No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

I’ll be curious how much, if at all, Campbell comments on the aftermath in Ames during his Ped St acceptance presser.
I bet he will be complimentary of Iowa State but I doubt he’ll say much. Penn State fans don’t care, and Iowa State fans don’t want to hear from him on it.
Can only push people so far and so often….
And I get it if people are saying “this is it, I’m never watching again” over and over. But I think it’s fair for people to say that they’re becoming less and less interested/invested. I know I am.
It's a business.
Loyal sons forever true* and we’ll fight that battle through*

*unless our coach leaves, then we’re out of here

It will. It’s just a slap in the face to people that have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours supporting them. Thousands of us flew across the world to support them. To say its because we dont have enough players is honestly horse****. We just watched them play an entire season playing guys that otherwise wouldnt have seen the field without injuries. Let those guys play if nobody else will
It takes an immense amount of coordination and effort to plan and execute a bowl trip, plus coaching up 100+ athletes in a new scheme, etc.

The only way to do it would be if someone like Heacock was retiring and stayed to coach. I couldn’t imagine a staff coming in and trying to do bowl prep and coordination on top of recruiting the current player and the portal and hiring a staff.

I could see a critique that JP should have said it was his decision, not the players, but I’m guessing they would have made it work if the players voted to play - but it would have been chaotic at best.

I don’t necessarily disagree but if so, what is point? Go thru the motions of competing “at the highest level”?
Exactly my thinking. It’s not just that a good coach leaves. You get gutted - coaches leave, players leave, and fans are asked to love the program again.

Thanks to all who are commenting. This has been a rough few days. This forums helps out with the Cyclone Nation!

I think many are upset about the following areas:
- Campbell departed Iowa State for a better program with more NIL resources, this emphasizes we are the "have-not"
- Iowa State has to start over with a new coach and and uncertain future
- Iowa State has turned down a bowl - knowing we do not get many of these opportunities and have not reached 8 or 9 wins in the school's history many times
- Many of the players, including Rocco and defense stars, will likely depart and they voted not to participate in a bowl game

All of this does not look good if you are an Iowa State fan. I thought we were in a better position, but I guess I was wrong.

Respect the players. I learned a long time ago that one cannot be motivated unless they want to be motivated. I'm 100 percent behind the wishes of the players. They are banged up and likely disappointed that their coach is leaving. Give the players a break.
It’s not that they’re banged up. It’s portal time. Mississippi didn’t drop out of the CFP….

Yes it’s from multiple that reached out to me and I’d trust not to be biased. There a few biased that also reached out but it was largely a more emotional version of the same. They all want the real story out, and mostly because they think the change is still needed and even if they aren’t here, they care about ISU.

The coaches were pissed because they had no warning from CMC until an hour before the team meeting and then had no time to determine what they wanted to do. Matt had ghosted them, Sukup, and many more the 3 days leading up to leaving. Some of the lower ones didn’t interact with the NIL stuff and liked Ames so were blindsided. Others were pissed because they didn’t get a chance to make a case for some continuity. Not all had to worry about the same NIL concerns as the head coach and very leading recruiters.

Sounds like Campbell burnt some bridges on the way out. I honestly think he had no clue how to handle the whole situation and probably in some way felt guilty so he just straight up isolated himself.
Gonna be awkward when the staff meet up again in PSU.

MC really going to enjoy all that freedom when he gets to Happy Valley.

Nah, I'm gonna blame those responsible and accountable, e.g., Pollard. Thanks!
Don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from. Maybe Campbell leaving will open the supposed Pandora's box on how you perceive Pollard handling the NIL situation. I think it's more complicated than people are making it out to be.

Better position than what?

It’s hard to miss the two super conferences vs everyone else stratification of the sport. It sucks, but I didn’t think people were denying the reality.

We’ve always said that there’s a small handful of schools that Campbell would leave for - based on where he’s from and where his family still lives. Based on what Jamie said, and I understand many won’t believe him, Matt told him that counteroffering wouldn’t matter. He was going for personal/family reasons. Based on the jobs he’s turned down, there’s no reason not to believe that.

So yes we’re a second tier program. Everyone not in the Big Ten or SEC is. That’s just reality.

I think people fail to understand how pissed the players are at JP for several ways he’s handled this, how many have already decided to leave, and how awful we’d look with our 3rd stringers starting. Whether you like it or not, we will not have 95% of our starters return, and that includes at QB.

JP simply needed to give up some control and CMC would be here another 10 years. Instead he basically pushes him out, cuts him off during the team meeting, doesn’t answer questions from the couple players that didn’t storm out, and before they could even swallow the news of CMC and the entire staff leaving, introduced the new guy while CMC was trying to speak.

JP built modern ISU athletics, JP could just as easily kill all momentum in the next 18 months. The clock is ticking on BF and TJ because they told JP the same exact needs as CMC. I can tell you TJ would rather be thinking retirement plans in Ames than if he’s going to stick around another 2-3 years without changes to how NIL is handled.
So you are saying we will only have one starter stick around.

Pollard is an absolute moron!! PSU paid ISU 2 million to buyout campbell. We’re paying Washington State 4 million to buy out this new guy. Now this 500k fine for blowing off the bowl. Were down 2.5 million in the exchange. However won’t think twice about raising ticket prices, general donations & NIL.. the fans agree to pay the price..

There’s nothing more Cyclones Fanatic than attacking the players, instead of the AD/coaches that put us in this impossible position.

I believe Matt had a buyout

Contract not broken.

Still hope he fails at Pedo State though
I really don't care if he succeeds in W/L column. I just want him to bring the "we're developing young men here, not trying to win football games" **** to the Pedos and see how that goes over. That is what I am going to enjoy hearing about.

To be fair, we should be saving some money on salaries. There's no way Rogers should sniff what we were paying Campbell.

Apparently add to it how much of this is on Pollard and how he handles the NIL situation...

I don’t really care that there’s no bowl. But players are getting paid and they can just decide to quit, which costs ISU $500k. Which of course will just mean the 1000th expectation of trying to squeeze more money out of the fans.
Exactly, he we need money, you need to give more money to pay players, to quit.

We fans are the ones footing this bill, and now fine.

Bowls are supposed to be the reward, now, no reward, oh and could you also pick up this bill for us too. I mean you already paid us to sit at home and quit on our team and fans.
