I’ve reached the age where I’m smart enough to realize money ain’t everything.Would you leave your job for the same job somewhere else with better pay and benefits? (I'm referring to the players)
And there is no such thing as “the same job”I’ve reached the age where I’m smart enough to realize money ain’t everything.
Amen. I turned down a major promotion years ago that would have meant significantly more money and 'status', but also significantly more pressure and significantly less enjoyment.I’ve reached the age where I’m smart enough to realize money ain’t everything.
Easier schedule the upcoming season is a nice start...How does using the same coaches and same players from Iowa State equate to a NC for Penn State?
I just saw the '11 OSU game on the Big 12 channel and my first thought was, "Look how good those uniforms look." Gold pants with cardinal top and helmet. There was also no doubt as I was flipping the channels that it was ISU. I hate that even I can't tell it is ISU in the Pop Tart bowl defeating Miami unless I look carefully.I’m cautiously optimistic that Rogers has built a roster that can be competitive with the middle tier of B12 teams. CMC did a superb job while in Ames and represented the school with class. Time to move on and get behind the new coach. I thought the use of the color black had run its course too. I’ll laugh if PSU comes out in black sometime.
It's hard for me to believe they won't succeed. I've looked at their schedule, its cakewalk. Long term I don't know, but next year will definitely be well above the 6-6 they had this year. Look what Indiana succeeded with and then built from in the little 10.that's bull **** after he took all the players he wanted and they won't succeed at PSU
Absolutely true. But as the E IA University found out, you can run a soft schedule and get boat races in the conf championship. If they make the CFP, they might be the first Power 4 to lose to a G5. People will know a fraud and call it out.Easier schedule the upcoming season is a nice start...
Curt Cignetti as a coach is a whole other level than CMC. If you gave CMC the same players on Indiana do you think he’d have won a natty this year? I don’t. I like(d) CMC, but he was really good at losing games he shouldn’t have. It's hard for me to believe they won't succeed. I've looked at their schedule, it’s cakewalk. Long term I don't know, but next year will definitely be well above the 6-6 they had this year. Look what Indiana succeeded with and then built from in the little 10.
No, but provides a lot of security.I’ve reached the age where I’m smart enough to realize money ain’t everything.
I’d bet a few paychecks that the number of those “kids” who move to a new school for money and wisely invest that 100k is almost zeroNo, but provides a lot of security.
A 21 year old has one school offer him $250k to play and another $150k. If the kid and his family invest just the incremental $100k, that's life changing. Likely over $2.5M by the time the kid retires.
One thing which most people don't consider is 'expectations'. I've always commanded a decent salary, but with it comes the responsibility of 'returns'. That's incredibly stressful. This wouldn't be an issue if I were making 'widgets', but anyone in technology knows that 'management' has little to zero idea of what it takes to do a job they know little about.Would you leave your job for the same job somewhere else with better pay and benefits? (I'm referring to the players)
Winner of the most absurd post on the interwebs for the week. Check Cyclones in the NFL during the Campbell era versus the prior 50 years. To say he couldn’t evaluate talent is sour grapes.Rogers is probably better at talent evaluation than Campbell, Campbell was more of a 4 sport athlete recruiter from a good family. Rogers literally doesnt care about all that, he is more like, how hard can I push you and a tape reader. I honestly doubt there was much input that Rogers put into action. Also Campbell realizes his only chance at a statue is Ames so he need to keep on good terms.
It seems inconceivable that Matt Campbell didn't look at next year's Penn State schedule as part of his decision. I'm sure he also pointed out to the ISU players that PSU has an almost guaranteed 10 wins. That will put you in the playoffs just because you are B1G, regardless the fact you beat a bunch of creampuffs. Given a probably 99% probability of making the playoffs, no wonder every player went to PSU that could go. Well, almost everyone. It's hard for me to believe they won't succeed. I've looked at their schedule, its cakewalk. Long term I don't know, but next year will definitely be well above the 6-6 they had this year. Look what Indiana succeeded with and then built from in the little 10.
This is a good summary, but you left off that Campbell gave everyone that wanted to stay an inflated idea of how much money they should demand to stay. CJR didn't bite and established his own values. Players felt unwanted because they didn't get what they demanded, not that CJR didn't want them to stay. JCR and staff should write a book on game theory for college football coaches. This is a little deeper than "Campbell helped with the roster." A few things happened and I'm not perfectly sure in which order but I don't think it went as planned
-Initially there was cooperation, everyone understood Campbell was taking some guys
-Campbell took more guys than initially intimated
-Rogers didn't want A LOT more guys than the old staff thought he should have
-Some old staff guys were very mad JR wasn't just trying to keep everyone
-Essentially Campbell thought he could still control the roster and JR wasn't up for that
-I believe Campbell gave some guys spots at PSU that he didn't intend because JR didn't want to keep them
-It was made very clear this is not MCU and right or wrong, that was a reality I don't think MC had foreseen
None of this, IMO, is egregious on anyone's part. It is just how all of this goes in the game right now. I think the rub was when Matt Campbell came to the realization that the next guy was coming in with a fresh perspective and it was his program now. Both positions are completely defensible, I had some questions about Rogers cutting guys loose but with the destinations of a lot of them, it's also hard to disagree with that at this point.
