Look at what he has done with the Raptors. He has statistics that are very similar to what Fred has done with the Clones. He is on the short list for Steve Kerr as assistant on the rumor circuit.Must be Otz or a splash hire. Nurse is neither.

No thanks. Just wondering why it is imperative that all these Head Coaching suggestions need to keep Otzelberger in order to justify them getting the job. That absolutely makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure I saw that TJ is considered one of the top 5 recruiters in the Nation. Sorry, but can't find the link again. Recruiting is everything in college BB. I know I wouldn't want to deal with pampered 18 year olds, let alone their parents, uncles, aunts, etc.
TJ "has it", and the recruits love him. It is imperative that we keep someone like this on the staff. Wasn't this Fred's first request when he initially took the ISU job; that TJ stayed on the staff and received a nice raise in return?....
All great reasons, but he'd be using ISU as a stepping stone into the NBA.
The problem with Nurse is that he really doesn't move the barometer any more than TJ but has more question marks.
He moves jobs more than college kids change their underwear, he hasn't been a lead recruiter, he has been a candidate for a million college openings and never gotten the offer, he's destined for the NBA (though I think a lifer as an assistant), and he wouldn't have the support of a large percentage of the donor-base.
More question marks? He wouldn't have the one big question mark that Otz has...Can he run a team and manage a game from the HC chair. Anyone can hire a recruiter.

Obviously they can't. You act like recruiting is simple. Biggest challenge in the game today. Pretty much everyone knows the X's and O's or can find a lifer to help them with that. Recruiting is the tough part.
You have everything Bass Ackwards.

Sounds like the corporate world. The reason I ask is that so many voice their opposition to having Otz as Head Coach........and then they insist that he must be retained as an assistant. That really makes no sense.
So the logic is that because Otz is an excellent recruiter he should always remain a recruiter and not be able to become Head Coach. Meanwhile guys who are not good at recruiting are allowed to become Head Coaches........and Otz is supposed to get them the recruits to be successful.......which may actually overshadow the fact that they may not be that great of coaches......but just had good recruiters like Otz getting them the players to win.
I'm confused why there's not more love for Nick Nurse. He fits about every criteria:
1. Would run an NBA offense
2. Iowa ties
3. NBA connections
4. Was actually an ISU assistant for a few weeks
5. Relationship with Grayer and Otz
6. Successful HC in the D-League
Seems like a no-brainer to me if he can keep Otz as associate HC.
Because JP decided on otz. It's his call and he made it long ever ago.
Recruiting IS simple. Evaluation and building a team where the pieces fit well together is hard. I think that YOU are the one who has things wrong. The HC is very rarely your main recruiter and the assistants very rarely are the ones calling plays during games.
I guess I'd rather have an X&O guy who can hire a recruiter than a recruiter who hires an X&O guy.

Why is that?Fine, he can be a pro assistant. HC at ISU no way in hell.
If recruiting was simple, building a successful program would be easy.
Recruiting is tough. It takes passion for recruiting, developing relationships with HS, prep, Juco coaches. It also takes a guy who can relate to young kids.
For a school like ISU that resides in a state with few Big12 quality HS players recruiting is even a bigger deal. It takes 2-3 strong recruiters to build a strong program and the head coach really should be one of them. I also feel it is too easy to label coaches as recruiters or X&O guys. At ISU's level that have to be solid at both.
I think when you start talking about characteristics needed to be a great head coach we are talking about intangibles like leadership, knowing how to relate to players, etc. Those were qualities Fred Hoiberg had in spades. I don't think people would ever say he was great at X&Os or recruiting.
