ISU Bowl Projection

It is kinda nice to now be an entitled fanbase. Bowls every year. NCAA tournaments every year. Not every program in the state has these things.
To me it is more about the opponent in Memphis. If the SEC could actually fill their allotment then maybe that bowl would be better. But having Memphis play in that bowl every year as the opponent for whoever has completely ruined that bowl. The location is not great, this is true, but if it was a great matchup it would help overcome that issue, at least somewhat.

While going to Memphis is not great, especially repeatedly, if we were going there to play a SEC or really any P4 team it would at least be a more meaningful game. But going to a meh location with meh weather that time of year, to play a G5 team, in their home stadium is pretty bad, for anyone. At that point you are taking most of the good points of going to a bowl, at least as a fan, out of the equation.

The biggest negative about the Rate Bowl to me (besides the hilarious name change) is that it's played in the Diamondbacks stadium now, instead of at ASU
This is true, playing football in baseball stadiums is really dumb. I dont know why this trend started but it needs to be done and over.

There is a reason they got rid of all the combo stadiums in Pro sports, even when the stadium was designed for both sports. They just dont work. It looks bad on TV, it terrible for fans in attendance, because the sight lines are all messed up with how they fit the field in them, the field is never great because of temporary grass etc, they just really suck.

Whats worse is most of the time they have a spectacular football facility just down the road, but want to have it in a baseball stadium cuz.... reasons.

I like Memphis and I wouldn’t be against playing there again against the SEC. But playing Memphis for the 3rd time in 8 years would be ******* annoying.

2017 was amazing because it was our first Campbell bowl. We had that amazing run in October and it was just a special time for the program.
if we HAVE to go back to the Liberty Bowl, it better be against an SEC team. I don't even want a Navy/North Texas type team. Give me Kentucky or Mizzou over an American team.

That said, we need a new destination other than Memphis or Orlando....I don't mind Orlando but we've been there three times in the last 6 years

the Pinstripe Bowl and the Fenway Bowl still exist and I don't really understand why.....sure, cool and historic baseball stadiums but for every reason you just listed, they are terrible for football viewing

The way it was set up in 2000, if I didn't know ahead of time I wouldn't have known I was playing on a baseball field.

A side note, my daughters graduation from ASU was held on the same field. It was pretty cool being there for that for the first time since I played the bowl game there.

Yeah, playing in a historic baseball stadium would be awesome.... for a baseball exhibition game.

Like if they want to have a college game in those stadiums, great host a college baseball game.

It also doesnt help that the weather almost always sucks too, especially for fans.

I do not know a single person that thinks these games in baseball stadiums are good, or a good idea. Yet for some reason they are still having them.

Seriously, why?

Honestly, from my memory that one does set up better for whatever reason. But the Pinstripe and Fenway bowls from what I can see are really bad. I didnt watch much of the Northwestern game at Wrigley to know how it set up.

But again in most/all of these locations there is a fantastic football stadium just down the road that would in most cases be nicer for a football game.

Fenway, Wrigley and Yankee Stadium don't fit football games

Agree it looked good and popped on TV (was there, but I watched the 2017 replay later.)

It's just not enough to keep excitement for it and there is real fatigue with this matchup. I wouldn't like to see this matchup in Liberty Bowl revisited for another decade. In 2035 or later, I'd probably be all for it again.
Notice how much Cyclone gear there is on the Memphis fan's side of the field. My guess is that the crowd was at least 60% ISU 40% Memphis. I have zoomed in pictures of the Memphis side that I took to document the crowd.

Context matters here. 2017 was exciting because of the highs that season (OU, TCU) and the feeling that we were back after some bad seasons. It was an exciting game with a thrilling end.

Our last outing in Memphis against them was a dud on the field. It would be lame to play them a 3rd time there in 9 years.

Liberty Bowl would be exciting with a P4 opponent. I think most folks would rather go to Phoenix or Texas.

Houston doesn't get much respect though so could be a deciding factor.
the only reason why Houston (the team) might get preferential treatment for a Texas based bowl game is because even though their fan base sucks, a bowl in Memphis or Orlando is definitely not going to select them. Can you imagine how many Houston fans would be at a bowl in Orlando? lol

my dad and I accidentally got tickets on the Memphis side so we were one of the sets of Cyclone fans in cardinal and gold on the opposite side......I still remember looking back at the other side and seeing how many Iowa State fans were there.....incredible

Can someone explain this thought process to me? We didn't play in our first bowl until 2000, and now we can be picky choosy?

@Nor'MidWester not sure if youre joking or not, but ive heard this same sentiment from others, and it confuses the hell out of me
1971 Sun vs. LSU
1972 Liberty vs. Georgia Tech
1977 Peach vs. N.C. State
1978 Hall of Fame Classic vs. Texas A*M-*

*-My first Iowa State game!
