Well, my 20 year old Kenmore washing machine finally gave out. I went to Sears and bought a new Kenmore but returned it twice after I discovered the four temperature settings were really just two (cold and hot). Nothing in between. No warm....just cold and hot.

I have since looked at Whirlpool and Maytag but both have horrible on-line purchaser reviews. Do any of you have any good recommendations? I'd like to spend less than $600 if possible. Thanks.

I'd say wait for the next sears family and friends night (big discounts), but it sounds like you need a new one right now. I'm afraid I won't be of much help with reviews. But if you are looking to keep the price down, last time I bought an appliance at Sears, I got the salesman to give me the model I wanted at the price of the lower model, so some negotiating might help...offer to the buy the extended warranty in exchange for a discount, and then return the extended warranty.
 
I've been happy with the GE that I bought at lowes. They are far from fancy but they wash clothes.
 
Check out Sears. Odds are you could get a new Kenmore washer and dryer both for under $1000 - and they'll probably last you quite a long time.
 
Are you sure that there wasn't something wrong with the machine? I have never seen a clothes washer that didn't at least have cold, hot and warm settings.

I would recommend a front load washer. They are more money, but they do a much better jobn of cleaning with less detergent, and they also get your clothes much dryer than top load washers. I have a front load Kenmore that must be 7 or 8 years old and I have been very pleased so far.

About a year ago we bought a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer from Lowes - both work very good. The washing machine was on a clearance sale for around $700 and the dryer was a unit that had been purchased and used for 1 week and returned - they gave it to us for $300 with full factory warranty still attached. I would highly recommend the Duet series if you can find a good sale.

Yeah, that's what I thought....just something wrong with the machine. So, I had them take it back and bring me a second one and it did the same thing. The delivery guys that hooked it up and tested it said it must be a "design flaw" because it was supposed to have four settings 1)tap cold 2) cold 3) warm 4) hot. But the first three were all ice cold. There was no warm, just ice cold and hot.
 
how did you know it wasn't warm? I don't think I've ever checked what temp of water was coming out - there's a to-do for me tonight.

Because me and the delivery guys tested it and felt the water in the tub....and believe us...the "warm" setting was ICE cold. I'm sure most people don't check it and nobody ever really knows.

I just got a new washer/drier a couple weeks ago and I love it. There are tons of settings, buzzers that let you know when the loads are done, I use less soap and water, and the drier only takes 35 minutes for a normal load and 45 for towels (as opposed to 1 hour for a normal load and 1.5 hours for towels, which I had on both my previous driers) and the lint trap has so little lint that if I didn't know the clothes were coming out dry, I'd wonder if it was drying at all.

We actually got these Maytag appliances at Lowes - they were clearancing out "last year's models" over Memorial Day weekend, so the price was pretty good. I think it's worth paying a little extra for all of the benefits.

We just bought this one about a month ago.

Amana - Front Load Washers - Laundry - Appliances at The Home Depot

No complaints so far. It got good reviews from a consumer report web site (I don't remember which one). My only complaint was Home Depot delivered it but wouldn't hook it up to our drain line because it would void the 5 year parts and labor warranty that we bought. Didn't give much advice as to how we could remedy the situation, just that he couldn't hook it up that way. Other than that it is a little smaller and a little slower than some other models, but the price is right.

Unless you're sold on a front-loader, get a Kenmore 90 series with automatic temperature control. Shouldn't be more than $450. Usually rated very high in Consumer Reports.

Wow, thanks! The customer reviews are really good on this one! I might have to consider this one!
 
We got a Samsung front load washer/dryer set for $900 at Lowe's on Black Friday. At the time we thought we had hit the jackpot. Now I wish I would not have bought them, they are awful. The washer gives error messages and stops mid-wash all the time, it is impossible to get the lint out of the lint filter, and our clothes always smell the way clothes typically smell if you leave them in the washer too long before drying.
