*** Official #10 IOWA STATE vs #1 Purdue Game(Day) Thread ***

I’ve had to endure weeks of texts from Pur Doos about how great Braden Smith is.

Highlights

Stats

I reply, “yeah but Tamin Lipsey”

Crickets.

I need better friends.

He’s not even the best point guard we are going to play THIS WEEK.

Just in the border of our low population state I’m rolling with Lipsey, Toure and Stirtz if I’m a hypothetical GM putting together a team.

Until Burton decided to have one of the best halves I've seen.
we went small ball instead of trying to match what Purdue does, we were not going to beat them at their own game. When we went small, Purdue couldn't stop us, especially Burton. But in the end Purdue had a 3 pointer bounce all over the hoop and back board and drop in. That basket hurt.

Lipsey and Smith both had 8 assists but the big difference was turnovers. Smith had 6 while Lipsey had none.

I watched Monte and Tyrese play a ton of games in ncaa and pros. I can’t remember a single game they passed as poorly as that kid, he’s a fraud if they are selling him as that level of all time passer/balln handler.

Tyrese makes far more spectacular passes than that without actually turning it over. That was a month or two of turnovers for Monte in one game.

Purdue should have been ranked more like 5-6 going into the game and they’re not even #1 in their subpar league, let alone the entire country.

So in a way we gave the money obsessed sports media a reality check.

If someone had watched AZ and Michigan and said “yeah Purdue is the best team” they were smoking crack.
I hadnt seen a lot of Purdue this year. I had seen a bit of a game here and there, and some highlights. What you are saying here is very much my same feeling coming into the game.

From what I saw before today, I didnt think they were as good as the hype. To me when I watched them, the were big, like really big. The couple times I watched some of their games they seemed huge compared to who they were playing. But they seemed like they were just not overall extremely good. They seemed maybe a step slower, maybe not as together as some.

Today seemed to confirm that a bit. They are really good. They are really big. But at times they appeared slow. At times they didnt feel as together. They at times seemed to get tired. Saw a lot of hands on hips, lot of out of trying to catch their breath at times.

This was a really great win, in a really great environment, against a really great team. Been a good year so far for our BB teams.

Thought this team would struggle more offensively after losing both Jones and Gilbert. Been able to avoid those long scoring droughts from some of the previous years under Otz.

It’s been a loooooooong time since we had two big guys making tough shots at a high % clip like Buchanan and Jefferson have been. Those bunnies and putbacks at the rim from Buchanan today were a revelation.

I think Purdue understandably decided to focus on JJ with the tear he’s been on and it’s why he struggled but the rest of our opponents may avoid that now given how Buchanan and Milan absolutely torched Purdue on their home court.

Toure and Lipsey can disrupt teams like few can. It’s like what Houston had for their run the past few years. It’s doesn’t even show up in the stats all the time.

I googled Iowa vs Purdue history at Mackey Arena. AI could only come up with two games. Purdues 40 point blowout over Iowa in the 1980s and today’s Iowa State win. That is kind of funny.

I don’t disagree but also don’t think there is any reason to downplay this win. From what we can tell right now there is probably Michigan and Arizona and then a bunch of of really good teams to round out the next 5-8.

A lot of this is Purdue starting out ranked number 1 and giving no one any real reason to vote them down.

They destroyed Texas Tech and won at Alabama. Then beat up on a bunch of nobodies like everyone else.

Not saying it’s right, but that’s always the way it works. #1 is yours until you lose it.

They looked really good for most of the first half. I think they’ll run through the big 10 minus Michigan and be a problem in March.

What we saw from Nelson is exactly what he is and what the team needs. He’s aggressive. He will get to the line and he’ll also turn the ball over. It’s not perfect but he’s a microwave in short spurts.

Toure would annoy the **** out of me if he played for another team and if the guy who spells him also plays like a maniac that has to be a lot to deal with.

I think they’re a top ten team, but I also think every Big Ten team gets overinflated automatically. Michigan has actually impressed. Is Indiana actually good? Did you watch the halftime show, it was PORNAGRAPHIC they way CBS kept saying “we” about the Big Ten teams. That type of ridiculous favoritism is the only reason they were above say Arizona. Even Duke might have a hard time keeping up in terms of twisted perception the way these guys are just falling all over themselves about Big Ten teams.

Duke is legit: I know people complain about the favoritism and I get it, but they’re downright good this year. Cam Boozer is a problem.

That said, I think we beat them head to head

Just watch things like that travel #2 had. He had a pass in mind, the passing lane suddenly had a Cyclone, and he stumbled into a travel.
We do that all day long.

It makes other backcourts uncomfortable. Which has a trickle down to the entire offense. Everything is a slog.

The trapping and quickly retreating really messes with smith.

Having Toure as a switch defender is really valuable too. He terrorizes guards, but when his quick hands switch onto a wing he can really go after them.

No individual stat for that but it’s a +1 in turnover margin for him.
