WTF Cowherd?

And just now he said Deion will never be as good a coach as Matt Campbell, among others. All is right with the world again.
Those two aren't the same. It's not apples to apples. That comparison is apples to cardboard box.

I’m mostly offended for our recruits. Not as an ISU fan. He is saying that the value/ranking of a recruits is based on what school they go to, and not what their potential is. If we went back and re-recruited classes from years ago, Tamin and Rocco would be highly sought after recruits.

The thing is, TJ isn’t looking for the best players. He’s looking for the right ones.

Cowherd always gets caught up on the potential. He loves measurables and hardly ever looks at intangibles in his rants.

He’s a front runner who loves brands more than actual good teams, because it’s good for his business, I wouldn’t take too much stock into his takes.

I mean…..so far historically (outside of Omaha I guess) is he wrong? He probably just thought of the first non blue blood school off the top of his head.

We. Don’t. Have. To. Take. Offense. To. Everything.

One and done freshman haven't really been the secret sauce to NCAA titles. Kentucky had that run of a few years where they made it work...otherwise those players have been the sprinkles/frosting on the cupcake.

If the money stays the way it is getting players from Europe is going to become huge fast. If Josh Dix is worth a 900K one year contract you could get insane value in Europe and the young European pros would get a serious pay increase.

Exactly. When he talks about the best high school players, he's referring to the top 5 guys out of high school, not the Milans and Tamins of the world. We won't pay for the top 5 guys, so of course they won't come here. It's not a big deal, and it's not an insult.

I know a local kid who is projected to be a top 100 recruit by the time his senior season rolls around (going into his jr. year now). He's had calls from some of the top AAU programs in the nation. All of them have said that Iowa State & Iowa are pretty much done recruiting kids out of high school. They have decided to focus almost primarily on the transfer portal.

I mean I don't see the Cyclones pulling a Zion or Flagg type of recruit if that's what he's insinuating. But I'd disagree that ISU won't get top 10/ top 5 positional players in annual classes.
… I’d add that while we love a one-and-done superstar like that, it might even be more beneficial to our program long term to snag the top 50-type guys we’ve been landing that stay here 4 years like a Niang or Lipsey. Those guys are foundational and lead to four year runs of success and successive NCAA tourneys with the chance at Final Four runs. That’s probably more impactful for a program like ours than a one year Freshman.

Anyway, I’m not bothered by Cowherd’s comment that I take to mean we can’t land the elite Top 5 type draft pick.

Agree. We are probably not going to pay whatever ridiculous amount of money that BYU has spent to get a future lottery pick the last two years.

I can't speak to that other school, but this is objectively false with regard to our program. Unless "pretty much done" means something different than face value.

Iowa State is always going to recruit HS at some level. To be blunt, we cannot afford to have 100% portal talent. Our path to success is going to be hitting on Top 100 HS kids and paying to keep them here, and sprinkle in portal targets to fill in gaps.

I don't buy that. Neither Iowa or Iowa State can financially afford to just rely on the portal.

We’re still recruiting high school players. We do not have the money to simply recruit the transfer portal every season. It’s true for some schools, not for Iowa State and doubtful for Iowa.

That’s called negative recruiting. Nearly every school in the nation talks down about other teams with falsehoods to try and prop themselves up. Recruits need to be savvy when it comes to the message coaches are saying directly to them.

Cowherd also said, after UNC’s first drive, that Chapel Bill was the second greatest college coach he has seen.

I know. Still pisses me off though. Top 25 programs in both football and basketball should get you out of his regular rotation of punching bags.
How many times did he throw punches at Russell Westbrook in today's show? He'll throw shade at Russ every day of the year just for the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks of it. His all-time personal vendetta.

He's admitted on air he's paid to have hot takes for 3 hours a day to drive ratings and clicks. I'll at least give him credit for acknowledging what he says is not necessarily his opinion, it is what earns his show revenue.

Skip Bayliss and others still act like they aren't trolling for clicks.
Does he think our University generates lots of clicks? Go pick on Penn State or TAM if you're looking for that. I don't think he's necessarily wrong about us not getting the TOP recruits. $$$ prevents us from doing that...but what TJ is outstanding at is finding the right pieces that fir the program.Winning lots of games attracts lots of able recruits. Don't let Cowherd bug ya..
better hills to die on than that.
