*** Official #7 IOWA STATE vs #2 Arizona Game(Day) Thread ***

The same Duke that is still competing in the conference tournament tonight? Injuries do matter, but there's no denying that ISU team went on a mental tailspin after the Arizona game last year. They lost to Tang in Hilton. This has been talked about by guys like Blum and CW so I'm not just blowing smoke. And I do realize their opinions aren't always correct, but they're a hell of a lot closer to the program than you or I am.
It’s a fun thing for CW to say but KSU beat KU and that same AZ team the next 2 games after beating us so hard to say losing to AZ was the reason we lost to KSU.

Yes the same Duke team that hasn't been the same since losing a vital player in a weaker conference. You also don't mention that KSU went on to beat 4 ranked teams in 3 weeks during that stretch including KU and AZ. Some context matters as they were a talented team with a bad coach.

Notice you didn't mention Tech.

So yes, you are blowing smoke. It's hyperbole to say things like a 'mental tailspin' for a team that still finished 5th in a very good conference despite injuries and things like Cujo being out with sickness.

I suppose you believe people and go along when they say 'they looked like a FF team in January' too right?

Question. Stat I just saw. Why is Arizona getting so many calls in games by the refs?

Arizona has shot 860 free throws this year. 860!!!! Duke has shot 553 free throws. Iowa state has shot 684 free throws. Houston has shot 587. If you are wondering why they are always at the line getting freebies that’s because they are.

They fouled us repeatedly to get in the bonus just in case, but my wife pipes up are they going to foul again to put us at the line so we can only get 2? I thought, damn, maybe so - then Tamin splashes the last 1 but then I'm thinking, "oh crap, they have it last"
Tip the cap, get rested up & prepared, kick ass in the Big Dance
I had the exact same thought....if I were a coach I may have done that given how shots were falling and knowing we needed a 3.

Just noticed that within seconds of that last shot going down, Tamin went and gave Toure a hand slap for his great defense. Now that is a great leader when that's what you think to do in that moment.
You can really see pieces of Tamin shining through Toure and Bateman. I'm gonna miss him but hopefully he's back on the bench coaching someday.

I was watching it delayed on YouTubeTV, so I knew Arizona was going to make the last shot because there was only a minute left on the recording, lol

Tip of the cap to Bradley. Toure played perfect defense on that shot. Great performance for the team. Milan needs to go nuclear again this year but this time in the Final 4. Best team since Fizer. Get it done.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen better defense on a buzzer beater.

Also Toure/Lipsey shutdown Burries and literally took him out of the game.

This is a bit unfair because they also mostly attempt 2s, and you’re more likely to be fouled five feet from the hoop than 22

Del Orso reminds me of Gabe Kalscheur. I don't have any problem with him, he played great. As I said in another thread, AZ has lots of pieces and don't need them all to scorev20 every game. I believe it was said on the broadcast last night that Del Orso has scored 20+ in 5 games this season. He's capable.
Slapping his chest. screaming as if he sacked the QB in the Super Bowl, & jawing it up & celebrating with his bench players during a live ball is why Del Orso is a major douche of a player. Didn't see Milan do anything like that (gyrating celebrations after making shots) - because he does it all the time.
Yeah, he had 20+ in 5 other games - then f'ing act like it.

Now y'all get the Hell off my lawn

Aussie had at least one wide open 3 near the end. Lipsey moved towards him, but he seemed to be struggling with his injury.

To anyone questioning how good Arizona is and whether they are one favorites to win the natty, let me say this: “They beat us with their top scores combining for seven points, and ISU playing great.” Hope we don’t face them again.
In the words of T.J. Otzelberger: "F*** that." I want them again, because that means we're in the Final Four.

First comment since the end of the game and wow what a game, these boys gave it all and it was just a matter of who had the last shot. The growth of the young guys in Toure, Batemon and Pleta has been huge and Buchanan is starting to play again how he did in the pre-conference season.

I've been saying all season that I want to see these guys on a neutral court to get a real gauge of how far they could go in the NCAA tournament and I don't know how anybody can watch these guys and not see that they had Final Four potential. Of course they could also lose in the 2nd round but the ceiling is really high for this team. Either way, it's been a fun season and it continues next week as what better damn well be a 2 seed.

Whatever funk they were in before the second half of the first Arizona State game, it’s like a light bulb turned on. Their defense will determine their fate. They should be able to dictate terms the first two games, maybe even the first three. Whether or not they execute, time will tell

The refs were letting it go both ways, we did not lose tonight because of the refs. They were letting them play the entire game. We made 14 three pointers, but shot 50% from the line, while they were 63% and shot more. If we shot free throws at 75% tonight, the game is OT, shot better than that, and we win.
I disagree.

The easiest way to neutralize a hot team is to get their best player into early foul trouble. When Jefferson went to the bench, Arizona made their run. When he came back, he was a shell of himself making sure he didn’t get the third.

I am not saying Jefferson didn’t foul, but for Krivas to not get ONE foul is preposterous. For Arizona to only have 3 fouls in about 18.5 minutes of the 2nd half is preposterous.

The game was not called equally.

I just rewatched the 2nd half and the shot making in the last five or so minutes was just incredible by both teams. And against great defense. Unbelievably entertaining game
Guys stepped up and elevated their games on our biggest stage yet (Toure,Tamin, Milan, JJeff). And I'd even throw in BB and Pleta with that group. Their physicality vs AZ was great. That bodes well for the Tourney

My one worry with the NCAA Tournament is that Iowa State usually plays very well at the Hilton South tournament riding the wave of their crowd then tend to have letdowns in the big tournament. I think this team is better equipped to handle it because of the experience of the core and, most importantly, because they're healthy unlike some previous years but their overall play is night and day better now than it was a couple of weeks ago and should give us confidence that they can make a run at this.
