This is the first year we've got to have my wife's firm do our taxes since she was offered ownership. No lie, it's pretty intimidating and sweet christ we pay a lot.

20 years as a CPA, I don't do my own return. This is always a little embarrassing.

Partner in 2 small biz, and use the accounting firm that does the business returns to do my personal.
Zero interest in trying to do my own K2s!

It's expensive as sin, probably be around a grand this year... cost of doing business.

Wait until you start dealing with K9s! Those forms can really bite sometimes.

My brother is also a CPA and I do his taxes. He is on the audit side and has no experience with tax.
Same

The hardest part is when a family member (mostly my in-laws) asks an individual tax question and I have no answer.

I respond with:

If you purchase a business and need help in calculating the allocation of purchase price to component 1 vs. component 2 tax goodwill for purposes of calculating opening balance sheet deferred tax assets / liabilities under ASC 740…. let me know

Exactly. CPA's come in many forms - tax, audit, CFO's, internal auditors, etc.

I was lucky enough to get a vast experience from governmental auditing while at the State of Iowa Auditor's Office, then audit/tax/consulting experience while at a CPA firm, then some internal audit experience while at a publicly traded company before doing my own thing.

My returns are too complex for me to do. My business is a corp, so those returns are due March 15th... then the personal is April 15th, I have a CPA do it.

I drop mine off at the lumberyard and they handle them for me. Makes that expense tax deductible that way. Although the ladies get upset when I request a receipt for every lap dance.
