You are correct. A prominent lawyer in Pennsylvania was behind the funding to get Cael to jump. Big pay raise. If I recall the situation correctly, a very big booster at PSU holding a very big bag of cash, had a lot to do with his move.

Seriously? I've never heard that story before and it kinda doesn't seem like Campbell's style.I can't stand Cael any more, and especially don't like Penn State, but to be fair, it was Campbell who showed up at Dresser's doorstep in Virginia to recruit Dresser away from V-Tech. That being said, Dresser was an Iowa native (Humbolt) and grew up as a Cyclone fan despite the fact that he wrestled for the Hoks.
The reality is far more bizarre. It was resources that swayed Gable. How about tape? A real head scratcher was ISU being stingy on how much athletic tape gable had access to. Iowa sent Gable an entire box. That was just one piece of the bizarre recruitment by Iowa. Behind the scenes there was also Les Anderson hoping to be the heir apparent to Nichols. That one surprised me at the time as I got to work with him at summer camps. Gibbons obviously worked out in the end though.Gable left because ISU would not pay him 4,000 dollars to be Harold Nichols assistant. That's why that one hurts like hell still because that is chicken feed even back then.
Would be a real shame if Iowa state athletics were still ran like that. The reality is far more bizarre. It was resources that swayed Gable. How about tape? He showed up. It used to happen all the time, lately no because of the hires. TJ because of the relationship and JR because there wasn’t time in that window.Seriously? I've never heard that story before and it kinda doesn't seem like Campbell's style.
Now that I read that, I kind of remember that. I think he flew out there with Jamie to get him.Seriously? I've never heard that story before and it kinda doesn't seem like Campbell's style.
Yeah, remember the beating he had his team put on WSU in NCAA tourney a couple of seasons ago. https://cyclones.com/news/2024/3/23...victory-no-4-isu-overcomes-no-25-wsu-in-omahaTJ hates Wazzou with the heat of a million suns. I've seen many interviews.
He's coming from Washington State, bear with me here but that's a different state from South Dakota.
The only interaction I had with Cael in my time in Ames was I nearly ran him over in a parking lot his Senior year. Looking back I'm a little disappointed in myself for hitting the brakes.
Otzelberger came from UNLV... by way of SDSU. Just like Rogers came from WSU... by way of SDSU. Not quite figuring how this is so difficult for you to understand.
Gable didn’t leverage his status to get the ISU coaching job and force out Nichols. Pretty sure Cael used the Ohio State opening as a way to force out Douglas.Cael is just another Gable. Thanks for the memories but will be a blip on the radar and have a banner….but 20 years from now nobody will even remember he went to Iowa state.
When I was at ISU most profs in my experience either didn't care about the athletes or seemed to want to make an example out of them and make sure they didn't think they could get away with anything. He was in one of my art history class and I saw he got a 97/100 on a test being passed back.
It wasn't the kind of test you could get 97/100 without studying a lot, countless images/dates/names/facts needed to be memorized so either he really studied hard or star athletes just get good grades passed out. It would have been an overly tough class to take as an elective if you weren't an art/design major but more interesting than most classes.

Our professor was the last guy who would be a sports fan, I just took it as Cael was a very serious student when I saw the grade.
I think i t depended on the professor. I had a couple that were quite chatty and showed favoritism to some athletes and others that obviously didn't care for sports and treated them like any other student. When I was at ISU most profs in my experience either didn't care about the athletes or seemed to want to make an example out of them and make sure they didn't think they could get away with anything.
Gable and Cael left under totally different circumstances
