The quick turnaround hire was done with the belief it would limit the mass transfer out. We'll see how it all plays out but I wish a coaching search was done.

I’m not sure a coaching search would have made much difference. If there is any truth to Matt wanting Mouser to take over, and trying to burn it down when we declined. Not sure what a search would have changed anything. At least we got a guy who has replaced a roster in this environment. Also he is likely a high quality coach. Can’t ask for more than that.

Can’t just get to the CFP. That’s not enough. Have to “regularly beat Top 10 teams.” That’s from their AD. It’s largely the fail that got Franklin fired. So he as to beat Ohio St, Michigan, and Oregon regularly. That’s who WE ARE think they are.
They have a good work around next year. They won't have to beat any Top 10 teams. Best team they play is Michigan. No Oho State, Oregon, or Indiana on the schedule. If they go 9-3 next year the Matt Campbell honeymoon at Penn State will be quickly over.

If they go 9-3 it means they've lost to a couple undesirables not great with an arrogant fanbase.

I'm now looking at this whole CMC thing differently. I bought into the CMC "I love developing players", "the absolute best fans in the nation", "building something special". What I didn't expect was his own "character assassination" (strong words, but in the end he killed his own character). In the end, it really was all about winning and money. There's the whole closer to family thing, but let's be serious: his work hours will still be the same and that's a bigger obstacle to overcome than the hours to where he grew up. And, let's face it: 2.5 hours by car or 2.5 hours by plane ... too close to be the reason.

All this aside, I place the blame of my frustration all on myself for buying into coach speak. Which brings me to my final point: Rogers, being the quiet type, I don't have to listen to as much. :D

So, #1 being closer to family is more about his wife and kids. And his family can visit way easier. And a airplane ride is not like pulling out of your driveway.

I'm not saying you are right or wrong about his true rationale, but when you post ridiculous statements about some of the reasons he gave, you sound like a petty, whiny crybaby and it undercuts your entire argument.

I don't get the hate that a lot of people are giving Matt for leaving for PSU. He owes ISU nothing. He rebuilt us into a respectable program and left it in a better place. I know many feel betrayed because of the mass exodus but there is the other end of the process yet to happen.

As Cyclone fan and seeing the deal he got I would tell Matt he would be an idiot if he didn't take the PSU job to his face.

So we could be less prepared for Jan2?
So we had even less chance of retaining players?

If there’s a better hire for us than Jimmy I’d love to hear it.

Midwest winner. Spent 13 years in SD.

Jumped to WSU because our AD told him he needed to do it if he wanted this job one day.

Has family here and considers the MW home.

Took 70 transfers to 7-6 in a much worse situation than Iowa St faces, with a fraction of the money.

Knows TJ & TJ basically dubs him FB TJ.

Until he wins here, we can’t say for sure…but damn if this doesn’t look like a home run!

No one from Campbell’s tree was probably coming back. No major named coach was coming. Roll the dice on another Gene Chizik hire?

Saban & Meyer weren’t returning JP’s text messages.
He's lost 90% of our returning players. I'm not going to say he's going to be a failure, but you can't say that this is looking like a home run hire.

I think it's fair to say that in less than a month, CMC has really done some damage to his legacy at Iowa State.

Not necessarily his fault - before this NIL and Transfer Portal world, I think we'd all still feel the same. But the fact he's not giving some Penn State players the time of day so he can take Iowa State guys pretty much destroys the loyalty and culture thing he's built his name on.

Why?

Hopefully this looks about like it has for the same folks who thought this even two seasons into TJ making the NCAA tournament.
I get it. It feels like it was a quick hire, and part of the reason is what done so quickly was to prevent a max exodus. If you still end up having the max exodus, i think it’s fair to ask whether it would have been better to take a little longer.

He doesn’t, but then Iowa State fans don’t really owe him anything either.

And has he left the team in a better place after this exodus? Yes, he had a successful tenure here, but did he really leave a foundation for the next coach to build upon?

Of the 70 guys that left Washington State when Jimmy was hired

28 went lower level
14 went P5, not including Wake Forest
10 went back to Washington State
9 left football altogether
9 went to Wake Forest to follow their coach

That 2024 team was also, I'd argue, similar to Iowa State 2025. Incredible offensive players (John Mateer, Utah's starting RB, Arizona's #1 WR) yet finished just 8-5.

Finally a reasonable response. Matt took over one of the worst programs in CFB and made us relevant for 10 years. Since 1920, we had 20 coaches. One of them had a winning record. The players leaving now came to ISU, in many cases, because of him. They know nothing about Jimmy and have a chance for a do over. And the ones being hated on are the guy who is our winningest coach who was loyal for 10 years and the players?

Given that number, and the way that this has gone for us so far, I get the impression that Rogers might be a little like TJ in his approach. Just "this is what we are going to do, this is how we're going to do it, if you want to be part of that (and your skillset fits that), then you are welcome to stay". No big money, no big promises.

You could easily blow your budget just trying to retain a core of the team who either don't fit what you want to do, or are there simply because the money was right. Probably better to keep those who are completely on board with Iowa State and the new staff, and reload with guys who want to play for this staff.
Totally. CW and Blum both said on last weeks pod that they believed there's a world Jimmy and Co could've kept Rocco and Rocco might've stayed for less, but do you really want to blow 25% of your budget on a QB who doesn't fit your scheme and is leaving next year anyway, or can you spend that money better filling out the rest of the roster

Let me be clear. I don't 'hate' anyone. I'm just stating a fact that for all his speak, he left for the things he never spoke about. And, if you read my post, I blame myself for being so gullible.
