Why do I hate the Hawks so much?

There is not much to like.

I got really tired of being lectured that I should cheer for CC. I'll cheer for who I like and it certainly won't be a Hawkeye. I don't remember anyone out east cheering for Troy Davis.
Watched Soundoff last night. 30 minute show a little over 20 minutes of content. Quite a bit happened Sunday afternoon and evening but Keith Murphy did 2 separate stories for about 5 minutes on Caitlyn Clark
Had to opine on why she wasn't on the 2024 Olympic team.

Murph still overly excited over CC, eh?

I read this and was not the least bit surprised. Stopped watching SoundOff ages ago.

SoundOff was mostly a mouthpiece for the EIU Athletic Department ~20 years ago, doubt it's any different or better now.

I doubt he's a legit Tavern Hawk, I think as a state-level media guy he's just catering to the largest audience, which is EIU fans, but Murphy certainly gives off a Tavern Hawk vibe, Fales even more so.

Very typical EIU to wax poetically about a former great who hasn't played on the team in two years when there's major current events in IA sports to cover.

Something unmentioned so far in this thread that grinds my gears about EIU fans is that when they achieve some success, many of their fans act all haughty about it, like "Ah yes heh as you can see the Hawks have claimed their rightful place atop [sport in question]" rather than just being pleased with the team's success like us ISU fans. Being ranked AP #1 for a bit in football 30+ years ago really went to their heads.

Whenever we travel to both coasts or offshore, we always expect to encounter some sad mid age or older male wearing Hawkeye apparel. Never fails amazingly and it’s always embarrassing when it can be in a nice restaurant or shoreline high dollar establishment. Where everyone else is hatless and is dressed appropriately. Their fans are so bad even the Husker fans have dropped down the list. I’m enjoying the new rivalry between Nebbie and the Hawks, they are Nebbie’s new hated rivalry since they don’t play Oklahoma & Texas. Here in western Iowa it’s fun to watch this happen. I hope Fred demolishes them.

Such a different environment back in the 80's in the Jim Criner football era when I was at ISU ... we were basically never on TV for any sports that I can remember, but it seemed like every Iowa game was on. All of the local news sports broadcasts were all about Iowa. This bred a whole generation of Hawkeye bandwagon jumpers that never went to school there. Every year, Iowa would come in and pound us mercilessly in football and the stands would just be full of annoying Hawkeye fans. It was real easy to grow to hate them.
The 80s was the low point in the program for ISU and the series in general. Criner ran the program into the ground, basically stopped recruiting instate kids that the Squawks wanted, and they were pounding us on the field. Fry made a living hammering, ISU, Wisconsin and Northwestern, just killing them year after year.
Once Mac took over and he finally ended the streak, EIU fans started saying "it took a former Iowa coach for the winning streak to stop." Their fan base has a unique way of rubbing salt in the wounds of ISU while staying above it all when they commit infractions.

When I lived out of state I really didn't care at all if Iowa won or lost. I pretty much never interacted with any fans, and this was when SM didn't really exist beyond some message boards. I had some friends that were Hawk fans still living in Iowa, but they were not anti-ISU or annoying, and I didn't see them that much.

Moving back to the state made me absolutely wish they would lose every game with some VERY rare occasions. Though off the top of my head I can't think of what those exceptions are.

It's all about proximity to their fans.

I had a few unclean thoughts of "Maybe I want Iowa to win, Todd Golden sucks" last night, don't feel good about it.

I'll just say it: I selfishly hate that Iowa won yesterday because it basically stole our thunder with local media coverage. We played a great game and the attention was on us. No one expected Iowa to beat Florida and now that they have it's not only a big story because 9 beat 1 seed but because Iowa basketball has sucked for so long that it took McCollum just 1 year to do something no coach has done there since Dr Tom did in 1999.

Waiting to see if/who the local stations send to cover both teams in the Sweet 16 as I know lately seems like the local TV stations can't get approved to send someone to cover things like bowl games or NCAA tournaments. Would piss me off though if they their "B team" to cover use over Iowa even with ISU playing closer in Chicago. We've had the better season and I can only imagine how much some of the local media is going to jerk off to Iowa winning this game now and ISU becomes the lesser talking point.

I am definitely rooting for Fred to beat them. I view Nebraska basketball a little differently than their football as their basketball has sucked for so long while their FB fans still are living in the glory days of the 90's. I can stomach rooting for Fred when their program has never won anything meaningful up until this point.
We NEED to win on Friday because if we don't we won't hear the end of it, since either the ****** ass Hawks or the program that has sucked for so long until they got our former coach (that didn't make it past the sweet 16 with us) will go farther than us.

I'm 65 years old and I'm just trying to figure out why I hate the Hawks so much. I'm even rooting for the Cornhuskers over them!
What are some of your reasons you hate the Hawks so much?
Simple answer for someone our age. Hayden Fry.

I grew up in eastern Iowa in the 80s and 90s. I was a Hawk fan, and almost everyone I knew was too. I wasn't a Cyclone fan until attending Iowa State in the mid-nineties. My wife and I moved to Iowa City in 2000. I was a fan of both schools, and I thought it was funny how the Iowa State fans we knew who lived in Iowa City just hated Iowa. It didn't take me long to understand. For me, it's not that Iowa fans are especially obnoxious. I find that all schools have obnoxious fans. "Hate" between rivals is what makes it fun. Not real hate - our Iowa fan friends are good people. It's more the condescension toward ISU that's irksome - the smirk and the eye roll. What's fun is that this has pretty much gone away with younger fans. The acting as though they don't give ISU a thought or consider them a rival is mostly with older fans. Anyway, we love living in Iowa City. But our family of five is 100% Cyclone.

I didn't hate them until their Kirkwood drop out fans started making fun of me for going to a "community college" like ISU to get my engineering degree.

Even today, most Iowa grads I associate with are reasonable to talk sports. But the Wartburg grad is so ******* miserable.
