There's a thread on another board I frequent dedicated to weird, or maybe more accurately "unexpected" geography facts, and I find it fascinating as hell. Figured folks here might have some interesting contributions. Some examples of what I'm talking about:

-Youngstown, Ohio is east of Neptune Beach, Florida which is on the Atlantic.

-Keokuk is closer to Paducah, Kentucky than it is to Larchwood.

-Hamburg, IA is closer to Tulsa than it is to Decorah.

-Detroit is closer to Boone, NC than it is to Ironwood, MI.

-Dalhart, TX is closer to Cheyenne, WY than it is to Austin.

-Rome is north of Des Moines.

If you like geography and want a good mindfuck, look up the India-Bangladesh border. There are parts of India, that are inside parts of Bangladesh thats inside of a part of India. So if you were in that place and wanted to go to Bangladesh proper you would: start in India, then go to Bangladesh, then go to India a again and then finally get to Bangladesh.

- Most of Europe is North of Maine
- Maine is significantly closer to Africa than Florida is
- Rutgers is closer to Greenland and Venezuela than it is to USC
- The most direct path from Des Moines to Honolulu takes you over Omaha, North of Denver and over San Francisco

On this tip, there's a lake on Isle Royale (in Lake Superior) which has an island in it, which has a small pond on it.
