So we can't question Pollard on here anymore?

Every athletic director who is worth his salary has a list of candidates ready to go in this type situation. I don't think a dither-by-committee approach adds anything to the process. Getting a replacement onboard as soon as possible was a good attempt to stabilize the situation. There are no guarantees in hiring a new coach, but I've not heard of any red flags. We'll just have to see how Mr. Rogers does once he's in the neighborhood.
Exactly. If we go with search committee, all this is going on with no FB staff. How you feelin then? With CJFR, we have a recruiting class, we have a staff, we cleared payroll space, and, I’ll guarantee you, a plan for portal players. Without him, nothing going on but a search.

JP is obviously a smart guy but he can be an autocrat. Didn’t love the Rodgers hire TBH. He might be a good coach but JP making a unilateral decision about the most important job in the athletics department literally hours after Campbell leaves is not good leadership. Even if Rodgers is the guy I don’t see why you move that quickly. No serious business or corporation would hire without doing a formal job search. It was rash and if it doesn’t work out it’s 100% on JP.

So you wanted things to drag out. Disagree. Good leadership is to have a plan in place for when the unexpected happens. Pollard had a plan. He implemented the plan. And Pollard received input from Coach Otz about Rogers. Otz said if you can get him do it. If you know who you want then you don’t mess around. This open up the search BS is what led us to hire Steve Prohm. Terrible basketball coach.

Who was your hotshot HC favorite you wanted us to get?

What gets me is the belief held by so many that Pollard has done this amazing job and we would be totally screwed without him. He has a so-so hit rate on coaching hires. Facilities and fan support have improved during his time, but the amount of money pumped into college sports has also increased exponentially.
No one bats a thousand but his have been incredibly good especially considering he has never had the funds to outbid other P4 schools. Really bad take on this. Worst was Prohm but remember that happened very late since Fred took a NBA job well after all college coaching changes had happened.

Pollards tenure has had two full searches with all the bells and whistles. Those gave us Gene Chizik and Steve Prohm.

The other searches where he identified and zeroed in on “his guy?” Fred Hoiberg, Matt Campbell and TJ Otzelberger.

Can’t remember the full process when Rhoads was hired.
CPR was not a long search, IIRC. It obviously took longer but was pretty short. Football timeframe only allows you a short window if you don’t fire your coach.

Maybe if your looking to hire entry or mid-level managers.

But from my experience when hiring higher level positions it is pretty common to target a specific candidate based on: industry success, relationship with hiring manager, etc.

And as far a JP making a unilateral decision, that's his job as Athletics Director- to hire coaches! I'd rather have the AD lead the change vs. handing it off to a search firm.

Again, 2 for 4 on MBB coaches and 1 for 3 on FB coaches with one yet to be seen. We do not lack the funds to make good hires.

The horror.

He led one of the best athletic departments in the country for two decades because he’s good at his job.
My impression was Gene was good at hiring and managing people but he was not good at managing finances. I was told he was a big picture guy, but horrible with details, and that caused people some frustration.

At OSU, he was able to focus on what he was good at because he had a limitless budget.

A camel is a horse built by committee. Pollard operates how a real leader does. Makes decisions and leads. Doesn’t waste time setting up cya meetings.

I’m not sure if this is on-topic or not, but can someone explain how I’m watching a Utah team who’s coach walked out on them, only to end up at a better historical program than all but about 3 or 4 in the country, yet I’m not only not watching Iowa State play in a bowl game, I am seeing 50 guys hit the portal and the university is being docked $500K to boot?

****…Washington State got their **** together and they made their bowl game appearance too.

Unless all 50 of these guys go to Penn State, which would equate to cult behavior (they won’t all go to Penn State, in case I need to say that), I think it’s totally rational to have questions, and who’s left to answer for those questions?
