I'm planning a trip to Vegas for my Wife and I. I'm trying to pick a reasonably priced hotel in a safe area within walking distance to sights and attractions. Any tips?

we stayed at the Aria a few years ago and thought it was nice and close enough. I think the Cosmo which is in that same area a bit more on the street was under construction at the time or we may have done that one.
If you are flying Allegiant out of Des Moines or Cedar Rapids there, you may want to check out some of their flight/hotel combo packages as there CAN be some really decent deals there. The last time we went, we got a deal through there where we stayed at the MGM Grand, which isn't too bad. It has a really good location, great pools, but is pretty massive and probably not quite as updated as some of the other options out there. It also is pretty heavily tailored to a bit more of the party crowd, especially with its pools. Overall, as long as you are on the strip, you can't go too terribly wrong with any of the nicer ones.
I guess it depends on what your definition of reasonably priced is. My wife had a work thing out there in August, so I went out and we turned it into a long weekend. For work she stayed at Planet Hollywood, it was dated, but alright. We moved over to the Aria when she was finished, certainly a step up, from Planet Hollywood, but the price is as well. Both are located in an area that makes it easy to get around in. I will say if this is your first time to Vegas, it is much more spread out than it seems when looking at a map or overhead shots. The properties are huge. That said you certainly can walk to a lot of things from any of the major hotels.
A guy at work always stays at Treasure Island when he goes. It is a bit smaller than some of the big resorts. I don't think you can go wrong at any of the locations on the strip. Just need to look around for the best deals.

Just remember you get what you pay for. For work I've done Harrahs and Luxor, both older casinos and lower priced than most on the strip. A bit outdated but not bad. I've also done platinum suites which is condo style, no casino but we had a small group and spent most of the time at the hard rock for a weekend of concerts. If I'm vacationing I'd want to do Cosmo because it's newer and I've heard good things.

NOT the Westgate Resort and Casino. Unless you like being harassed five times by time share people on every trip to and from your room. Plus, the AC is sporadic (and the lights went out for an hour, the casino completely went dead and the fire alarms rang the whole time).
My friends and I booked our flight/hotel package to the Stratosphere hotel and it was crazy reasonable price-wise. Now, as far as the location and niceness, they are both fine but nothing special. Stratosphere is at the northern-most side of the new Las Vegas strip, but still easily within walking distance, just a bit longer walk than the MGM or Ceasar's Palace obviously. They have a full casino and sports-book, a rooftop pool that overlooks some of the strip, and the stratosphere tower that has a few attractions for you to do and has an awesome view of Vegas. They have updated half of the hotel rooms (at least that is where they were at when I was there a year and a half ago, could be further along now) and not sure if the price for those varies, which I'm sure it does. But, it isn't the nicest hotel in Vegas but totally worth it, in my mind, for the price I paid.

Just find the cheapest place on the strip. The difference in amenities isn't that great to spend an extra $50-$100 for a room you'll barely see.

We stayed at the NYNY the last time in Vegas. It seemed to be a good mix of being cheaper than most other places but also not a dump. Some decent places to eat/drink there too. Not the best location but was pretty easy to walk to the hotels on the other end of the strip.
As long as you don't plan on going walking away from the strip or Fremont I don't think there is too much to worry about from a safety standpoint.

The monorail really was outstanding last time there. Cut down dramatically on time and money spent to get up and down the strip.
Stayed at the SLS that just happened to be connected to the monorail. After that I'll be looking to use that more often. Much much better than cab.
The Stratosphere is a dump. Straight up dump. We had our head on a swivel there and the room wasn't fit for humans

Oh yeah, probably my other biggest word of advice is that when you go to Vegas, Uber needs to be your best friend. In fact, it might be one of the best things to ever happen to Vegas. Any $30 cab ride is pretty much an $8 Uber ride. The drivers and cars we had were amazing as well, not to mention they are everywhere and super convenient. Most of my vehicles ended up being free upgraded vehicles. In fact, unlike other trips, we said pretty much screw walking much anymore and took an Uber everywhere. Almost every drive was like $7 total to your credit card. Clean and easy. Truthfully, not even sure how those drivers make money off of how low the rates are.
We stayed a Mandala Bay last time we were there in June. Probably the best hotel Ive stayed in Vegas, but being so far away from the main part of the strip really sucked.
THIS. It is worth paying the difference to stay on the strip, however. I like staying in the center of the strip. It's a long walk (or otherwise) from T.I. to Mandalay Bay.

New York, New York. Great location, inexpensive. Rooms seemed nice. Plus the roller coaster is pretty sweet, if you're into that sort of thing.
IMO, the best place to stay when considering value/location is in the New York, New York/Monte Carlo/Planet Hollywood/MGM area. Lots of shows you can see, and you're close to the Bellagio/Mirage/Mandalay Bay areas, as they have a lot of neat things to see as well. Plus, these 4 hotels are the best priced of them all, IMO.
