Updates on the 16-17 hoops schedule

That is correct. UNI has been notified that it is 7:00 on CyTV or FSN. Giving ISU the courtesy of announcing.

Hoping somebody in Ames can confirm. Seems like it would have been a good fact to "leak" during the tailgate tour, but they haven't yet.

I don't mind a somewhat lackluster non-con because when you play in the Big 12 w/ 18 conference games, you'll have PLENTY of resume building chances.

This is true. As it sits now, we have Cinncy, Iowa, and at least 2 big names from the tournament. We had a lower non con SOS last season, and still ended up with one of the countries toughest schedules. There is a good chance the Big 12 is down from last year, but I'll still bet there is 4 Big 12 teams in the top 25. That means 6-10 games vs ranked opponents, just in conference play.

If Iowa St was competing for a 1 or 2 seed, then I would be worried our non con isn't strong enough. However, when compared to 3-6 seeds, Iowa St's is as good, or better.

My question is how much harder is it to get half way decent (100-200 RPI) teams to come to Hilton as opposed to terrible (250+ RPI) teams? Or is it simply a scheduling issue?

I know you don't know for sure before hand, but we had 3 teams with RPI's over 300 last year. That's got to be somewhat predictable. Chicago St, Ark -PB, or Coppin St all had RPI's above 250 every year for the last 3 years.

Selfishly, I'd try to get the home and home with Creighton right away, especially if we get the home game this year. Creighton is gunna be good this year, decent next year. Nothing to lose in a series like this.

I'd agree except they have McD as their coach. Something about losing to a guy you were a year from firing who left the cupboard empty (besides Ejim coming in) just wouldn't sit right with me. We want to (and we have actually) feel like we've moved on to bigger and better things no offense to McD.

Lol, brainfart on my account. I actually like Creighton, so I have put the whole McDermott thing behind me, and sometimes forget the connection. His time at Iowa St was undoubtedly terrible, but everything turned out pretty well, at some point you gotta bury the hatchet.

I have always liked McD and stood up for him the whole time he was at ISU. I wish him success, just don't want to lose to him ha!

Thanks. Glad to get some dates on the calendar.

Not wild about the Iowa game on a Thursday night. Seems like it would be a great weekend game. Put a low major on the weeknight. Oh well, I may make this my first venture to CHA.

P.S. Any news on the time of the UNI football game? Someone on PN has said he has inside info that it will be 7pm, but they are waiting for ISU to announce it.

The best we are going to get going forward (given when the game has been traditionally scheduled over the last decade) is a Friday night.

See Bold above...
We are playing a mid major on the weeknight....The hoks.

Are people really saying they would rather ISU play Valpo or SFA before UNI? That's just nonsense. The UNI game is always a 'must see' event in the state. The games over the last 10-15 years have mostly all been good close games. Why in the world would ISU fans not want to see that game every year? Makes no sense other than $$$, which like I say is dumb. Either ISU cares more about money than the fans or they are scared of UNI. Those games up at CF in the middle of the week were always fun as hell to watch.

I would much rather play Valpo or SFA over UNI especially if I have to travel to Cedar Falls for any game. I don't think any Iowa State fan really gets fired up about beating UNI. In the end what I care about is success and getting to the NCAA Tournament. The reality is that Valpo or SFA do the same things for our RPI and strength of schedule as playing UNI would. All three are high quality mid-major programs. The difference is that the UNI players play that game with a chip on their shoulder much more than an Iona, Valpo, SFA or St. Mary's would. I don't think it is about the money nor is it about being scared of playing UNI, I just think you can get a similar opponent with less risk. Really the only argument for playing UNI is (a) we should be nice to them because they are a fellow in-state school and (b) they have played some close games in the past. Neither of those arguments move the needle for me personally.

ISU is 2-6 vs. UNI ever since Jacobson took over for McD, and both of the wins came in overtime. ISU fans should abso-freakin'-lutely be fired up about beating UNI, and more importantly so should the players and coaches.

You're joking, right?

Joking about what exactly? ISU is 2-6 vs. UNI in the last eight meetings. That's an established fact.

The other part of it is certainly a matter of opinion, I'll admit. If some ISU fans never want to play UNI again in Ames, CF, or Des Moines they are certainly entitled to that opinion as well. My own point is that in recent times wins against an in-state rival, even a "mid-major" have been few and far between for ISU, so a win against them could be (and again, IMO should be) something to be excited about, certainly much more so than a 30-point victory against a overmatched HBCU team, for example.

I don't think I would ever get fired up about beating UNI. Credit to Jacobson for having his guys ready to play us.

Fair enough, and as I've written earlier in the thread every fan is entitled to his or her own opinion on how importantly they view games, especially in the non-conference.

It think is somewhat predicable because some low major conferences are typically much, much better than other low major conferences. I think they did really to get the home games from Buffalo, NDSU, and Chattanooga last year. You probably don't want to fill up a non-con schedule with those teams, because it's nice to have a couple of SWAC or MEAC cupcakes in there, but getting a few of those 100-200 teams really helps the RPI.

I'd be for playing UNI every year if it was WF-Hilton every other year, don't really get excited about it and no matter how good we are/how bad they are it's always a scary game, which is not good ends up being a no-win situation.

Also, surprised they are trying for another home-home with the home game this year, with Cinci at home I'd rather have the road game with the return trip next year.
