No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

Were you going to go if ISU's scout team played?
For me - 1st and foremost I support the jersey, or better said the name on the front of the jersey. So yes…I would gladly support that team.

That said, if they don’t support the university…and don’t care about the fans…they can go find any field of grass off campus to play their game on. I’m not interested in watching that team.

You understand that there's a whole bunch of players from various sports at ISU over the last...several decades that were likely there for the scholarship and not much more and you cheered for them.

There's been plenty, probably most, that bled the cardinal and gold but playing a sport for money (scholarship) has always had a transactional piece.

I imagine fans look back very fondly of when they had to start a WR at QB to get boat raced by K State in a bowl game. We should be so lucky.

Remember like 6 weeks ago when an OL was kicking off in Boulder and people were saying the season was over?

And in true ISU fashion, they won three games in a row only to have to reject a bowl bid because a mighty Big 10 moneybags stooped to take our coach as their fifth choice.

I agree with this - not sure I understand your point…?

That ******** about players not owing you anything doesn't make much sense since they never did.
Sorry - I guess I misunderstood the point of all of this. Why do they get to wear the jerseys they wear and play in a stadium that holds 60,000+?

My point was they can go play football anytime/anywhere they want. If they wish to wear that jersey, play in that place, and get paid what they are playing…there needs to be some accountability (and should be some respect and appreciation shown).

Playing football any time you want actually isn't very plausible. It's not like a game of catch or shooting baskets. Like are they supposed to get a bunch of pads and 21 friends and make up a field?

What does 'accountability' look like? How do you apply that?

They get to wear the jersey in front of thousands because they're good at the sport and got a scholarship to do so or were allowed to walk on.

Whether they care about the fans, community, etc. comes down to their own experience or perception.

I mean…good for you then. You’re in, so they have the beginnings of a fanbase.

I’m not going to address the first part because you know as well as I do that they can organize as well as they want to on their own dime. Or perhaps you and others like you can support them.

The last part I will address to say that again, I have supported them because the idea was that they played for/represented the school that I love. They appear to be playing either solely for themselves…or only for their coach. If they’re not interested in the school, I’m not interested in them. And I have no power to do this (obviously), but I would not allow them to wear that jersey or play on that field again if it were up to me. I still support Iowa State athletics, so perhaps I’ll still be supporting the football team financially without directly intending to do so. But I’m not directly doing anything until I get the indication things have been turned around.

So are you saying you're mad that they're not playing in a bowl game, but that if they were you wouldn't let them play since they're just playing for the coach?

Did you feel the same way about Breece Hall? He sat out a bowl game. Or any ISU athlete that left early to go make pro money?

How are you going to know things have been 'turned around' when it's been this way for likely your entire time being a fan?

Do we even know why ISU rejected the bowl game? Like are there any coaches left that could even conduct a practice let alone position groups?

I’m not really interested in arguing this with you. You obviously have a different stance, and that’s fine. You’re allowed. I support the school and therefore ideally want to support the team. TJ consistently talks about the fans and how it’s an honor and privilege to represent Iowa State. If Rogers cleans house and says the same…I’ll be inclined to come back.

Over 100 players in the sidelines for home games every Saturday and now all of a sudden all of them a injured?

Weird how 9 days ago we were able to field a full team and even win a game. Oklahoma State lost their coach 6 weeks ago and were still going.

Iowa State is upset their coach left so they quit on the University and the fans. It's as simple as that. How are any of these players going to handle loss if they just quit?

Welcome to the real world, so if my boss that I really like and hired me decides to get a new job I should just immediately quit too?
Trust me PLENTY of people look for a new job when their boss quits, retires, or gets terminated..

This would have been deeply disappointing for me once upon a time. As it stands, I don't get terribly excited by an exhibition where team A is missing their head coach and 5 starters and team B lost their coordinator and 7 starters.

The playoff needs to be reworked to 24 teams with set criteria (read: no committee designed to place its thumbs on the scales) and what remains of the bowl system needs to have NIL payouts (or NIL contracts need to have specific rules regarding participation).

Several of you talk like you KNOW that is what is going to happen. None of us know who is staying, who is leaving. For all you know 95% of the players would be willing or able to play in the game.

Ok if Rocco does leave, you dont think the few behind him would not want to step up into that roll, you think someone is going to be willing to pay more for our backup than us? For a backup? You dont think having an extra few weeks of practice for say Manske and then the experience of starting a Bowl game would be a huge benefit for next year?

Give me a break. Even if it is all the backups and scout team, some of those may be our starters next year, and those couple weeks for them to practice as a starter, to start and play in a bowl game, that could be a huge deal.

Thats not even talking about the $500K fine, plus the loss of the share of the bowl payouts from those bowls we didnt fill. Then turning around and saying we need money. BS!
