Yuengling expanding distribution

I like IPAs because I like the way hops taste. It's that simple. Some of them get too sweet, add too much weird ****, get too heavy and syrupy/whatever, but the good ones are all about the flavor of hops.

If you don't like that flavor, you won't like them. If you do, you will. I don't think most people who like IPAs are doing it for show, or whatever. They genuinely enjoy that flavor.

I also like black coffee, horseradish, raw onion, etc. Bitter just kinda works for me.

So….you’re a bitter old man? :D

20+ years ago Michelob Golden Light wasn't sold in Iowa and people would drive to MN to bring back cases of it. Same as Spotted Cow today. Neither are great beers but have/had mythical status.

I remember that while at ISU in the early 00's. The guys who would come back from MN over break were pretty popular. Of course, this was the 20-sided polygon cans, not the true rounds.

I think I've drank it once since they started distro in Iowa.

You beat me to it. Not so much with the horseradish but everything else. I could also sit down and eat a whole ass jar of green olives.

I have never understood the appeal of IPA. To me it tastes like skunky weed smells, which is fine, but not exactly appealing. Its not what I call refreshing in any way, but again thats just my opinion. Obviously, some really like it given its popularity.

I love a smooth stout, a nice amber, and a good ale, etc. Actually, most beer I enjoy, depending on how, why, and where I am drinking it influences my choice in that instant. But I have never liked IPA, I have never found it good for any situation, but I realize everyone has different tastes.

So all that being said, what is the appeal, what do you find good, enjoyable, refreshing about IPA? Im not trying be argumentative, Im genuinely curious.
I have no science to back it up, but I've often wondered if this is the same thing as how Cilantro tastes like soap to me. I can't understand how anyone can eat it on anything. And this is coming from me, a person who has virtually zero hang-ups when it comes to food tastes. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that some people have this gene that almost makes them crave a hoppy beer. I don't drink nearly as much beer as I used to, but if I'm just having a couple to watch the game or out for dinner and having a beer, I always opt for something hoppy.

IPAs we're probably the last beer type I got into but now I like any style as long as it's done well. My preferences kind of change throughout the year and depending on the setting. I will say I've come full beer snob and am now really into good pilsners as my go to.

Since I was forced to go gluten free about the only gluten free beer sold in the Ankeny Hy-Vee that tastes like real beer and is somewhat cheap is an IPA. There are other gluten free beers but Hy-Vee stopped carrying them, are really expensive, or just aren't good. Pre-Celiac I wouldn't touch an IPA.

I drink black coffee every day all day, from the time I get up, until I go to bed.

I have always drank it straight hot and black. Only drink it with cream/sugar or one of those high priced floofy drinks on an extremely rare occasion when I feel like a dessert drink.

Still not a fan of that IPA hops taste.

No political commentary but if you are the type of person who votes with their wallet, do some research on the Yuengling owner.

With the amount of good craft beer available, unless there is nothing else available I’m skipping the Yuengling.
Looked him up and sound like a good reason to try it, thanks

They don't taste the same. I'm just saying that generally, people who like bitter flavors like IPAs. Nothing's ever a perfect match/circle.

You actually might be right about that. I will eat just about anything, There are very few things I dont like. But there are a few things that I absolutely dont like, and usually I am really adverse to those things. I do know genes play a part in tastes.

I also have to say, since I had covid all those years ago, which I lost my complete sense of taste and smell, and took a long time to come back. What I noticed is some things still taste different to me, actually quite a few things do, and I have had to relearn what I do and dont like/prefer. Some things have slowly came back to normal, but it took a long time, and some things still to this day taste different. I often wonder if my taste and smell will ever actually go back to what it was before, at this point I doubt it.

The ironic thing is that is exactly what hops taste like to me - taking a bite out of a bar of soap. I do not get that with cilantro, though.

I used to love IPAs because I was looking for something with more flavor than Busch Light, but I think I've grown out of them. I still will have one every once in a while, but I used to have 3-5 when I'd be drinking, and I just can't do that anymore. Definitely put on a little bit of a beer belly thanks to that, but now I'm more of a lager, pilsner and Guinness fan.

Sounds like my beer evolution as well. Used to love IPAs. Would say I still like them, but never my first choice anymore. I've transitioned to liking lagers and pilsners, and light/low cal beers as well now that I'm on the wrong side of 30.

I will say that one style of beer that has never really resonated with me is the sour/dessert/pastry style. I can sip on one casually if I'm at a brewery, but I'd never buy a sixer of any of them.

Pretty similar to myself.

I'll have 1 or 2 and have to switch to something lighter. I still love the taste, but they fill me up. When I was in my late 20's I could drink IPAs all day and not get tired of it.

I used to love neipa’s but now I’d much rather have a west coast. My favorite style right now is probably hoppy pilsners.

I think it's worth noting that there are several different types of hops (citra, mosaic, cascade, etc) that can taste quite a bit different. That, and there are several different types of IPAs (hazy/NE, west coast, double/imperial, etc) that also vary quite a bit. I like most hazy's I've tried, but am fairly meh on many others.

No, that's a fair price. HyVee last night was $9.99 6-pack lager, $7,99 6-pack lager light, $10.99 6-pack Flight, $13.99 12-pack lager, $14.99 12-pack flight. Those prices are a tad high and they had signage saying that it was a "hot intro price!!!"
Fareway not helping their cause either.
These prices are also high for 12 packs of Yuengling.
