What pressure is on Chizik?

It seems apparent that Chizik wants to make an immediate impact in the Big 12 North and the non conference schedule, but is that possible? Chizik was on the coaching fast track when he took the ISU job, so he has to see opportunity to win, sooner than later. He will be the one putting pressure on himself, as ISU fans don't have super high expectations. Here are what I rate as the biggest factors that will impact his success:
1. Will Meyer return to his Soph. form?
2. Can the new offensive linemen block
3. Can the defensive line create any kind of pass rush
4. Can last years disasterous play by the secondary improve
5. Are the new running backs for real?
Lots of questions...only thing that looks pretty solid is our linebackers and Blythe it seems to me. I'm interested in others takes on this...

I am looking for competitiveness (I think that is a word). Too many times in the McCarney era did we just not compete. We would fold anytime we played a team that was heavily favored. I want to see a team with an attitude that they can beat anyone. I want to win the games we are favored in and pull one, maybe two upsets.

All I'm expecting is some assurance that the ship has been righted. Anything beyond that is gravy.

IMO, I think Pollard has put a lot of pressure on him, indirectly but pressure none the less.

Pollard is taking a lot of gambles with a lot of ISU money to hire Chizik, upgrade the facilities, tickets, etc. (which I am behind 100%). Chizik needs to make sure that Pollard is successful and Pollard needs to make sure Chizik is successful. They will only succeed if the other suceeds...

That's the beauty of it all!

I don't see a ton of pressure on him for at least this year. I am just looking forward to having a gameday coach that will put opponents away when given the chance.

I think there's maybe a little more pressure than usual for a "standard" football program, partially because of the season ticket situation.

Naturally, there are going to be people with unrealistic expectations for this year, but I think the majority of the fanbase realizes that instant gratification isn't going to happen. Even Barry Alvarez took four seasons before he won more than 5 games, so I (and probably a lot of people), just want to see improvement, and solidly winning 4 games is an improvement. Anything beyond that is just a bonus in my eyes. I DO honestly think we can win six games this year, and if we beat Iowa or have ONE win against the Big 4 in our conference schedule (@ Nebraska, @ Tech, UT and OU), there will be a lot of optimism going into the 07-08 season, especially with the difficulty of the conference schedule dropping down.

This year's football should be competitive we should have a soild offense our defense should be great at linebacker especially and our secondary can't get much worse. I expect at least 5 wins but we should be able to get more. Last season was a result of a tougher schedule bad blocking that grounded our offense and a young secondary that didn't allow us to blitz much to create pressure on the QB.

I really wonder if the new guys that played in the secondary CAN develope, or don't have the ability to play the position. We were so outclassed late in the season it was pathetic. I was at the CU game, and we made a medocre QB look like Payton Manning. There are a few new guys, but last years guys HAVE to step up for us to have a chance to win. And our non existant pass rush has to change dramatically as well.
If anyone can pull this off, Chizik can. I'm hopeing for 6-6. An Iowa win could cook Ferentz goose if they are disappointing again this year.

Chizik has been at programs where pressure was the name of the game. We at ISU just learned how to spell it when Pollard showed up. And I'm glad.

The most pressure Chizik will receive will be from Chizik himself. Here's a man who hates to loss. Right away we'll see an attitude of a winner. Losing to underdogs, will be nothing but a bad memory. And we'll begin getting excited about upsetting someone. We could actually be 4-0 heading to Lincoln. The first upset?

Biggest expectation is to improve week to week while being competitive.

Next would be team unity, the mentality they would go to battle for each other, regardless of position. Did not have that for the last 2 - 3 years.

Let's start with winning any game that doesn't come down to the last play.

that was one of the few positives you could actually take out of last year tho...short memory? Remember how many fans were SOOO pissed off how we would lose games that came down to overtime or that were decided in the last minute of the 4th qtr.? I heard tons of people complain...I know last year was not impressive, but at least we won 4 games all at the end...including winning our FIRST OVERTIME GAME EVER (i think we were like 0-5 before that or something), even if it was Triple OT with Toledo. Our defense held at the end against UNLV (sorry Rebel fans, but he was nowhere near inbounds) as well as the Mizzou game, say what you want about the holding call, but when all is said and done we won another football at the end. The UNI was mostly just because it was a ridiculously long FG...but people kinda got what they asked for, we won close games that came down to the wire even if they weren't the hardest teams on our schedule.

Me personally what I wanna see...take care of the teams you should...that was one bad thing about Mac (this is coming from a HUGE Mac-backer.) A Lot of times he would have his teams play up to or down to whoever they were playing, It's good to play up to a more talented team, but because Mac was a "rah-rah" motivator type of coach I think he struggled in getting his teams ready for lesser opponents...Kent State is what I wanna see...We should beat Kent State by at LEAST 3 scores. If that game goes down to the wire either way...we are in for a long season. I just don't see us competing later on if we can't take care of that early business in the season.

sorry Rebel fans, but he was nowhere near inbounds
nor did he catch the football. you reminded me though...i need a good laugh before bed...im going to youtube to watch that idiot coach..."I NEED TO SPEAK WITH YOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!"

Shouldn't be a lot of pressure on Coach Chizik this year. He did a stellar job of getting 25+ solid recruits in 2 months. He said he got 11 Juco players to fill immediate holes, but he believes in recruiting kids out of HS and developing them over bringing in Jucos.

There may not be 7 wins on this schedule. I'd be very happy with 6 and bowl eligibility. Coach Chizik will change the culture of Iowa State Football but it will take time. Most importantly, I hope we can put teams away and win convincingly. The wins last year were nail-biters...

1.) The opposing team dropping a pass in a failed two-point conversion attempt in OT (Toledo).
2.) The opposing kicker missing a field goal attempt with time running out (UNI).
3.) An incomplete pass in the back of the end zone on the last play (UNLV).
4.) Beat Mizzou in a close game.

We have great skill position players on offense coming back and hopefully the new RB's pan-out. The offensive line should be much more disiciplined and it sounds like the S&C coaches are making these guys work hard.

I am really looking forward to seeing the new defense. The secondary should improve, LB's should be a strength, and we have some good Juco defensive lineman coming.

Didn't the "Next big step" outline football expectations to show that in the next five years they said they wanted five big12 championships in all sports (already have one in wrestling). They also wanted to win the big12 north within either 3 or 5 years and play in the big12 championship game. At any rate I know he is given at least two years of lee-way to show improvement over last season and the third year he will be expected to be moderately successful. You could very well be a 7-4 team and win the big12 north. So far the next big step is looking pretty good.

This year I'm taking the approach that I'm just waiting til I see action happen on the field. Every year I disect what I think will happen and can't even begin to predict how the season will go. I'm pumped for the spring game!
