House of the Dragon

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms finale is this Sunday and I can't recommend it enough. If you haven't tuned in it should be an easy and fun binge to catch up with only 5 episodes that are like 30-40 minutes each. Fun to be in Westeros with something that has stakes but is not as self-serious as HOTD.
They did a great job with casting. Pretty much gives you an immediate investment in Duncan and Egg

I was waiting for the whole season to drop before binging it. Glad to hear it's worth a watch. Basketball and Olympics have been dominating our tvs lately and I've been looking for something new.

Found the first episode pretty boring...it gets better? I want to watch but that first one turned me off.

I heard there is suppose to be a teaser for the new HOTD season today and thought that is why this thread was bumped.

But I echo the sentiment that KOTSK is good. The adventures of Dunk and Egg are my favorite ASOIAF books. When I first bought them I knocked them all out in a weekend since the 3 stories are only around 330 pages in total. I know GRRM supposedly likes writing them the most currently (even though he just vowed to finish the winds of winter next)

What I like about the KOTSK is that I think it does a good job at adding on stories that aren’t in the novella. However, there were a few conversations dropped which I think would’ve been nice to see in the show.

I thought they should’ve sent more time before the trail of seven of talking about strategy. The only reason I say that is because in the following novellas they reference the tactics dunk uses in the fight. Especially in the third book of “mystery knight”

I also thought they left out the conversation with Steele pate about the weakness of visors which plays a role in the fight and is referenced in the second novella “sworn sword”

I also wish the show was a wee bit closer to the fight described in the fight. In the book dunk is described as completely man handling Aerion once they fight like hogs in the mud with even dunk lifting him in the air similar to the mountain in GOT. I felt like the fight didn’t show how while dunk is not the best at traditional knight combat at 16 but was still a freak of nature in brute strength.

Those are super minor gripes which probably make no difference.

Overall probably my favorite asoiaf media now because it was way closer to the book than the GoT series which pretty much is a different story compared to a song of ice and fire due to limitations.
Regarding your spoiler, I actually loved how they shot the fight. It was chaotic and anxious AND true to the novella. In the novella, you’re also only seeing Dunk’s perspective and only getting brief glimpses of what’s happening in the background.

It also makes the surprise/impact of what happens at the end hit so much harder.

Absolutely keep watching. Thrones’ first couple eps were slow as well.

You will get to love and hate many characters and it will hook you all the way to the end.

Dunk and Egg stories are probably the second-best thing about the GoT universe only behind A Storm of Swords. And I say that as someone who loved Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and an appreciation for Fire & Blood

This is minor but I do wish they went over the whole Tourney lances vs War lances debate in the book. Plus the show leaves off the rules of the fight.

Again, these are nitpicky and, in the end, probably makes no difference, but for a show that i thought was so authentic to the book there was subtle details that I was curious why they left out. For a show that seemed to expand and add on things like the feasting/dancing which isn't in the book. I am curious about the small things they left out. Including the best line in the book by Daeron.

“My brothers have my measure when it comes to fighting and dancing and thinking and reading books, but none of them is half my equal at lying insensible in the mud.”

Yes this exactly, sounds like a great thing to watch after march madness when the sports desert hits.

I think some of that got shaved because a.) it was too technical and may confuse the casual viewer and/or b.) to save time for the flashback. I’ve seen a lot of people complain about the flashback, but I thought it absolutely added to Dunk’s character.

Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s rescue of Dunk after seeing Raef get killed is the impetus for Dunk’s value of protecting the innocent. And, his saying “I’m sorry” to Raef mirrors his last words to Baelor. Bringing the tragedy full circle

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S1 wrapped up last night. Great 1st season; really enjoyed the combination of humor, drama, and action.

I reread "A Hedge Knight" this weekend, and I think that the show was as faithful of an adaptation as I have seen. Not sure how I feel about the change with how Egg and Dunk take off at the end, but I am sure it will play out well in S2.

I concur. It was a fun trip back to Westeros that wasn't bogged down in GRRM mythology building or CGI.

My only complaint is watching the episodes each week felt more like watching a movie on TBS where 5 minute commercial breaks screw up the flow. GoT could get away with it because of the large amount of story lines. This was definitely a 2+ hour movie cut up for HBO.

But it was really good. Just should have waited and binged. ;)

I agree, there is a reason that GRRM wanted it as a movie, but HBO knows there is more money in a weekly show drop. I'd love it if they would drop the whole season as a movie so you could watch it with no breaks.

Yea overall I loved it as a book fan. I felt like some of the changes made the story better and even some of the changes I questioned really don’t matter in the long run so it doesn’t bug me.

I was a bit concerned how they ended it though since it is a departure from the book. I fear it could turn into another HOTD situation will the showrunner just starts creating their own story and departing from the source material. I know there was a theory that maybe Maekar would appear in the second season and clear up the differences, but the actor already confirmed he isn’t in season 2.

I’m curious how close they will be to the second book since sworn sword is a bit more of a slow paced story with less action though there is a romance angle tha could be intriguing. I wouldn’t be upset if they add stuff that the book skips over like seeing Egg’s brother at the citadel.

It was a very enjoyable mini-series. Well acted.

I get that the production company did not want to spend huge $ on battle scenes like GoT or HoD, but I wish the Trial of 7 wouldn't have been shot with so much fog so that the individual battles could be seen better.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a budget thing (at least not the primary reason). That’s how it is in the books. You get very little insight into how the rest of the battle goes, outside of Dunk vs Aerion

It’s interesting I heard on a podcast today that Martin gave the show runners some additional material for this series that isn’t in the books to help bring the show some additional depth.
