Why not Nurse?

I'm confused why there's not more love for Nick Nurse. He fits about every criteria:

1. Would run an NBA offense
2. Iowa ties
3. NBA connections
4. Was actually an ISU assistant for a few weeks
5. Relationship with Grayer and Otz
6. Successful HC in the D-League

Seems like a no-brainer to me if he can keep Otz as associate HC.

Honestly? 2, 3, 4 and 5 to me have zero weight and are non factors. 6 is the best trait at best and it's weak at most. Just nothing in that resume tells me he's qualified to coach a Top 10 team.

Well if we come out as preseason #9 we won't be a top 10 team for long. And even if we do manage to stay in the Top 10 all year I doubt it carries over to 2016/17.

The problem with Nurse is that he really doesn't move the barometer any more than TJ but has more question marks.

He moves jobs more than college kids change their underwear, he hasn't been a lead recruiter, he has been a candidate for a million college openings and never gotten the offer, he's destined for the NBA (though I think a lifer as an assistant), and he wouldn't have the support of a large percentage of the donor-base.

Interesting metaphor...are college kids known for frequently changing their underwear these days?

Obviously they can't. You act like recruiting is simple. Biggest challenge in the game today. Pretty much everyone knows the X's and O's or can find a lifer to help them with that. Recruiting is the tough part.

You have everything Bass Ackwards.

Agreed. Recruiting is at least as important as coaching experience. It is generally easier for a great recruiter to hire someone to help with the coaching than for a great coach to hire someone that is a great recruiter.

I don't get it. I rarely changed clothes in college. I change much more now. I would have said "He moves jobs more than a 40-something engineer changes their underwear". But that's just me.

Recruiting IS simple. Evaluation and building a team where the pieces fit well together is hard. I think that YOU are the one who has things wrong. The HC is very rarely your main recruiter and the assistants very rarely are the ones calling plays during games.

I guess I'd rather have an X&O guy who can hire a recruiter than a recruiter who hires an X&O guy.

It's easier for better players to overcome a bad coach than it is for a good coach to overcome bad players. Recruiting is not simple at ISU. You're delusional to think it is. There's a reason Fred was unable to pull in a 5* McDAA.

Yeah, exactly...college was when I least frequently changed clothes. I mean, I still changed my underwear a lot more than the average person changes jobs (hopefully?), but it's not like I was well known for it or anything.

I think GMac vs Fred disproves your post. See what Fred did with GMac's players. And GMac had like 100 NBA draft picks over his tenure at ISU, who packed up and left :twitcy:

Recruiting 5* McDAA is a TOTALLY different ballgame. When you get to that level, you're up against the blue bloods and also up against under the table money. Those kids could obviously fit into any system and many are 1 and dones or 2 and dones. What I'm talking about is what's left. All I'm saying is that finding a guy who can speak to young BB players (whether they're inner city or suburb) and convince them to visit your campus, knows all the AAU coaches, is willing to attend all of the tournaments...that's easy. What's hard is knowing that a guy like Niang is not only way underated, but also that you could build your offense around his skill set. What's hard is seeing Monte Morris and realizing that he's not just another Michigan player, he's going to be a multi-year starter for you. That's not a recruiter, that's a HC who can evaluate talent and who has a plan of how that talent will fit in your team. It takes a recruiter to bring those guys into the fold, but that's the easy part IMO. Hard part is realizing the talent in the first place, deciding to go after it and putting together the puzzle pieces to build a team.

Well, 2. (Iowa ties) and 4. (former ISU assistant) tell me that he would have no problem moving back to Iowa and may just stay awhile. 5. (relationship with Grayer and Otz) tells me that he may be able to sway those two to be on his staff. And 3. (NBA connections) would help with recruiting. That's why those things don't carry zero weight with me.

He has plenty on his resume (especially a D-League championship) that tells me he can coach a top 10 team. D-League is known for roster turnover where you get a new group of players every year and have to make the best of it. That's exactly what he'd run into in Ames. And his NBA style would fit exactly with what the current team is built for. What isn't on his resume is how he would recruit players to contend after this year. My opinion is that outside of Hornacek, Nurse would be the one candidate (of those mentioned so far) that would have a chance to go really far with next year's team. After that I don't know. I'd just prefer to go all in on next year and see where that takes us.

Doesn't matter anyway, it sure looks like he's not going to get a shot. Oh well. I'll probably join #teamotz

All great reasons, but he'd be using ISU as a stepping stone into the NBA.

And that would be outstanding if we were to get another coach who has enough success here to move to the NBA

Agree. But, we also don't know how good of an X&O guy TJ is. Winnng a couple D-league championships is nothing to sneeze at, and has been given credit for an up-tempo running offense at Toronto.

Also, and I understand it's not happening, but is a guy who wins everywhere he goes such a bad option? He might leave? Ya well so will anybody else that succeeds here. I'm not saying hire him but why not at least look. I know, Jeremy poopooed him so it's its over but it makes some sense. Stupid posts are stupids posts, not my first. I'm out unless you want to yell or talk about new posters. #TeamCyclone15-16

I watched some D League games when Royce White was playing and it appeared to me that Michael Nurse was a hot head. So un Fred like he even earned at least one ejection in the few games I watched.

That's a deal-breaker.
No Nurse-O-Meters.
