Fan Boundaries with Student Athletes

When I was first married, we lived in a western suburb of Chicago named Elmhurst and many Chicago Blackhawk players lived there as well. We would often see a young Jeremy Roenick and his defenseman roommate at a Greek breakfast restaurant named the Rainbow, which did brisk business. I never saw anyone approach Roenick, which is probably why he frequented the place - he could eat without being bothered.

Several months ago, a retirement age male board member related a story where he entered a small Ames bar to meet friends, saw a high profile female basketball player sitting alone at a table and approached her, "conversing for several minutes". He said she sat alone the entire time she was there, which he thought was "weird". The player was one of our first "unexpected" transfer portal losses.

I'm firmly in the camp that formal boundaries should be in place between fans and student athletes, especially female student athletes. An adult male wouldn't walk into a small towny bar, see an anonymous twenty year-old girl sitting alone at a table, walk up and engage her in conversation. I feel strongly the same should hold true for an ISU WBB player - she was sitting alone by choice - leave her alone. I said as much in the thread and was surprised by the number of people who felt otherwise.

It's a slow time of the ISU athletic year and I'm always interested in the opinions of others. I'm not talking about college-aged or young adults, rather mature adults ages 40 & over. Would you approach a female athlete sitting alone in a bar minding their own business? When is it permissible to approach a female student athlete in public? When is it permissible to approach any ISU student athlete in public?

Allegiant vouchers available $400

I have $400 in Allegiant Air vouchers (two $200 vouchers) that have to be used by 7/12. They’re not directly transferable so I’d send them with the code and email address that needs to be used during the booking. I’m not too concerned with getting a lot for them, I would mainly like to see them get used. DM if interested and we can discuss details.

DAILY CLONE: Arnold Barnes commits, Otzelberger goes in-depth on transfers (May 19, 2026)

Iowa State football lands Tulane running back Arnold Barnes III in the transfer portal. What does it mean for the room? T.J. Otzelberger goes in-depth on the incoming transfers with what they bring to the table. Plus, he argues why Joshua Jefferson and Milan Momcilovic should be first round picks. Jake Brend has it all in the Northwest Bank Studios, presented by Whiskey River. Login to view embedded media

Tulane RB Arnold Barnes III commits to Iowa State

Jimmy Rogers is getting reinforcements on the offensive side of the ball with the the commitment of Tulane transfer running back Arnold Barnes III, per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

In three seasons at Tulane, The 5-foot-10, 216 pound back ran for 757 yards and scored seven touchdowns. As a junior in 2025, Barnes ran for 217 yards as a primarily a short-yardage back.

CONTEST: Post your guess here to win a free Fanatic book by Chris Williams - WINNER CHOSEN

Been meaning to do this for quite some time.

I wanted to celebrate our own @ChrisMWilliams and his Fanatic: Stories from 20 years inside Iowa State book with Rob Gray.

I write the occasional story and I've found the blank page eventually pushes every writer into madness. It's a lot of pressure. I'm always amazed when people like Chris overcome that to put out an actual book.

In appreciation, I will be giving away THREE copies of his book.

Since I live in the distant badlands, local connector and overall mensch @Cycsk made an incredibly kind offer to help me obtain and ship them out.

There will be three separate contests and I'll space them out without overlap:

1.) Guess the score of an upcoming NBA game, closest wins.
2.) Solve an incomprehensible puzzle (that I create), first solution wins.
3.) PREMIUM ONLY: Solve another incomprehensible puzzle, first solution wins.

HOW DO YOU WIN THIS CONTEST?

In honor of the NBA playoffs, post in this thread your guess of the winner and final score of this specific game:

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER vs. SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Game 3 @ San Antonio
Friday, May 22 @ 8:30 PM eastern

You must make (or edit) your final guess in this thread before Game 3 tips off. One guess per account. No new accounts allowed. Correct winner with closest score guess wins the book.

To be safe, I suggest you post your initial guess now, so you give yourself a chance in case you get busy later this week and forget. Can also keep tabs on the first two games and edit your initial guess if you feel like anything has changed, eg: Wemby abducted by actual aliens.

LMK if I should add or change anything. Good luck!

"Variables" exist for Joshua Jefferson and Milan Momcilovic to both be first-round NBA Draft picks

Twister Sister Summary - a small change

I've made the decision to make the summaries available only from the wordpress site. I will no longer be posting them here. Please note...as it always has been...there will never be a cost involved. If you want to receive an email notice of a new posting just subscribe (found on the main page). When I post it just auto generates an email to those that want to read it. I'll keep content coming (although summer is always slow) just as I always have.

I've been writing the Twister Sister Summary for well over twenty years. That's a lot of writing and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I also appreciate any commentary it generates. There is a spot on each summary where you can leave comments if you want. I always enjoy reading responses and friendly dialogue.

Thanks to all of you who have read and commented on here and on the "other" site where it first started.

Obsession (new movie)

Went and saw the new horror movie Obsession this weekend. Pretty unheard of A- score from audience polls...for a horror movie that is very rare.

On its surface, the movie delivers great gory thrills, but the director and writer have actually crafted a devastating takedown of modern male entitlement and the toxic "Nice Guy" complex. While the film plays with the "crazy girlfriend" trope, the real monster isn't the girl at all.

As a social commentary, the film offers a fascinating, uncomfortable look at modern dating and the illusion of consent. It’s a brilliant horror film because the threat isn't a masked killer, it's the terrifyingly familiar face of a man who believes he is owed a woman’s heart. One of the best horror movies in a while and the two main characters I've never heard of but they are incredible and will both be stars.

Marshals

The only thing worse than Gary Grimes wooden, understated acting in this new series is the insufferable Logan Marshal-Green and his weak as water melodrama each week that does nothing to further the plot. I get so tired of his stoic suffering and grating personality as the boss of this elite unit. Oh, and speaking of inability to act, let's hear it for Tatanka Means and his quiet introspection that can become explosive over-reacting at the drop of a hat. Convince me I'm wrong.

Williams & Blum: Why Iowa State football’s plan makes sense

Chris Williams & Brent Blum dive deeper into the creation of Iowa State football’s new program under Jimmy Rogers and the construction of its roster. Williams makes the point that it’s probably best for everybody if national expectations are incredibly low this season. The guys take a handful of mailbag questions about the roster and more, all courtesy of Mechdyne.
