100% support by Athletic Dept (and fans).

That's very obvious in today's media environment, not sure why that's hard for some people to grasp.

I don't think he is going anywhere. His ego will not let him reisign unless they guarantee Billy the job. Also doubt if pollard has the balls to do anything.

Hey, if you give JP +$700K to buy out Bill, he would probably have the balls and financial means to do something.

The best way for Billy to get the ISU job would have been take a path similar to TJ. Leverage his ISU experience to become a successful mid-major head coach.

Unless Jamie has long seen that Billy is an exceptional basketball mind and LEADER, IMO Jamie will bring in a coach from the outside. Jamie's been AD long enough to be backed into a corner.

If that’s what Billy wants to do, he should have done that 5 years ago, not the year before Bill retires. If Billy is some sort of basketball savant, then I can’t help but think that other programs would have come calling when they’ve had vacancies, but they haven’t, at least that the public is aware of.

Agree 100% and honestly I'm surprised that Billy hasn't made that move already.

If Billy was going to replace Bill, he would have been named HC in waiting a year or two ago so that HS recruiting wouldn’t have come to a screeching halt like it has. Billy isn’t replacing Bill on a permanent basis, maybe he does on an interim basis if Bill wants to orchestrate that for some invalid selfish reason.

Agree- but I also think Bill has an ego complex that makes him want Billy to take over, or think he has the right to name who he wants. We have what, 3 HS recruits next year, 0 the year after that. I’d rather rip the bandaid off and have a new staff handle the rebuild

He probably doesn’t really want to do so. He has 2 kids and coaching can be exhausting. In Ames he has his family.

IIRC Steven Fennelly also left coaching at UNI for family reasons too
Good point. Always comes down to priorities.

Last time I spoke with Billy Fennelly we were tailgating (can't remember if it was at a spring game or fall FB game tbh) but it was years ago and he played in our bags/cornhole game. Very nice & cool guy, but talking to him for part of an afternoon was far from enough to gauge what his coaching career aspirations are (if he even had any yet back then.)

@acoustimac your list makes more sense than my wing and a prayer idea. It was hire Em Ryan for 250-300,000 give her the current coaching budget. Let her fill her assistants with other hungry young coaches and any money left let her go buy some players she likes.
Get a bunch of young hungry coaches that want to head up their own program in a few yrs. It would either really work or crash and burn like Icarus when he flew to close to the sun.LOL.

It would sure be interesting!

It seems that based on Lyndsey Fennelly’s statement that BF will not retire.
The biggest question is: if Audi leaves, will this change things?
I could see BF sticking around but right now trying to find a landing spot for his kid. If not for next year be working teams next year. If we have a dumpster fire of a team next year, I don’t think he will do the “retire” in August so. Billy can coach a year.

.......and a disaster.
Probably but it would be way more interesting than what we've seen for the last decade and wouldn't cost anymore than what we are doing now.
The days of high coaching salaries need to be reigned in especially for only so-so results. Yeah we make the tourney and lose 1st round consistently. How does Bill's contract compare to the other 32 coaches that lose early, Im guessing he is in that top 10% salary wise easy. Why spend that kind of money on a program that loses millions every yr?
