WVU transfer Tykee Smith

So he can’t force him to sit a year?
No, the only power he has right now is that he is trying to delay the signing of the release and he says he is "negotiating" with Gary Patterson. But he has no negotiating power because it has to be signed eventually and there is nothing he can do to stop it. I would love to hear what Patterson is thinking about this.

No. For starters it's a free transfer year. No way to slice it, OU is out of bounds on this one.

If OU can't stop the transfer, what is the issue with the Morris? The article states that OU hasn't released him yet. Does that means they can hold him until the end of the semester? Not familiar with what is actually going on I guess.

I hope gary hands him a sweaty towel and says "we good?"

I don't believe teams can block where the transfers go nowadays, since the start of the transfer portal.

You can in conference...OU quarterback Chandler Morris transferred to TCU in January. Lincoln Riley has blocked him from playing this year. (much controversy google and there are ton of stories). He can still be on scholarship, but unless Riley releases him, he can't play this year.

This is correct. The NCAA in 2019 started the transfer portal rules and in those rules prohibited schools from blocking where a transfer student could go.

NCAA Transfer Portal Rules from the NCAA

Quote from the NCAA Transfer Portal Rules Q&A:

"Can coaches dictate where a student-athlete can transfer?

Coaches can’t tell student-athletes when or where they can transfer. Student-athletes can transfer at any time if they believe attending a different school is in their best interest."

You are missing the part where they can transfer, and they can be on scholarship at the new school, but they can be blocked from playing in their first year if they are not released. There is speculation that NCAA may change this, but for now it is the rule.

That said, it is risky because it can be used against you in recruiting. "You know if you go there, and you decide to transfer Riley doesn't grant releases..." OU has the recruiting pull to get away with that with minimal risk, but most schools would not want to be known as that on the recruiting trail. I very much doubt West Virginia would block him.

Thankfully for us though, if he does decide to come to ISU and WV blocks him for his first year, we have Eisworth, Isheem, and Amos (not to mention Chambers and other young guys on the team who played last year). So if he does need to sit out a year, he hasn't used his redshirt yet, and we'll still be in good hands without him playing immediately.

Him, Isheem and Eisworth on the same team... I would feel bad for any player trying to catch a ball coming across the middle.

I've lost track of how this all works-- is it guaranteed he'd be immediately eligible?

From my understanding right now, yes. But someone with more knowledge on all of this would know more than I would.

He would be a take for us - although not a position of need on the depth chart.

I was hoping to get a grad transfer at DT but I suppose we have some good young guns developing there: Singleton, Isiah Lee seems capable already and incoming Howard.

My biggest question on the team this year is who will be the robin to Xavier Hutchinson's batman? We need a second receiver to emerge and that was lacking last year. Somewhat of a nightmare year for Tarique Milton

If we would pick him up, would a current understudy be thinking about transfer portal themselves
