Cracks in the B1G?

Not sure how much more SIDs really know about football than AP voters. Lol.

Not saying you're wrong on your facts. Just saying, Michigan was the AP national champion that year and that was the recognized one. Just the truth.
Recognized by who? Last I checked Nebby claims the natty that year.

The legitimacy of national titles in those days was directly proportional to whether your team was selected as a champion. Just look at what it takes for A&M or Auburn to claim a natty. If some hometown newspaper says you won a title, well that goes in the media guide.

When I worked in the athletic department for the SID, the AP voters called the assistant SID for their input. That was crazy.

Good point but there's no denying AP was the one recognized in college football as the most legitimate. And I'm saying this as a fan of an Iowa program that tries laying claim to a few of those non-AP natties, to which I don't agree.

Yes, there is denying it big time. The only time the AP was the recognized as the most legit was 1936-49. After that, it shared that role with UPI. What screwed Michigan was the Rose Bowl, which didn’t allow at large bids in the 1990s. It is absolutely untrue that AP was recognized as the most legitimate after 1949.

How old are you?

This sounds like an argument that someone who wasn't alive/following sports in 1997 would make. The AP was the gold standard prior to the BCS.

I was in my 30s and had previously worked for AP. During that time, UPI and AP were both recognized. The 1997 poll damaged AP’s credibility.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but even UCF has decided to recognize a "national championship" in 2017 by the Colley Matrix. The NCAA actually recognized UCF with a "national championship" as well that year.
So yes, the NCAA can recognize multiple national champions even in the CFP era

Since this became a thread about being #1 in the AP poll to claim a national title…

The Big Ten was historically absolute dog $hit at getting an AP national title compared to Big 8 and Big 12. I just looked it up and not even worth writing. It’s “practically none” for big ten to “a boatload” for b12 and b8.

The Rose Bowl really prevented the Big 10 from winning national titles.

Iowa also gets to claim conference titles with teams they never had to play because ties. We all got to see what happened when Iowa actually had to play the top teams for said championship.

If ISU was able to claim that we would have had a couple conference championships in the past several years. But we had to have a full round robin then get a rematch in the CCG.

I think most agree the old way of voting a National Champion was flawed as much as letting people vote who gets in to the playoff and who gets a bye is today.

I get that the AP was the go to for most when it came to the voting, but the fact is 1. they system was and is extremely flawed full of humans that are biased and at times know little about the subject voting on. And 2. that Nebraska's final game was far more impressive of a win and should have propelled them to #1 unanimously that year.

From 1960 up to the bowl alliance, there were only two split votes, 1978 and 1990.

I mean I would give them the G5 national championship that year. But no not the FBS championship.....

Which is why the G5 needs to have their own thing, but in the current system it wont happen.
