DEFENSE!!!

TCU would have been better off just passing every single play. The pass defense was good today too but the run defense just totally destroyed them.
I thought we were good at both. It seemed like our defensive backs, whoever they are, played much tighter coverage. Less receivers wide open. It just seemed to me like we were more aggressive everywhere.
If it’s a revised scheme - I like it.

I was getting frustrated with the cushions we were giving their recievers. All the QB had to do is scan to see who was back pedaling from their already generous cushion and make an easy throw. They converted so many 3rd downs from this. I guess maybe the strategy is keep everything in front and do not give up a big play? Anyway, you can't argue with the result, 17 points. At the end of the day it is the amount scored that counts, not yards and first downs given up.

3 star young men. Physical limitations across the board, yet....
Pretty sure we could count our 4* players on one hand, during CMC & Co's tenure.
Ps. How many of our 4* have made significant contributions?
Not many.
Marcus Neal, Tyler Moore, Breece Hall, Hunter Dekkers, Allen Lazard (Rhoads carry-over)

Yeah, that’s about it unless you count Chase Sowell as a transfer. We’ve probably had just as many 4 stars burn out/transfer. I’m kinda surprised Big Citrus wasn’t a 4 star. The ratings system is kinda bogus anyway. Just getting an offer from a blue blood gets you an extra star. Development is still important and some schools are better at it than others.

Heacock is a wizard and those defensive players are just incredible how deep they can dig. I honestly don't know how ISU is even fielding a Big XII defense with that injury report. Just amazing to watch!
He seems to be at his best when their backs are against the wall and he's forced to get creative.

It worked yesterday because TCU would turn the ball over, what did we have 3 take aways? In the 4 game losing streak we were not getting those TO and the other team would score a TD.
There was one play yesterday 3rd and long, and we had 5 games at or behind the line to gain to get a first down. Totally crazy to be playing that far back by the corners, they can back pedal if they have to, but to just stand there, let them make the completion and come up and tackle them is not going to work against most teams, but it did yesterday.

While it sucks giving up the dink and dunks, the emphasis of our pass defense is to not get beat over the top and keep everything in front.

Now saying that, I believe if Jontez and Coop weren't still hurt those two would be playing more man to man than we've ever seen.

I was really disappointed because of that. I dream of a defense that has two lock down corners.

Our defensive backfield is completely decimated by injuries. Probably need to add a few more depth pieces in the portal this off season.
DBs have still been fine and assuming everyone comes back next year I don't see it as being near as important as upping the LB group and figuring out how to replace Orange.

Tackling from just past the line of scrimmage has been terrible.

I’m not sure how Marcus Neal has stayed healthy given the insane amount of physicality he plays with. He’s got my vote for team MVP.
Sounds like he has actually been playing hurt, which makes it even more impressive.

The D has three turnovers and at least one stop on 4th down versus ASU. The O and ST teams didn't hold up their end of complimentary football. The D looks worse, when they are being put in tough spots each game.

When you have to depend on the opposing QB to have a poor game to play well you are struggling on defense. How did the defense do against Colorado, Cincinnati and BYU, they got ate alive. When you get zero pressure on the QB play after play and allow him all the time in the pocket to make a throw, you are going to struggle. What is our defense doing to speed up the QB and force him into mistake, nothing that I can see. We in the bottom of the league in sacks and the take aways have been from a couple of games, ASU and TCU, the rest of the game we are averaging about one take away a game on defense, that is not enough in todays modern game.

Iowa State's scoring defense rank = 38
Iowa State's scoring offense rank = 72

One of those seems better than the other.
