Jontez Williams out for the year

Exactly. The team who is winning subs out starters when the losing team gives up and subs out theirs. Arizona was still playing their starters.

It's the same thing with our BB team, we don't sub out until the team we are beating gives up and starts subbing.
Was looking forward to seeing your perspective on this.

He's gotten better but it doesn't matter how good you are if you're getting hit in the backfield.
Watch the butts of the lineman. He should be running between two backsides even if the hole is small. More than not if it is not a huge hole he bounces it for either 10 or -2. Probably 1/2 to 3/4 of the time he does not hit the hole he is supposed to. It's like when Maverick wouldn't engage. Talent doesn't matter if you don't do what you're supposed to.

I find the question of why it seems like—in recent seasons—half the roster is dinged up at all times more interesting than whether or not Williams should’ve been playing when he got hurt. And yes, I’m aware that we don’t follow injury news about bench guys on other teams, but how many P4 teams are currently hoping they can get some fourth stringers healthy?…
Well, for one thing, Coffey isn’t a fourth stringer. He was the fourth corner last season, and the third or fourth option this year.

Also, hoping to have guys back to give us a three deep…is that really so unusual?

I mean, I know it is for ISU. But three deep is our new normal.

To answer your initial question, there are more injuries nowadays than there were years ago, because players are so much bigger, stronger and faster than they used to be.

At one point, Vikings OG Ed White was called the strongest player in the NFL because he benched 400 lbs. Now, some high school kids do that.

Hell, some HS kids ARE 400 lbs...

Fair enough, I was genuinely curious. I do think Iowa State’s safeties have an insane injury history since the 3-3-5 was implemented, that can’t be chalked up to “The game has changed,” but this thread is obviously about a CB

Not really an insane history. And I can answer that for you quickly.

The problem is that Heacock’s version channels the tackles to the Star, or middle safety.

Thus the shoulder injuries to Eisworth and Freyler, though Greg switched positions his last year.

Better talent, depth and shutting offenses sooner should help alleviate that—though Neal doesn’t seem to have any oroblems so far.

Coffey is gonna be a good one, just doesn't have much playing experience yet.

Same with Ngoyi. Lots of potential, but only been at corner a short time and not much game experience.

Someone mentioned moving Sama to corner. Hahaha! He hasn't played any corner in college, he's not gonna magically be great at it right away.

We will be hurting at corner the rest of the year, but getting guys like Coffey, Ngoyi, Taylor etc will be huge for the next few years. I wonder how LaMarcus Hicks is doing in practice.

If I were to guess, it would be KCC they slide to help at corner, if need be. Though he’s hardly the only one who could do so.

I played line. Father was a coach. I understand how it works. What I'm saying is he is getting hit in the backfield too often to claim he isn't reading the hole. Besides in a zone scheme he's picking the hole. It's not usually a set position like in power blocking.

I agree with that, but also, you have guys with 3 and 4 star athleticism, playing ALL-OUT in order to get 5 star level of play. When you are pushing your body like that, things break.

If you drove your car like that, you'd need a new transmission pretty often too.

Three and four star ranking does not mean three and four star athleticism.

Just look at Porter. Iirc, he was barely three star—but that sure as hell was five star athleticism.

Part of the reason Coop was hurt early on was that he was actually plsying as a freshman at 165 lbs. CMC mentioned that this spring. Athleticism, but not the bulk or muscle mass.

That’s why it’s good that with better depth, Mason Ellens—who is practically a carbon copy—will get to redshirt.

And our safeties are much bigger now than they used to be.

Frequently, star ratings are not indicative of player ability. FWIW, Tez was a 2 star if i remember correctly.

Also, the whole Omaha situation

I just read the short ESPN blurb on the news and saw that Jontez AND Jeremiah are out for rest of season. I have all the sympathy in the world for, after watching Cam Rising and other pivotal players go out year after from injuries. I swear I dont remember the rash of injuries like this back in the 90s and 00s. Sigh.. So much for better designed equipment.

Hang in there, and good luck on rest of season.

The silver lining here isn’t just that youngsters like Q, Beni and Coffey will be getting reps, but that these injured guys will also likely be back—when that wasn’t the case.

Even Jontez had a chance to go pro after this season.

Corner will be loaded in ‘26.

Safety will be loaded in ‘26.

Linebacker will be loaded in ‘26.

And I’m not worried about the DL, even without Big Citrus or Tamatoa. There are enough guys coming back for it to be fine—especially with everywhere else on D being rock solid.

You're right next year could be a special year, but man we will be graduating an insane amount of talent in '27. 2028 could start out rough.
