***Official portal tracker thread***

When we look back it will be called the Campbell era just like it was the Earle Bruce era. I was at school for the later. I remember the players who gave all for ISU, not so much the coach other than he left for Ohio State where he pretty much sucked. Never followed Bruce after he left. Didn’t hate him for leaving, but also didn’t really care. I’m sure it will be the same with Campbell. We will remember players like Purdy and Hall and not so much the coach or staff.
At ISU the same time as you. Earl Bruce didn't do poorly at his next school (4 B10 Championships in 10 years), but not enough to satisfy big heads. But, what wasn't emphasized is how far Criner and Duncan brought our program down. Thus, by comparison, Bruce retained a longer leash of notoriety. If Rogers does well, I suspect CMC will become an afterthought quicker than most people may realize. But, like Bruce, if Rogers performs akin to Duncan or Criner, CMC's legacy will grow.

This might be an unpopular take:

As nice as it has been to see Cyclone football success all JP has to do is avoid making the fanbase feel hopeless and avoid relegation (so ISU can afgord afford a Top 25 basketball roster).

If Rogers flails for a couple years, get a new guy and start over. It’ll be fine.

That's not going to happen. JP isn't cutting him after a couple years.

The new coaching staff had to tell guys to put their names in the portal and test the waters. I expected an exodus of players but 42 could also mean you pissed guys off out of the gate. Throw in this years seniors and we’re down 57 players.

Guys with clear paths to playing time are in the portal and it doesn’t make sense unless they were told to? I’m so confused—-why enter the portal if you are likely to play next year or your next best option is to transfer down a level and play for nothing? Penn State will end up with 10-12 guys and the rest will be at MAC/Sun Belt schools at best.
I don't know if the new staff told guys to head to the portal in every case. But I do believe in their sit down with Rogers he would have told them how he sees them being used going forward, and the GM would simultaneously give them an idea how they would be valued for that under ISU rev share distribution. Players would then have information to decide, even if ISU would want them back. Because this is the first time players have had the option to transfer for rev share at another school, I believe many are not acting with complete information other than what they would be getting from ISU.

What Bruce did at ISU was nothing short of impossible. Not only the money advantage for the Nebraska's and Oklahoma's.......but there was no scholarship limit. Those schools stock piled all the studs and KEPT them for 4 years. Remember "red shirts"?

I doubt Campbell would have survived much more than a few seasons at ISU against those odds.

This is not unique, to ISU. Rogers had to bring in something Like 70 new players at WSU, last year. WVU did last year too, and are on pace to lose a ton this year even without a new coach. Coach Prime had as many or more his first year. UNC brought it basically the entire roster too, I believe.

Hell, there are a lot of schools that are losing dozens of players, and have lost dozens every year, even without a new coach. ISU has been mostly insulated from it, up to this point, but this is how it is now.

Coaches have no loyalty, players have no loyalty, its all about who has the biggest bag. The transfer portal is all about getting that next big pay check. You have boosters pretending to pay players for NIL deals when it is just paying to play. You have a so called cap that means absolutely nothing. You have a transfer portal with no actual control, so anyone can go to the highest bidder. You have rules like no contact outside the portal, where no on follows, and uses under the table, back doors to contact players to get them in the portal and offer them big deals. And absolutely no one in power that can or will do anything about it.

Its strange to me when you hear of players passing up on deals to stay at ISU etc, when they were never in the portal, and by rule they should not have had such offers or deals by rule, because they are not supposed to be contacted until they enter said portal.

College sports are taking all of the bad aspects of pro sports on, with none of the rules or controls that pro sports have to control them. It is destroying college athletics and I am not sure we will ever get that genie back in the bottle.

1973 scholarship limits of 105 put in place. 95 scholarship limit in 1978. Unlimited number of walkons

Someone mentioned that he was beatingout Palano for playing time later this year. Ill take them both please. If so, the LB core would be upgraded already.
I hope you're right... but don't count on that just yet. I don't think Palano or this guy would have started for us this year, and might have been 3rd string?

I hope CW is right that most of these WSU guys will be depth, but the starters will be coming in the portal from elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong on that? I just know I'll be cheering on whoever is playing for us next fall, that's all.

I'm assuming at least a slow start to the season but we should be kind of used to that.
This might be overly optimistic, but I’m guessing they start 2-4 and end up somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5.

That’ll be pretty damn good, all things considered.

You kinda answer your own question. If they end up at MAC/sunbelt teams. That may be where Jimmy believes they belong.

If we win more than 6 games there ought to be a lot of positive press around the rebuild. Could be the best thing that happens.

But JP’s guy is good for awhile either way. If we have a couple of losing seasons he’s got a lot of cover - even if he did have a part in running these guys off as some people have implied.

Both are better than what we had

I’m not sure you could make that determination after 3 weeks and one sit down conversation with a kid. What would you base that off of?
