New floor for Big 12 MBB/WBB

There's a difference between the floor being "safe" to play on and being something the players are used to playing on. Christian Anderson said in his postgame yesterday "the floor is a bit slippery". Some of our guys had been changing their shoes over the past couple of days. Clearly it feels at least somewhat different and probably takes some amount of adjustment to playing on. It doesn't mean it's garbage and will never make a return in the future. I'm sure there are a lot of things that went into this decision; player safety, liability, and optics for the league. I'm also sure that many are making a way bigger deal out of it than it probably is.

Look at this shiny new surface! >>>> Lots of press coverage.
Whoa, maybe the floor is too slippery? >>>> Lots of press coverage.
Crap, we gotta go back to hardwood. >>>> Lots of press coverage.

Yormark knows what he is doing.

Travis Hines has a very interesting article in the Des Moines Register this morning about what our players thought of the floor, the shoes they were using, and even issues with the lighting from the floor.
It was interesting to hear Cyclone player's take on type of shoe impacting traction.

I liked the court and think it is the future- because of marketing opportunities and fan asthetics.

The issues this week might do more to speed up adoption of LED floor as shoe companies will likely do research to create better grip.

I think I'd rather see the conference taking chances and trying to break new ground even if some of the ideas fail. There are way too many people in that position who call themselves traditionalists but are really just scared of taking chances.

I remember when the Big East (back in the day) gave players six fouls during conference play. That didn't work out too well.

Aren't the marketing opportunities really only for the people at the stadium, because the (far larger) TV audience is getting TV commercials when the play is stopped???

I really don't see that the LED floor does anything for the TV audience. From a TV viewing standpoint, I don't really get the dark gray floor...it blends in with the dark uniforms. It's like I'm watching an old black and white broadcast. The flashing 3-pt line is so subtle that you hardly notice it. And I really didn't notice the effect after a dunk either, because they usually pan away to the player.

In any case, viewers are accustomed to watching the players for action, not the floor. It seems to me that the point of the game is to watch the players, not the floor.

I thought it looked good on TV...but what matters is how the players view the surface in terms of "does it let them play the game the way it is meant to be played"! The only in-game use of the graphics on the court that I noticed was on Pleta's dunk when the area inside the 3-pt arc flashed as if it had been shattered. Were there any other graphics used during the game?
The three point line would flash after a made 3 pointer. When players were at the free throw line, the far end of the court showed their game stats, although you can't see that on tv. Other than that, I can[t say I noticed it much.

Apparently TJ was the only coach voting to keep the glass floor:

In the links I posted earlier, Self said he was not consulted about the floor change. Other articles state Self saying that the decision to change the floor was made before the KU game was over. If that is the case, then Otzelberger, Sampson and LLoyd were the three that voted to change the floor.

Or there was no actual vote, just soliciting of opinions by Yormark.
