Not exactly correct.
He has allocations for each sport based on the $20M rev share. But if a donor says they want $X to go to that sport, then it will. However, that means it counts toward the allocation to that sport. For example, if a donor says they want to give $1M to WBB, and the ADs allocation is $750k, that means that $1M goes to WBB and no general AD funds go to WBB (at least as long as their general AD funds are <$20M). It does not mean that WBB gets their AD allocation of $750k PLUS the sport-specific donation of $1M.
Any sport-specific donations go toward those sports, are counted as part of the allocation. If it's over, so be it. AD can't just decide what to do if the donor intent is specified, and he's not going to turn down donations if they specify a sport.
It's a perfectly reasonable approach. There are two approaches to managing general AD donations and sports-specific donations. Both are going to have potential pros and cons for sports, depending on how each of the two categories of donations come in. No matter what, sport-specific donations are going to that sport. The decision is then how to handle general AD donations. you can either say all general AD donations are going to be proportionally divided. Or you can do what Pollard has done, set allocations for each based on $20M, and have sports-specific donations hit that allocation off the top.
People keep raising these allocation figures and are outraged that any AD funds got to sports other than MBB and FB. I suspect that JP has a pretty good idea that each year there have been and will be some level of donations that are earmarked for wrestling, WBB, and other sports. And these allocations he stated are taking that into account. In other words, any general AD donations that are not sports-specific are probably almost, if not completely going to FB and MBB.
