No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

To boil your post down, I think what you’re missing is most of these players are entering the transfer portal and won’t be on the team come the bowl game. So we probably won’t have an adequate number of players to field a team, literally.

Akin to an employee quitting their job.
It'll be interesting to see how many portal but return. If you are 2nd string on down, staying probably isnt a bad choice.

For sure. Some may do that. It will be interesting.

But they’re not going to commit to play in a game while they’re weighing options in the portal.

Here is my take.

I get bombarded constantly from ISU for money. Give to the Alumni Association, Give to Cyclone Club, Give to the Gridiron Club, Give to the ISU Foundation, Give to WeWill, Give to this auction, Give, Give, Give.

Then we hear how poor we are, how we are in a deficit, how we cant fund NIL, how everyone has more, how we might not be able to afford the light bill next month whatever.

But we paid players to come play at ISU, we paid Coaches to coach at ISU, we expected fans to give, to show up, to buy gear, etc.

Now instead of going to a bowl, and earning a share of the bowl payout, to give fans one more chance to cheer for this team, to have a destination to go this holiday season, to have one more feel good thing about this season, to possibly get a rare 9th win, we say piss on it, we dont need the money, we dont care that these players and coaches dont want to fulfill their obligation to play/coach, we dont care about the fanbase and their feelings, and beyond that we have plenty of money that we dont need the bowl pay, and we can afford the $500K fine.

Sorry, when I get asked by all those emails all those phone calls begging for money, I am going to say you didnt need my money in December, you had so much you didnt need the bowl money and had so much you could afford a $500K fine. You didnt want me to attend a bowl, or spend money on tickets, gear, travel, etc at a bowl destination.

So ISU didnt need me or my money for any of that, ISU doesnt need my money for anything else. Im done paying out the nose to be a fan. Especially when that money doesn not come with any kind of obligation for them to live up to their end of the bargain.

It sucks, but that is the way it is, in the current state of college athletics and how ISU is handling it.

Many will leave foolishly. And squander a great opportunity at Ames.
Bingo! Nailed it! It's insane how many players have left here in the past and ended up at much lesser programs. Most of them believe they are better than they really are, and think they can go somewhere else for more... or that it will be better than here somewhere else... and I'd bet MOST times it is not the case.

Look at how many college athletes declare for the draft every year.... and never sniff the pros.

They are not playing because they don't have enough players. You can't send 11 players and ask them to play both ways to satisfy the bowl system. That being said, fining them is not right given the circumstances.

There are going to be some surprised players.

He bailed on WSU after preaching loyalty when he was hired. Something tells me the players may not be inclined to listen.
Who can guarantee he will mention loyalty? He can just put it bluntly that this is a business after all, would love the players to give him a chance but understand this is a business decision.

Same with CMC. Would the players be inclined to listen to CMC preaching about loyalty TODAY or Yesterday?

I cant remember exactly from Covid time, but I think the rule is 40-45 players are required, its in that ball park anyway. That would mean we would need at least half the team leave to not have enough officially. That being said the portal doesnt open until next month, they 100% could and should fulfill their obligation to ISU, to the Fanbase, to the bowl destination, to the conference, and really to their Teammates that want to play, that might be there last chance etc. Sorry, when they took their check they committed to play and have certain obligations or they should give that pay back, which will never happen. The problem is it has become acceptable to sit out, to quit on your team, to hold out for more, to go to the highest bidder. In this situation I guess most would do the same thing I dont necessarily fault them for it, I more fault the overall system, the system that created the atmosphere, the system that made all of this ok and norm. If it was unacceptable from day 1 for everyone this would not be an issue.

agree with you but have a question, who was going to be the coach?

I volunteer.

Remember those 1980's Miami Hurricanes teams, prepare to be entertained. I just hope we have someone on the team that can do a backflip in the endzone when we score a TD. And don't expect any touch backs on kickoffs because the celebration penalties after scoring will have us kicking off from our own goal line.

I don’t think the transfer portal part is true. A special, 30-day portal opens for any players on teams’ whose coaches left/were let go, 5 days after a new coach is hired. Which I think is tomorrow for us (I believe, not sure when the contract was signed). So, the portal will open in 12/13 for our guys.

agree with you but have a question, who was going to be the coach?
Who is coaching Ol miss in their Playoff?
Who is coaching Washington State in their bowl?
Who is coaching Penn State in their Bowl?
Who is coaching LSU in their Bowl?

Etc.?

This happens all the time, and somehow teams find someone to coach, and as I said, those coaches are paid just like the players, they have an obligation to finish the job too.

That being said, call up coach Mac, call up Ames High coach, let one of the GAs coach, I really dont care. Do they know the system, maybe, do they know the players, maybe, at the end of the day who really cares, go have some fun, and blow off some steam, and fulfill the commitment. Im sure there is a few seniors on this team that wouldnt care who coached them, to have one last experience at this point.

Yeah you might be right, that doesnt mean they couldnt play in a bowl on say the 26th and still enter said portal. That 30 day window would cover that all the way until the main portal opens in January. So they have plenty of time to still transfer, even before the majority of players transfer in January.

Getting woodshedded in a bowl by Navy or Missouri would not be fun....

Just seeing this for the first time, and my immediate reaction is that this is a slap in the face to the fans…and not the way to build NIL support. Maybe I’ll feel different after having some time to think about it…but not happy right now.

pretty sure that’s only for coaching changes happening starting in January. There’s no actual portal in December but coaches can still contact players.

ooh is that one of those hypothetical games the SEC talks about? Ive always wanted to watch one of those!!

You dont know that would happen. It might, but then again no one would fault them for it either, at that point everyone would know the situation too.

Being a quitter is not fun in my book either.

Paying $500K that we supposedly cant afford is not fun in my book either?

Kind of wild looking back at Ireland, 3+ months later both teams lost their coaches and vetoed the bowl game due to the turmoil.
for whatever reason I feel like K-State is going to come out ahead of due to Klein being an alum and K-State donors/fans loving him.
